Its four lighthearted movements begin as the snow melts and life beings anew: following this is a hymn to spring and new growth, which is followed by the humorous nonsense song `Spring is Sprung' and finally the choir welcomes May in all its glory and promise of Summer. Alan Bullard's Canticle of Freedom (A Song for Peace), written in 1999 and first performed in 2000, is a prayer for a new millennium of freedom and peace, and each of the four movements takes as its starting point one of the verses from the nineteenth-century Christmas hymn 'It came upon the midnight clear'. It is scored for mixed choir, children's or youth choir, soprano and baritone soloists and a moderate size orchestra. The first movement tells of a solemn, still, and peaceful earth, and the second of a jubilant heaven. The third movement speaks of 'two thousand years of wrong' - the wars and persecution that have disfigured the last two millennia - and the last movement leads us from death to life, with a positive and joyful hope for the future: in the words of the hymn: 'When peace shall over all the earth its ancient splendours fling'. The text has been selected from a variety of poets and sources, ranging from mediaeval times to the present day. As years come and go, one increasingly recalls memories of earlier times. One of the most vivid and cherished memories I have while growing up is of Sunday mornings, going to church, sitting in the same pew each week with my grandmother, hearing and singing the beautiful hymns of our faith, and then returning home to the aroma of beef slowly roasting in the oven. My father directed the church choir, my mother and older brothers sang in the choir, so the wonderful music of our faith was instilled in me from an early age. This medley, and others in the series, are arrangements of many of my favorite hymns from those early years, many of which have been lost in more recent editions. For this series, I have mostly elected to use the older texts as that is the way they were first written and the way I first learned them. (See below for more comment on the texts in this set.) There is a reverence and beauty in the language enriching the vocal/choral tone which, I believe, is lost in contemporary, conversational, or politically correct syntax. I shudder to think of the day when a penitential phrase such as Hear thou my prayer, O Lord is rendered as Hey, God-dude, listen up - I'm talkin' atcha! I have also opted not to include the many wonderful hymns and carols which are associated with the major festivals of Christmas and Easter as those are commonly found in other collections. A caveat: I have no delusions, and I offer no pretenses, that these settings are great art. They are simply expressions of faith which I hope may bring a small measure of joy to other church musicians. The hymns in this set are Children of the Heavenly Father, Day by Day, Thy Holy Wings, and Beautiful Savior. A note on the texts in this set: Having grown up in a Swedish Lutheran church, the grandson of Swedish/Norwegian immigrants, and currently being choir director of another Swedish Lutheran church, these hymns have a special place for me. This set was originally arranged for my church choir with the first verse of each in Swedish. Being under copyright, permission was obtained to use the more familiar English translations of the first three songs for local use. For this edition, I have opted to create my own texts for the first and third hymns while the second is a translation in public domain. I have also provided a verse in English in lieu of the Swedish for those Nordically challenged. The fourth hymn is not a Swedish melody but for obvious reasons is a mainstay of the Lutheran hymnal. Like the other hymns, the first verse is in Swedish while the other traditional verses are also public domain.

I started composing A-nir in April 2002, as a piece for my composition class at the National Conservatory of Music. The title means lamentation in the Sumerian language and the text corresponds to the first twenty-one lines of The Lament for Sumer and Urim, written between 2600 and 1700 BC. The transliteration (i.e. a conversion to the Latin alphabet) of the original cuneiform version was done by the Oriental Institute of the University of Oxford and published online in the Electronic Text Corpus of Sumerian Literature. An analysis of the text presents a three-part structure, with the first and third sections closely related. In 2004, A-nir won the Vanguard Premieres Choral Composition Contest, sponsored by the Michigan-based choir Vanguard Voices, in the category of emerging composers, and premiered on June 5, 2005 at the Ford Community & Performing Arts Center, Dearborn, Michigan.

Creating choral versions of some of them is inspired by the solo recordings made by Jan DeGaetani accompanied by Gilbert Kalish, and by the choral recordings made by The Gregg Smith Singers.That Ives composed over one hundred songs is no small feat. Though they vary in quality as does his entire oeuvre, some of them remain almost mystical to me in their quality and effect. Like a Sick Eagle and The Indians (renamed here to The Native Americans to match the current times) are two such songs.When arranging Like a Sick Eagle, I visited the website for the Charles Ives Society where I discovered that he grouped this song with The Indians under the master title Set No. 10 of Three Pieces with the song Luck and Work placed between them for contrast. I knew I could arrange the first and third songs for mixed chorus, but I also knew right away that the second song would be all but impossible to arrange for I was already familiar with it. So I included it in its original version and labeled it for Solo Voice or Unison Chorus and Piano.In creating these arrangements I hope to rekindle interest in Ives’ music and its possibilities. It was the band's third single release and its first chart hit, reaching number 3 on the UK Singles Chart in November 1982. It has since been covered by an extensive list of singers, most notably by Gary Jules and Michael Andrews for the soundtrack of the 2001 film Donnie Darko. This version became a UK number one hit when it was released as a single in 2003.Orzabal wrote the song when he was 19, living in an apartment above a pizza shop in Bath. Here he would spend his time looking out the window, strumming guitar and watching people going about their daily business. It's a bizarre viewpoint to watch people go about their daily routine, having to work for a living, when you're sitting in a flat, unemployed, he said. That's where it came from.In keeping with the poignant simplicity of the Gary Jules version, this choral arrangement seeks to maintain the clarity of the text, with passing dissonances highlighting the word mad. The ending section includes overlapping motif ideas which can be effectively dramatized in accordance with the included performance notes. Mad World is available in three voicings – SSA, SAB and SATB – all with piano accompaniment.

It was premiered in February 2010 under the baton of Robert Istad by the John Alexander Singers. The first movement, Liquor and lacquer, sets Witter Bynner's Opus 6 and depicts infatuation through flighty changes of meter and sudden shifts of mode. The second, entitled An amethyst remembrance and based on a poem by Emily Dickinson, is built around a false cadence on the words 'T will keep. It is both a lighthearted reflection on the paradoxical and complementary relationship between love and pain, and a pining for love. The first two stanzas of Kinsfolk pit the tenors and basses, who deliver the first stanza’s melody, against the sopranos and altos, who answer in the second stanza with the same melody in a key a tritone away from that of the first. The third stanza is a fugato on the same melody, culminating in a fervid fortissimo. Duration approx. 6:30.
