Good for Missionary or Youth Musical Numbers - Soprano/Tenor or Men/Women Choirs This medley was written upon request for a missionary's send-off! It's great for: - Church Services - Missionary Farewells and Homecomings - Firesides - Youth Choirs - Adult Choirs - Soprano and Tenor Duet Purpose/Message: The medley's purpose is to invigorate us and to encourage us to be brave in sharing truth. It emphasizes the concepts of pressing on, having courage, and not fearing. Difficulty: Medium (There are some independent singing sections, some notes at the top of the soprano and tenor range, and a couple spots with less typical harmonies. It is, however, not a difficult piece overall. Those who are accustomed to singing in choirs will have no trouble but will be challenged enough to enjoy the piece.) Range: The notes are within range for a somewhat experienced or serious singer. If using in a choir, you can have the higher notes sung one octave lower by those out of range, or add a harmonic note as needed. There are only a couple of instances where this might be needed. Solutions to Problems: If you have youth afraid to go on missions, this song will help them take courage and be brave. If you have adults who are faltering from fear (as all do on occasion), it is hoped this song will bolster their courage and resolve. Duration of Work: This medley is approximately 4:12 minutes long. Returning home, he began his law practice and eventually became mayor of Guben. As an avocation, the Lutheran politician wrote poems–and soonbecame known as one of the leading hymnists of his time, ranked only behind Gerhard. He is credited for the creation of a group of so-called Jesus hymns, building the foundation for the pietistic hymn movement that would later sweep through Europe. Franck once wrote that poetry should be the nurse of piety, the herald of immortality, the promoter of cheerfulness, the conqueror of sadness, and a foretaste of heavenly glory. Indeed, his hymns echoed his own spirit of encouragement.Lyndell Leatherman (b. 1953) was born into a Nazarene parsonage in southeast Kansas. After studying church music and composition at Olivet Nazarene University (Kankakee, Illinois) and Illinois State University (Bloomington-Normal, Illinois), he launched into a life of music ministry. Since 1977 he has enjoyed a diverse career as church musician, editor, accompanist, composer, and arranger. In 1998 he became aware of Franck’s eucharistic / Advent hymn, translated either Deck Thyself with Joy and Gladness (Mattes) or Deck Thyself, My Soul, with Gladness (Winkworth). Because the text was unique in its unusually exultant treatment of the sacrament of holy communion, Lyndell felt that the hymn was worthy of renewed consideration in the third millennium of Christian worship. So he updated the language and gave it the new musical setting used here. ************It has long been my passion and privilege to create customized arrangements for the churches and schools with whom I have been associated. The psalm is a deeply personal reflection by the psalmist on the wonder of my being and on the inescapability of God's love, wherever we might try to hide, and whatever we might do ourselves or might experience - even death. This gentle setting for unaccompanied SATB choir uses the full range of all four choral voices, with just one divisi passage at the end of the composition in the tenor and bass parts. The piece should be sung meditatively, without too much drama, even in the fortissimo passages, aiming for a sense of wonder and inner peace. Psalm 139 O Lord, you have searched me out and known me; you know all my sitting down and rising; you discern my thoughts from afar. You mark all my journeys and my resting place and are acquainted with all my ways. For not a word is on my tongue but, Lord, you know it altogether. You encompass me, behind and before me, you lay you hand upon me. O where can I go from your spirit? Or where can I flee from your presence? If I climb up to heaven you are there; you are there if the grave is where I lie. (If you have an alto ((or soprano)) with a deep rich tone, you've found your lead vocalist). This arrangement combines the best of Carole King's words with the soul of Aretha. Since this is more of an R&B groove you won't hear the dissonance and syncopation used for many of the jazz choral tunes you'll find here, but it is not short on feeling (especially with a soulful lead). It is an easy piece to perform and should be well received (especially by the Baby Boomers). Just don't move it too fast.

I began playing it unattached to any tune and I just liked the way the line descended in the left hand and how I had to find voicings in the right hand that made harmonic sense – like a puzzle. As I was playing around with this puzzle, thoughts of my father were swirling around in my head – I was at the end of a 4 year period of separation from my parents owing to the fact that I’m a Canadian expat living in the US and the borders were closed for a long time because of Covid, and then I had work visa issues and my parents were getting older before my eyes. They were also losing friends to cancer and other ailments and my dad, in particular, had experienced the loss of many close family members and friends during our separation and it was taking a toll. One day I sat down and played the now familiar-to-me ostinato but randomly I started to sing “Beyond the Sea†over it and it fit perfectly. I thought it a happy coincidence. As the days went on I committed to putting my ostinato with Beyond the Sea and the lyrics started to seep into my brain. I have, of course, heard these lyrics many times before, (who hasn’t seen Finding Nemo?) but the lyrics didn’t mean what I thought they meant… They’re NOT about the ocean, they are about my dad!!! Well, kind of… I realized, through careful reflection and by slowing the words down, that the lyrics are talking about a person in heaven who is patiently waiting for their partner to join them. Somewhere beyond the seaShe’s there watching for me…It’s far beyond the starsIt’s near beyond the moon And the lyrics end with them meeting, “We’ll meet beyond the shore, we’ll kiss just like before,†and the song ends with: “and never again I’ll go sailing.†It’s like the big bang went off in my head about why all these thoughts of my dad, and his friends, and this arrangement, and what it all meant suddenly just MADE SENSE and I was able to start formulating a plan. Performance Suggestions: The improvisation solo in the middle should be free of any traditional “scat syllables†and should be more of a lament. Listen to singers like Aubrey Johnson improvise on ballads for inspiration. An idea for that improv section might be to have a male singer start the improv, then a female singer joins (as if together in heaven) then they sing letter F together (warning: will cause tears…). All solo sections do not have to be sung as written – soloists can take liberties with the melody as the spirit moves.

I am not sure whether rollicking should be used to describe Christmas music but, if it is allowed, then it surely applies here. Written mainly as a piece for unison voices, variation can be made by using solos or men's / ladies' voices for the different verses. Following the final half of the last chorus, which has a very simple and effective descant, there is a short (2-bar) final section in S(divisi)ATB with an alternative setting for SAB. The organ accompaniment reflects the joyous feel of this traditional carol in 12/8 with a running counter-melody on the brighter stops over chords in the left hand - easier than it sounds, so good for the kudos of your organist. (It will also work well on a piano.) Used by the arranger as a final item in many Lessons & Carols services to great effect. Even the smallest of choirs will make a good impression with this.

It can be sung by a choir (separate mens' and womens' parts) and/or sung by a congregation. Here you have an arrangement with a definite Renaissance feel. I can hear finger cymbals ringing a counter rhythm throughout (sorry, I didn't write it in, but I'm sure you can figure it out). The parts are open and airy and the song has a light, joyous feel to it. While the instruments are published as violin, cello and drone (piano, etc) this should be playable by any pairings of treble and bass instruments that play in C. I am 17 years old and this the very first composition I have ever written. My vision for the world is to try and help people keep positive no matter how bad or how unbarring the situation may be. There are many people on the planet that have issues that need to be dealt with and I believe that one way that they can help themselves is by trying to thing of the times where things weren't so bad. Even if they were bad, those memories should be the reminders to help you grow throughout life. This is the message that I am trying to portray with Those Memories. At the age of 15, I had a vision to help people not to forget the good and the bad moments of their lives because once the memories are forgotten, people will never be able to go back and tell stories about how they developed and came to be.  Some of the lyrics were picked from a poem that was written 4 years ago in 2016 called One Brief Moment by John Fleming. The poem was found on a website that provides poems to those who like reading poems. The website is called poetrysoup.com and I think it's a pretty cool website for poem readers, so if you like poems and you want something new, you can go there and check it out. I hope you all enjoy the piece as much as I had fun writing it. Haha.
