FIRST IMPRESSIONS is an original composition for big band and featured as a set piece for the 2005 Australian Academy Festival of Music C Grade Jazz Ensemble division. Written in a laid-back swing style, it is a minor blues scored for full big band but will work equally well with a smaller combination of instruments as indicated on the front page of the score. The arrangement features plenty of unison writing to help younger players establish confidence within their sections as well as more independence between sections. An open section provides a chance for everyone in the band to have a go at taking a solo. Backing figures are provided on parts and can be played at the director's discretion. Solo sheets are also included for Bb, Eb and Treble and Bass clef instruments with two fully notated choruses. These solos are suggestions only and students should be encouraged to improvise their own solos. A Guitar Chord Shapes guide is also provided. www.bemus.com

Published by R.J.Becker (A0.1209531). This lovely ballad was beautifully arranged by R.J. Becker for a (13 piece) Small Big Band (Alto Sax / Tenor Sax / Baritone Sax / 1.-3. Trumpet / 1. & 2. Trombone / Bass Trombone / Piano / Guitar / Bass & Drums. Even if the individual parts give the impression of a simple arrangement at first glance, one should not underestimate the sometimes challenging tuning due to the more complex chord progressions and their clusters. In addition, each individual player has to master her/his sheet quite soft (mp) throughout the entire piece - with the exception of a short passage. If these elementary details are observed, this nice tune is a treat for the audience as well for each player.

Denny Glasscock #6058077. Published by Denny Glasscock (A0.922044). The original public domain hymn has been modified to a Big Band style jazz piece. It's been designed to be played by large or small instrumental ensembles. It uses swing eighth note rhythms and incorporates most of the usual instruments of a concert band or orchestra, or jazz ensemble. Lyrics are not included, however it retains all six verses as it goes through key changes and a D.S. al Coda. Thus the lyrics from a hymn book could be used to sing all six verses. The first verse is a slow chorale style passage. Then it goes to fast tempo jazz style, much like a New Orleans style derge, or funeral march. The piece is 2:45 minutes in length, but could be shortened, by about 50 seconds, by playing straight through without taking the D.S. al Coda. It would also make an impressive half time show piece for marching band. A performance/play along track is available separately - see item number S0.873189.
