Released as a single on 7 September 1968, it was their second number-one single on the UK Singles Chart and their first US Top 10 hit.The song is about a man who, awaiting his execution in the electric chair, begs the prison chaplain to pass a final message on to his wife. Robin Gibb, who wrote the lyrics, said that the man's crime was the murder of his wife's lover, though the lyrics do not explicitly allude to the identity of the victim. Robin said, This is about a prisoner on Death Row who only has a few hours to live. He wants the prison chaplain to pass on a final message to his wife. There's a certain urgency about it. Myself and Barry wrote it. It's a bit like writing a script. Sometimes you can sit there for three hours with your guitar and nothing will happen. Then in the last ten minutes something will spark. The song was written with Percy Sledge in mind to record it. Sledge did record it in February 1970 but Atlantic did not issue his version in the United States at the time.Barry recalled, In those days, the lyrics were almost pretty well done on the spot. I don't remember the fundamentals on how the lyrics were formed, except that we were writing about a guy on death row. That was it.Robin adds:It was like acting, you see, we said, let's pretend that somebody, his life is on the line, somebody's going to the chair. What would be going through their mind? Let's not make it doom and gloom but sort of an appeal to the person he loves. Because right now that's all he cares about. Regardless of whether he's done a bad thing, he is a human being, and he's sending out this last message. There's someone out there whom he loves. It's a torch song, but within a very sort of theatrical sense. Not sort of abstract, but definitely somebody in a very bad situation whose life is going to end. What would they be saying, you know? This is it: 'Gotta get a message to you, hold on.Revive this hit on your brass instruments and enjoy!

Půjdem Spolu do Betléma roughly translates to Let's Go Together to Bethlehem and it is a popular Czech Christmas carol. This setting is for mixed brass quartet (two trumpets, one trombone, one tuba). This tune- and this subsequent arrangement- has some musical references to an instrument sometimes called the Czech bagpipe or Dudy. Thus, there are subtle musical references to this austere instrument with brief bagpipe-like drones and a humorous portion in the middle where the player gets stuck. Ossia notes are included to help with the more challenging portions of the arrangement (particularly the involved tuba part). My apologies for the error-prone recording as my chops were not in good condition for the multi-track effort.

The composer arranged the work for full orchestra from the original violin and piano score. This brass quintet version allows for comfortable ranges for all instruments with some optional octave placement for greater excitement. This book has posed some issues as it is such complex music it is almost impossible to cut it down to 5 parts while maintaining its integrity. As a result, some songs will be in 6 or more parts. Parlo miser o taccio is a trio for two sopranos and bass. I have set this for trumpets/cornets and euphonium/trombone, leaving the accompaniment in the hands of the horns and tubas, but with an extra high Bb part. The title translates as Should I, poor wretch, speak out or hold my tongue? Yet again our young man is in a romantic (lustful) state, and the words of the lyrics carry many double entendres in rspect of what he and his lady are getting up to! The strong dissonances followed by long drawn out resolutions and suspensions were a common device in this type of song to indicate how matters were progressing. At 6 and a half minutes, this is quite a long song, compared to the 2 or 3 minutes of most of the book. The seventh book is quite a change from the earlier ones. Monteverdi seems to be concentrating on developing solos and duets, trios and small accompanied ensembles. The accompaniments are often written out with more than just long note chords. The intricate instrumental parts are more than just filling in the harmony (hence the difficulty in paring them down.) Once again, these songs are exquisitely crafted and travel well onto brass.

Stuttgart, Germany, 1872) moved to St. Petersburg, Russia, to work as a tutor at the age of seventeen. But his love for the music of Haydn and Mozart impelled him to a career in music. He moved back to Germany in 1811, settled in Stuttgart, and remained there for most of his life. The prestigious Cotta music firm published some of his early compositions and sent him to study music in Italy, where he came under the influence of Palestrina's music. In 1821 Kocher founded the School for Sacred Song in Stuttgart, which popularized four-part singing in the churches of that region. He was organist and choir director at the Striftsckirche in Stuttgart from 1827 to 1865. Kocher wrote a treatise on church music, Die Tonkunst in der Kirche (1823), collected a large number of chorales in Zions Harfe (1855), and composed an oratorio, two operas, and some sonatas. The second verse has the addition of fanfare-like motifs in the top two parts which add some sparkle to the tune. The intention is merely to heighten the feeling of 'announcement' which we get from the words. The melody is also much more decorated and placed into the middle of the ensemble.From Letter C there is an interlude of fanfares before the final verse at the grandioso. This is the loudest part of the setting and needs to sound warm, full and rich.This setting is intended to be played by any ensemble. I have kept the range used reasonable and it does not require any special techniques.
