English.This piece was written in response to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s I have a Dream speech. The text dialogues between two Langston Hughes poems, Harlem, and Dreams. One poem summarizes the pain of broken promises and the other encourages faith that things will get better, because the alternative is absolute despair. Both contain essential truths still evident in today's turbulent times.Although the text expresses sentiments that might be the stuff of childhood and naiveté, the music is turbulent, perhaps hinting at the cynicism of today's world. Dramatic and moving, with convincing choral writing and a virtuosic piano accompaniment, this piece is an experience not soon forgotten. Duration: 4:10.

The piece then transitions to a nostalgic perspective, as continued pondering gives way to softer sentiment and encompasses the climax of the setting. A long, languid section provides the ending material with an open-ended close in the piano depicting the dreamy haze of memory. The varied and thoughtful reading of the text yields varied textures in both the chorus and accompaniment, with each section of the chorus given equal measure. This work may be performed in conjunction with In this short Life (1.3562) to create a multi-movement setting titled Two Dickinson Poems on Time. Duration: 3:30.

Based on one of only several poems written by my mother, Jewish Holocaust survivor Rita Hoffman of blessed memory (1927–2018), Only from Blood Does Freedom Grow echoes the words of Hatikvah (The Hope), the national anthem of Israel. I have to believe that she wrote this poem around 1948 because of how it is worded. I of course knew the source of inspiration for this poem when I reread it not long ago—something I had not done since the 1990s—but its having been inspired by Hatikvah was really driven home to me by a Facebook comment. That comment inspired me to compose a piece in which the opening and closing sections are based on the opening melody of Hatikvah, but in which the middle section is newly composed. “Israel was not created in order to disappear - Israel will endure and flourish. It is the child of hope and the home of the brave. It can neither be broken by adversity nor demoralized by success. It carries the shield of democracy, and it honors the sword of freedom.” —John F. Something about the words and the way the piece ends resonated with a young composer, just discovering his voice. There is an easiness in the words—not one is greater than two syllables—yet, the poet demands of the Tireless Great…HEAR ME AND COVER ME. It is both too grand to understand and too simple to miss.
