Fantasias were the height of musical sophistication in England in 1600s. Henry Purcell originally composed the two fantasias Z. 713 and Z. 743 for strings. Characterized by surprising modulations, their harmony shows them to be ahead of their time. The present arrangement for 4 guitars is based on the autograph manuscript of the composer. It is ideal for performances at upper music-school classes and young musician competitions.

All the verses, choruses and breaks are present except the fade out, which is replaced by a defined end to the piece (so the audience knows when to applaud!)This arrangement sits somewhere between intermediate and advanced intermediate, with each of the parts having music in more than one voice from time to time to make a fuller sound.Everything is comfortable to play, and my transcription is based closely on the official video from Peter Cetera. I've changed the key slightly so the music fits the guitar neck better and the modulation in the reprise is in a familiar key for the players.The music rises and falls as the song progresses, making the dynamics happen almost automatically. The dynamics of the original are retained in my arrangement, but the fingering is left to the players... Playing the lower parts up the neck will give a rich, cello-like, sound, but a first position performance will be robust and will use many familiar guitar shapes.This is a charming, gentle, pastoral piece and the sweet sound of the guitar suits it well.Those UK players of a certain age might just remember that this music introduced The Woodentops, a children’s string-puppet TV series which ran in black and white from 1955 till 1957, and was regularly repeated until 1973.I hope you enjoy playing this piece!

The bass-line is fun to play, with a catchy, almost-funk-like rhythm, and the chords are straightforward and well-known. Written without repeats (to reduce the chance of errors!) this music will just fit on a music stand without page-turns! I hope you'll enjoy the catchy, almost hypnotic rhythm, and I'm sure the audience will!

This arrangement starts off in the key of A, with a deep, dark tune (as you'll hear on the soundfile). As each of the 4 verses enters, the texture thickens a little, and between verses two and three there is a big and uplifting key change and the tune climbs over an octave higher. With lots of imitation and a gentle flowing rhythm, this piece has something for each of the players to make their own. In the final verse, big flowing Spanish-sounding chords generate a massive wall of sound and the piece concludes with a slowed down end to the tune.This arrangement has featured in concerts in the UK for many years and it's become a real favorite with the audiences.I hope you enjoy playing it!

Perhapsour instrument?s greatest joy is the fact that it exists in so many forms andstyles of music. Some players prefer the electric guitar and read from TAB,others have a classical background and are therefore more familiar with notes;others still prefer reading from chord charts with fretboard diagrams.
Thisdownload considers all of these musicians.
Guitar1 is the main tune, as played by Hank Marvin in The iconic recording made byThe Shadows. The music is provided in both notes and TAB.
Guitar 2is a part with chords. This is given with chord symbols, fretboard diagrams andrhythm patterns.
Guitar3 is designed to include the less-experienced player. It is in open positionand the part, being easy to read, is given in notes. This is an optional part.
Guitar 4is a transcription of the bass line. It is an interesting andrhythmically-exciting part. It is in simple positions and is given in notesonly.
Guitar4 can also be played by a bass guitar. The part is also given in bass clef(sounding an octave lower).
