A manuscript, ca. 1650, contains a version with the first line, “Sit you merry gentlemen†and the refrain, “O tidings of comfort and joy.†The earliest known printed edition of the carol is a London broadsheet dated 1760, in which the first line is the familiar “God rest ye merry, gentlemen.†By the 19th century, the carol was well-known, with Charles Dickens referencing it in his 1843 novella, A Christmas Carol.The phrase “God rest you merry†in the first line is an archaic idiom meaning “God grant you peace and happiness.†William Shakespeare used the phrase “rest you merry†in his plays, “As You Like It†and “Romeo and Juliet,†both from the 1590s; but Dickens recorded the phrase as “God bless you, merry gentlemen†in A Christmas Carol.The tune adapted for use in this arrangement was at the time of its notation a wordless, nameless melody noted in 1905 by folk song collector E. Quintrell from the singing of a Mr. Boaden in Cornwall, England. The tune was sent to Lucy Broadwood, editor of the Journal of the Folk-Song Society, who decided that it fit the ballad, “The Maid in Bedlam,†and published the tune and text together. The church had cleared the return of the choir, post pandemic, and it was my first Sunday of singing in well over a year. That Sunday as I recited the creed something happened when I reached the line “And His Kingdom Will Have No Endâ€. Was it louder? Was it spoken with greater conviction? Something was different! Maybe it was just me. I'm not sure but all I know is that every Sunday thereafter it had the same impact on me. Within a few weeks I decided to compose a choral piece about that very line. I had to! The Music For the most part the harmony and structure are traditional but do contain harmonic structures with a contemporary flair. The arrangement is refrain, verse, refrain, verse, bridge and then refrain. The first and 3rd refrains are highly similar while the second refrain contains a soprano section descant while featuring the bass's carrying the main melody. The overall intent of the music is that on every return to the refrain, it is louder than the previous refrain. This signifies the singers confidence growing, in the existence of God's Kingdom, after each verse. With that said the piece starts quietly, almost being heard from a distance. The refrain lyrics speak to the hope that we carry for God's kingdom while the verses speak to God and Jesus in a more intimate way. The bridge speaks to the strength of the Kingdom and then leads back to the opening refrain, now in double forte. The high point in the piece is reached where volume, emotion and a significant ritard occur at the phrase “we'll be togetherâ€. From there the piece decreases in volume ending in a quiet confidence repeating “No end, no end, no endâ€.

Bring His LoveInspiration (below is a note I sent to my sister) Hi Karen! In the fall of last year I started working on a new church anthem for FUMC. Over the years your choir has sung several pieces of mine; so I felt I should do something in return. I quickly got an idea for the music only (sometimes I will get some lyric ideas also, but didn't this time.) By the first of the year I had the basic structure sketched out on paper but then put it aside for Easter Rehearsals. When the pandemic stopped all church choirs I returned to the music and by early May had the score in the computer, close to completion. At that point I still didn't have any lyrics but began feeling that it should be about God's creation. All I could envision was a singer with his arms stretched out to the sun, the ocean, the moon, etc. while singing this piece. So I started searching for a possible prayer that might fit and came upon Canticle of the Son. As I read it through I liked the structure and began sketching out the lyrics. I couldn't help but wonder what our response should be to God's creation. How should we thank him or praise him or take care of it? I then turned my thoughts to FUMC and considered this - what phrase would sum up this churches mission? I almost immediately got Bring His Love. From there the balance of the lyrics fell into place. So attached is the recording and the music. I have no expectations but hope you and the choir enjoy the music. The Music The piece starts with 16th note broken chords in the upper register of the piano which lead to the opening theme. A tenor soloist begins by singing God's praises for all he has given us; ending with the thought How can we thank such kindness?; The answer Bring His Love the B section. At its conclusion we are returned to the opening theme, this time sung by the choir which again leads us to the same questionHow can we thank such kindness?, The answer Bring His Love the B section. A C section is then introduced with a change to a more beat driven accompaniment with the vocals alternating between the upper and lower voices. A return to the opening theme, with minimal chordal accompaniment, features the original soloist but then adds a second voice leading to a duet and a return to the broken chord accompaniment.. Finally the B section,Bring His Love is repeated and concludes in a rousing fashion.. Program Notes The piece could work very well for Earth Day celebrations.

This glorious composition would be appropriate to start a worship service, as an anthem and to close the worship experience. The organ part is of very intermediate difficulty but sounds big. Originally an organ solo, this arrangement requires substantial play of right hand playing two keyboards simultaneously. Tune name: He Leadeth Me.

The piece opens with a piano motif establishing the melodic material on which will be developed. Upon the entrance of the voices, a unison melody soon cascades into falling SSA harmonies and echoes. The piece picks up tempo with a rhythmic drive and a TB feature that expands into full choir befor going into a developing section that introduces the Latin phrase Stellae in Aeternum meaning Forever with the stars. A broad musical climax features numerous overlapping independent melodies previously featured before a dramtic final keychange and a slow, soft ending.

Cradle Song for SATB Choir and PianoWords by: William BlakeMusic by: Russell Ronnebaum About the piece:William Blake’s serene language inspired this dramatic setting of his poem Cradle Song. The piece opens with a constantly descending scale as a mother sings to her sleeping child. As more voices are layered in, the texture becomes increasingly lush, but still soothing. The third stanza of text is marked with peaceful harp-like figures (as thy softest limbs I feel) while the voices take over the calming decent into deeper, more peaceful sleep. The mother’s concern suddenly changes as the descending scale transforms and (the cunning wiles that creep) set in. Anticipation of escaping the terror of potential nightmares escalates as the ascending textures grow more tense and dissonant. The tension finally peaks with a breathless silence before resolving with (then the dreadful night shall break). The final phrase of the piece is a slightly transformed iteration of the opening vocal phrase and is a subtle nod to Johannes Brahms’ Wiegenlied: Guten Abend, Gute Nacht, more commonly known as Brahms’ Lullaby.Cradle Song was commissioned by Rincon/University High School Concert Choir in Tucson, Arizona; Directed by Mareena Boosamra.www.RRonnebaum.com

[“One for the little bitty Baby…Twelve for the Twelve Apostlesâ€] Once the complete set has been introduced, the numbers are performed in reverse order, in a frantic, prestissimo race from twelve to one. This is an energetic song!The Clarinet plays a featured role, enhancing the message of the lyrics. For example, the phrase “Children, go where I send thee†is matched by the Clarinet scampering up a scale as children setting forth on a trip.
