If I Could I Would Chamber Concerto for StringsIn this experimental work for Strings every letter of the title is been represented by a block of music. The score is being performed by creating sentences based on the first two pages of the proportional score notation. The conductor determines the entrances and fade outs of the instruments as well the repetition of blocks of music. Dynamics are provided for specific movements and different other sentences could be also created. Could I? Would I? If I Would? Etc… Duration: approx. 7-10 minutes Apostolos Paraskevas is a classical guitarist and composer as well as an award-winning film director and producer. He has received multiple international awards for his compositions and was nominated for a Grammy Award. He is the only guitarist ever to have a major orchestral piece performed at Carnegie Hall under the direction of Lukas Foss––and the only musician who has performed there in a Grim Reaper outfit. He was the founder and served for 16 years as the artistic director of the International Guitar Congress-Festival of Corfu, Greece. He is a voting member of the Recording Academy (Grammy's). After his undergraduate music studies in Volos he pursued advanced studies in classical guitar with Costas Cotsiolis (diploma, 1990) and Leo Brouwer (Havana 1984, 1988), as well as postgraduate studies in composition with Lukas Foss and Theodore Antoniou (DMA in composition, Boston University, 1998). Paraskevas embarked on a successful career as a guitar soloist and contemporary composer, achieving distinctions in both disciplines: Grammy nomination for Chase Dance (Bridge Records, 1999); first prize for Night Wanderings (Lukas Foss Composition Competition, 2000); first prize for Phygein Adynaton (National Composers Conference, 1997); and numerous prestigious commissions, performances, and publications. Following teaching posts at Northeastern and Boston Universities, Paraskevas has taught since 2001 at the Berklee College of Music in Boston (professor of composition and classical guitar). Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1473627). The Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, BWV 565, is one of Johann Sebastian Bach's most famous organ compositions. It follows a typical North German structure with three main sections - a free opening (toccata), a fugal section (fugue), and a short free closing section. The exact date of composition is uncertain, but it's believed to have been written before 1708. There is no surviving autograph manuscript. The oldest known source is an undated copy by Johannes Ringk, a student of one of Bach's pupils. It was first published in 1833 through the efforts of composer Felix Mendelssohn during the early Bach Revival period. It gained widespread recognition after being featured in Disney's 1940 film Fantasia, which Leopold Stokowski adapted for orchestra. The piece has become strongly associated with horror films and Gothic imagery in Western culture. The Toccata begins with dramatic flourishes and arpeggios, showcasing the organist's virtuosity. The fugue is characterized by overlapping repetitions of the central theme in different melodic lines. This piece tells the epic story of Hades' abduction of his niece, Persephone. According to the legend, Hades came up through a crack in the ground and snatched the girl while she was playing. In the Underworld, he tried to seduce her in a variety of ways, but to no avail. Finally, Hades is said to have tricked her into staying by offering her a tempting pomegranate. As Persephone ate 6 seeds, she was to stay in the Underworld for six months each year. It is said that while Persphone is in the Underworld, the plants wither and die, and when she comes back to the surface she brings rebirth to growing things. This piece begins with playful pizzicato lines that build upon each other. These represent Persphone at play, but forebodes the dark forces that are encircling her. When the orchestra goes to arco, Persphone is being dragged into the Underworld. A mournful violin solo signifies her arrival, but this mournful theme is quickly replace by the devious seductions of Hades in the form of a humorous waltz. Finally, Hades offers the pomegranate to Persephone and she eats 6 seeds (represented by the six beats of the B major chord in measures 76 and 77). The main theme then takes over once again, modulating to F# minor to represent Hades' victory. With relentless energy, catchy ostinati and opportunities to work on shifting, pizzicato and arco throughout, this piece will not dissapoint for audiences and students alike. A FEW NOTES: 1. I'd recommend rehearsing the rhythms of recurring ostinati together- first pizzicato then arco. You may get creative and incorporate scales with these rhythms. However you do it, it'll be important that each ostinato is played with precision and confidence. 2. Have fun with the waltz section! It's meant to portray the strange, whimsical nature of Hades' attempts to woo Persephone, so the awkwardness in delivery is encouraged! 3. All ritardandos should be exaggerated for the sake of drama. 4. Encourage your drumset player to explore different ways of accompanying the orchestra- the drumset part is a blueprint, not definitive instructions. 5.
