First adjust tempo...175 minimum. This is a montuno which is often mistaken as a samba or merengue. The bass line must be as written. The harmonic structure for the solos is indicated and is limited so the soloists must think in lines, not just a lot of notes. You must use claves full time---no claves--no Latin Music. Intonation and a relaxed feel are needed to make this swing. If there are no solos, skip letter E/EE and go to F for the 2 bar chase solos, into the cascade, rhythm section solo, quiet interlude to sign. etc.If you want a Maynard or Buddy chart, look elsewhere. This series of charts uses nothing more complicated than eighth notes, are not frantic or screamers, extreme ranges and are hemi-demi-semi-quaver free. They depend on intonation and the players being not intimidated by what he is asked to play. There is no contest to see how high you can go before you need oxygen , how many notes you can play in 9 seconds or before your bell overheats , or how long it takes the audience to cover their earsRelaxed and confident players always play more in tune. Good harmonies, lines and realistic rhythm patterns will produce a good result that will swing and be enjoyed by player and listener alike.

(A take-off on events that could have happened with the Benny Goodman Orchestra’s book of arrangements if things in jazz history had taken another turn). What if Benny Carter had not sailed for Europe in 1935 to become staff arranger with the BBC, but instead had helped out Benny Goodman with providing scores for his ‘Let’s Dance’ program? And suppose Carter had done the same trick that Fletcher Henderson pulled later on, e.g. adapting already existing scores of his own band for the Benny Goodman Orchestra? Carter’s ‘Symphony In Riffs’ is presented here as a piece that could have been a cornerstone of the Goodman band library. The sax soli written by Carter is there, but the clarinet dominates the second strain in a Glenn Miller-styled section, and of course later with an extended solo. Other soloists include trb 1, piano, tpt 2 and ts 1. The two different strains are juxtaposed to each other, to make for a maximum of variety. Scored for the line-up of the Benny Goodman Orchestra of 1935: solo clt/2 as/2 ts/3 tpt/2 trb/rhy. Tpt 1 to Eb3. Difficult for multiple reasons: • The clarinet soloist must be a first-class ‘BG-wannabe’. Fluent soloist, comfortable in the upper register. • Strong lead-alto required, with an old-skool ‘singing’ tone. • Lead trumpet must be able to ‘carry off’ the final section from bar 197 onwards. • Driving rhythm section needed; swinging (preferably acoustic) rhythm guitarist and a bassist who doesn’t shy away from playing compelling bass-lines. If your band meets these requirements: have fun!

Uncle Charles was written for Soundscape Big Band Jazz (São Paulo, Brazil) and is a medium up swing chart based on modified rhythm changes. The chart features an intro that has the bass instruments dueling it out early on. As the composer is a bass trombonist himself, he tends to give interesting and demanding lines to this instrument and Uncle Charles is no exception. On the high end, the trumpets can opt for an 8va Ab phrase if they are feeling brave that day (Listen to Jr. Galante on Soundscape´s recording to hear it well done)! The three soloists (trumpet and two tenors) constantly trade off solos between themselves and the bridge is always accompanied with an improvised second tenor solo (Uncle Charles in the case of SoundScape Big Band Jazz). All this along with wah wahs, plungers and Mingus like effects makes this chart fun and challenging.

If, like me, you’re always looking for a new sound for your festive season concert, want to move away from the usual catalog of songs we hear every year, then Gee Whiz, It’s Christmas could be a good choice. The simplicity of this song sung by Carla Thomas in the early 1960s has been reproduced here in this easy big band arrangement in the original key.The lines played by strings in the original song work well here on the saxes. Trumpets and trombones reinforce the rhythmic patterns. A new melodic phrase derived from the song itself and played by the saxes replaces the introductory two-measure vamp of the original. This complementary melodic line is heard again during the piece and is repeated an octave higher by the trumpets in a brief interlude between the bridge and the third verse. The fade-out ending of the original has been replaced here by an open section with solos cued in alto sax, tenor sax, trumpet (or flugel horn), trombone, guitar and piano. Alternatively, your vocalist can improvise over these four measures or maybe alternate with a soloist. However, this four-measure section is optional; you could just skip to the last two measures.

For the trumpet solo which is transcribed per the CD, each section in the big band play significant roles in providing lots of interest to play off of as a soloist. After restating the melody in the trumpets and saxes with some variation, the composition wraps it up with a unison line at the end to finish strong!
