Londonderry Air arranged for String Orchestra.<br> <br> A big band version of the song is used as the theme for The Danny Thomas Show (a.k.a. Make Room For Daddy).<br> <br> "Danny Boy" was used to represent Northern Ireland at the start of the London 2012 Olympics opening ceremony, sung by a choir of children on the Giant’s Causeway.<br> <br> On November 25, 2014, the Vancouver Canucks used the song in honor of the recently deceased Pat Quinn, who played and worked in many executive capacities for the team.<br> <br> There are various theories as to the true meaning of "Danny Boy". Some listeners have interpreted the song to be a message from a parent to a son going off to war or leaving as part of the Irish diaspora.<br> <br> The 1918 version of the sheet music included alternative lyrics ("Eily Dear"), with the instructions that "when sung by a man, the words in italic should be used; the song then becomes "Eily Dear", so that "Danny Boy" is only to be sung by a lady". In spite of this, it is unclear whether this was Weatherly’s intent.<br> <br> Why the name Londonderry Air? Londonderry and Derry refer to the same place, a city in the north of Ireland, and also to the surrounding county. Supposedly the city of Derry was founded by St. Colmcille, although archaeological evidence shows that people were living there thousands of years earlier. There is an excellent museum in the city, which is worth a visit if you want to find out more. The name of the city was actually "Doire", corrupted to "Derry" by people who can’t pronounce Irish. It thought to derive from an Irish root meaning "oak tree".<br> <br> Moving quickly along in history, about a millenium later the government of England was having a difficult time colonizing Ireland because of the fierce and warlike clans living there, especially in the north of the country, Ulster. The monarchs of England, almost all of whom were notorious cheapskates, were continually looking about for ingenious ways to conquer places without actually having to put up the money themselves, or run the risk of unpopularity if they lost. In the case of Ireland, some of these schemes of the "Brish gummit" (as it is termed nowadays in Ulster) are still producing unfortunate long-term consequences.<br> <br> In 1608, King James I gave the city of Derry to the City of London corporation. I guess the deal could be summed up by saying that if the City of London could figure out a way to chase all the inhabitants out of Derry, they would be allowed to keep the loot, minus a percentage for the King of course. If they lost, well too bad. In celebration of this historic agreement, the name of Derry was officially changed to Londonderry. (For further information, check out the Northern Ireland Tourist Board’s History of Derry.)<br> <br> The linguistic outcome of all this today is that, if you think that King James’s deal with the City of London was a good idea, you call both the city and county "Londonderry". If you do, you are probably a supporter of the Unionist movement that seeks to keep Ulster a part of the United Kingdom. If you think it was a bad idea, you call both "Derry", and you are probably a supporter of the Irish Nationalist cause. Or you might just be someone who thinks it’s confusing for kings to be going around changing the names of places all the time for no good reason.<br> <br> You can find plenty of discussion about the political side of the question elsewhere, but here let’s look at the musical side. We have an air, collected in county Derry/Londonderry, and it doesn’t have a title. What do we call it?<br> <br> If you were a proper Victorian, there’s no way you were going to call it the Londonderry Air, much less the Derry Air, because of the improper sentiments that these titles might suggest. My parents tell me that in their youth in Australia, it was usually called the Air from County Derry. (This would, I suppose, support Winston Churchill’s theory that Australia was inhabited by "convicts and Irishmen".)<br> <br> My mother also sends the following information, referring to an arrangement of the tune by the Australian composer Percy Grainger:<br> <br> Just another note about Danny Boy, that I grew up in Australia believing to be the Air from County Derry. We were looking through some LP’s last night (back to vinyl yet!) and found a Mercury Wing Classical Favorites stereo LP SRW18060, COUNTRY GARDENS and other favorites by Percy Grainger {played by} Eastman-Rochester Pops, Frederick Fennell, conducting. The cover notes included the following: "Irish Tune from County Derry was harmonised in memory of Irish childhood friends in Australia." Considered by many to be Grainger’s masterpiece of harmonization, the tune was collected many years ago by Miss Jane Ross of New Town, Limavady, Ireland. Grainger has set it for many instrumental combinations. So there’s another variant on the name for it. It doesn’t say who wrote the notes, but the bits in quotes for each of the works on the record are Grainger’s original comments.<br> <br> The references to Londonderry Air that I’ve seen don’t go back any earlier than the late 1930s. For example, the Glenn Miller Orchestra recorded Danny Boy (Londonderry Air) in February 1940. Bing Crosby’s version was recorded in July 1941 (reference). (So many different things I could check up on!) Londonderry was an important American naval base during WWII, but the US hadn’t come into the war in 1940.<br> <br> Need an anthem fast? String Orchestra - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1233596 Composed by Adrian Molina and Germaine Franco. Arranged by Michael Linert. Film/TV,Mariachi,Multicultural,World. Score and Parts. 81 pages. Michael Linert #829179. Published by Michael Linert (A0.1233596). Play and Sing Un Poco Loco from Disney's Coco!  This Multi-Level Masterpiece arrangement is scored for mariachi and string orchestral ensembles in a festival arrangement with a variety of levels from first-year players and beyond! Watch and Listen on YouTube! --> https://youtu.be/V1wBfV9cxFYEach purchase of this score/parts allows for 40 musicians to use this sheet music for one calendar year from purchase date. Here is some information to help make this arrangement work best! 1.    All parts in this arrangement can be played simultaneously in a festival-style performance. 2.    The most basic way to play this piece and have it sound like the piece would be to have the violin or viola part (normal or advanced) and a bass instrument (guitarrón, bass, or cello) playing while one or more singers play. 3.    Instruments could play the vocal parts, if necessary. 4.    Adding the foundational, normal, or advanced armonia (guitar, vihuela, or other chordal instruments) would enhance quite a bit. 5.    Adding the normal or advanced trumpet parts would add another layer. Their part doubles the violin/viola parts in most places, but there’s a part near the middle where their part varies to add complexity to the counterpoint. 6.    The foundational violin, viola, cello, bass, guitar, and trumpet parts (normal sheet music) are in unison. They are a mixture of melody/harmonic writing and the bass parts. These parts should be played alongside 2 and 3 listed above. (4 and 5 too if you can!) 7.    The Foundational Notes sheets are one note per measure. In this piece, they are the main tonic chord tones. In this piece (but not in all Multi-Level Masterpieces), they also happen to be the basic major chords. These parts should be played alongside 2 and 3 listed above. (4, 5, and 6 too, if you can!)8.    If you have questions or happen to notice mistakes along the way, please do let me know (ML@michaellinert.com). My current terms of use at the time of publishing allow for use of this sheet music for one year from purchase date. This is so that I can continue to enhance these Multi-Level Masterpieces based on feedback from people performing them! I will likely also add additional instrumental parts (mainly band/general music) in the future. Thank you, and I hope you will enjoy!

String Orchestra - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.895610 Composed by Ignatius Sancho. Arranged by Kyle VanArsdalen. Classical,Instructional,Standards. Score and parts. 23 pages. Kyle VanArsdalen Music #6515983. Published by Kyle VanArsdalen Music (A0.895610). These 2 Minuets and Air come from a collection of music called Minuets, etc., etc. for the Violin, Mandolin, German-Flute and Harpsichord (1770) by the British abolitionist, writer, shopkeeper, and composer Ignatius Sancho (1729-1780). They are arranged so that they can be performed as a work for String Orchestra or String Quartet. This is possible because the Cello and Bass parts are doubled. The Violin 3 part is optional and can serve two purposes: (1) To add more instruments to the viola section, if your orchestra has a small number of violists, to balance the parts in the ensemble, and (2) to provide more options for performing these pieces as a String Quartet. Possibilities include:2 Violins, Viola, Cello;   2 Violins, Viola, Bass;   3 Violins, Cello;   3 Violins, BassThis kind of flexibility of ensemble, along with the fact that every part gets to play something interesting, makes this an ideal arrangement for educators.Additionally, the Air was originally written as a trio. The Viola and Violin 3 parts were written by me, so that it can be performed with the 2 Minuets. This means, if you wanted to play the Air as a trio, you can, and it provides another option for how one can utilize this arrangement for chamber music. This means the Air can be performed as a stand-alone movement for:2 Violins, Cello;   2 Violins, BassThis download includes the full score and all of the parts (Violin 1, Violin 2, Violin 3 (treble viola), Viola, Cello, and Bass).

String Orchestra - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.808194 Composed by Mark W. Huxhold. Instructional. Score and parts. 68 pages. Mark Wayne Music, LLC #3489363. Published by Mark Wayne Music, LLC (A0.808194). Developed by a String Specialist for the String Specialist by Mark W. Huxhold (Who's Who Among America's Teachers- 2000, 2005, 2006) I developed this method over a 20 year period as a school orchestra teacher faced with ever diminishing classroom instructional time. My goal was to preserve and articulate the scope and sequence of the curriculum in a concise and efficient manner. This method is intended to foster music reading skills from the beginning when used in conjunction with teacher initiated rote and modeling teaching techniques. Book 2 continues in standard portrait format at 100% scale. Curriculum Scope & Sequence Prerequisite: Book 1 or 1st position (bass 1st & 3rd pos.) on A and D strings. D major, Common time. Eighth, quarter and half notes. Detáche and whole bowing. Technique: Position:violin/viola-1st position (viola half pos.), cello- 1st and extended position, bass- half, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 3 1/2 position. Bowing: Slurs, Richochet Keys: G, C, F/d, Bb/g, Eb/c, A/f#, b, e, a Rhythm Time signatures: 2/4, 3/4, 6/8 Notes/Rests: whole, eight, dotted half, sixteenth, dotted quarter & eight, eighth & quarter triplets Concerning the Double BassMy experience as a classroom teacher and a bassist has convinced me that a beginning bassist develops best in a heterogeneous string class when playing the same contour as the other instruments. This is achieved by introducing the bassist to 3rd position when the other instruments learn C# and D on the A string. I do advocate marking 3rd position on the fingerboard. Another benefit is that the bassist is able to develop good tone production and intonation more easily on the higher 2 strings.
