Published by Neal Fitzpatrick Editions (A0.955418). This is Impromptu No.6 For Marimba From Twenty Impromptus For Marimba by Neal Fitzpatrick. This set of music for Marimba is based my Twenty Etudes For Guitar. Both being polyphonic instruments the guitar and the marimba are certainly distant cousins so I believe the essence of works for one instrument can be expressed on the other, in either direction. While these pieces may in fact work as etudes for marimba I have purposefully renamed them. Whether or not they work as etudes I will leave up to each individual percussionist and teacher the extent of their didactic usefulness. Ultimately though all music can be used for study and my wish is these pieces can be used for study and performance. They are relatively brief and ideally played in sets, the number and selections being determined by the performer. Guitarist Neal Fitzpatrick has a B.M. from the Hartt School where he studied with Alan Spriestersbach and his M.M. from The Yale School of Music where he studied with Benjamin Verdery. He also studied extensively with Sharon Isbin and Sal Salvador. Based in Connecticut, he is active as a soloist and in the chamber music scene. This set of music for Marimba is based my Twenty Etudes For Guitar. Both being polyphonic instruments the guitar and the marimba are certainly distant cousins so I believe the essence of works for one instrument can be expressed on the other, in either direction. While these pieces may in fact work as etudes for marimba I have purposefully renamed them. Whether or not they work as etudes I will leave up to each individual percussionist and teacher the extent of their didactic usefulness. Ultimately though all music can be used for study and my wish is these pieces can be used for study and performance. They are relatively brief and ideally played in sets, the number and selections being determined by the performer. Guitarist Neal Fitzpatrick has a B.M. from the Hartt School where he studied with Alan Spriestersbach and his M.M. from The Yale School of Music where he studied with Benjamin Verdery. Bach reserved it for a few of his most impressive works, such as the Kyrie in the Mass in B minor. Bach composed his ‘French’ suites as a young man of thirty, when he was working at the court of Köthen. However, the suites have nothing to do with the court. Bach wrote them for teaching purposes in his own private circle. The first five appear in their original form in the little music book he compiled in 1722 for his second wife Anna Magdalena, possibly as a wedding present. But Bach continued to rework the pieces. The later versions, with the addition of a sixth suite, have survived thanks to the many copies made by his pupils. They are rewarding practice pieces that despite a certain compositional complexity (it is Bach, after all), do not make extreme demands on the player.

Reflection is a solo for 4.3-octave marimba. It was written in dedication to beloved friends and family who are no longer with me, but I always reflect on the good times I had with them. The piece utilizes a consistent flow of sixteenth notes. The beginning is straightforward with an intermingling of odd and even time signatures. The middle section is where the theme of reflection is shown. The entire range of the marimba is explored with an ever-present push-and-pull in the tempo. The end (coda) is a subtler nod to the opening theme and finishes with a delicate arpeggio.

Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (A0.869369). Program note. Program note:Eight Tarot Cards for Madam Rubio! was originally a 22-movement work for two pianos entitled, The Visconti-Sforza Tarot Cards. I sent a copy of the two-piano version to Nancy Zeltsman who, with Janis Potter, recently created the marimba duo, Madam Rubio. They thought some of the pieces could translate very well as pieces for marimba duo. I have to give complete credit to Nancy's ingenuity and creativity for this version. The transcription, arrangement and order of Eight Tarot Cards for Madam Rubio! are completely hers. [The numbering of the movements may look bizarre, but it is the original Tarot numbering.] I. Il Saltimbanco ... The Mountebank shuffles his cards and does a samba. XVI. La Torre ... The Tower topples and crashes onto the populace gathered below. II. La Papessa ... The High Priestess concocts a magic potion. XXI. Il Mondo ... The World would be a happier place if we all dance together. XIII. La Morte ... Death lurks around the corner. X. La Ruota della Fortuna ... Fortunes rise and fall unpredictably. III. L'Imperatrice ... The Empress dances all night. XIX. Il Sole ... Sunshine, margaritas and salsa cubana.
