The F-major Romance is a tender, adagio cantabile movement full of beauty, requiring grace, poise and elegance to perform properly. It has been said that it could have been titled Song Without Words, the music being so lyrical of character. 'Romance' may have been written as a slow movement to a Violin Concerto that was never completed. This arrangement by Gordon Cherry is a wonderful addition to the Euphonium repertoire.Almost 10 minutes in length, this work for advanced performers will be a great addition to any recital.

Sérénade is an early work of Rachmaninoff, from a grouping of five short solo Piano pieces titled Morceau de Fantasie written in 1892 and dedicated to his harmony teacher Anton Arensky. One of his most famous works, the Prélude in C-sharp minor is from this same Opus 3. Opus 3, No. 5 in B-flat minor is the final work of the set and is in a gentle Waltz style, sometimes venturing into the Dorian mode.Rachmaninoff's lush harmonies and gorgeous melody work very well for the Euphonium with this fine arrangement by Ralph Sauer.For advanced performers, this movement is about 5 minutes in length.A perfect companion to the Rachmaninoff - Fantasy Piece, Op. 3, No. 3, also available from Cherry Classics. The Three Romances Without Words, Opus 17 were most likely composed for solo Piano in 1863 while FaureÌ was still a student at the ÌEcole Niedermeyer, but not performed in public until much later. They have all of the recognizable features of the composer: simplicity, lyricism, charm and fluidity. Their inspiration may have come from the earlier works by Mendelssohn which Mr. Sauer has also lovingly given life to. These 3 short works can be performed by intermediate to advanced performers.

The Chants du Rhin (Songs of the Rhine), a cycle of six pieces, based on poems by Joseph Méry, were written in 1865, and Bizet performed two of them on 16 April 1866 at a soirée of the Beaujolais Philharmonic Society. The songs are grouped symmetrically around La bohémienne as the central piece, framed by two meditatively yearning pieces (in E and D flat major) and two vividly exuberant ones (similarly in E and D flat major), with L’aurore serving as an introduction. In this cycle Bizet takes up the theme of the gypsy girl which had already entered European music in the operas The Bohemian Girl by the Irish composer Michael William Balfe and Verdi’s Il trovatore, as well as in Franz Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsodies for piano. The musical format of songs without words is not unusual, as Mendelssohn composed a number of very beautiful ones for the Piano and of course Rachmaninoff’s Vocalise is one of the most famous works in the musical repertoire. The Five Songs Without Words were premiered in New York City in 1921 by the soprano Nina Koshetz. In 1925, while living in Paris the composer arranged the five brief songs for Violin and Piano. Their haunting, bittersweet and lyrical style is typical of Prokofiev and the advanced performer will find these wonderful miniatures totaling 12 minutes in length a perfect vehicle for a major work on a recital. Mr. Sauer has scored these songs beautifully for the Euphonium and Piano.

Mr. Sauer's arrangement incorporates three of them: Intermezzo, Rêverie and Sérénade. The Petite Suite was dedicated to the Belgian Countess Louise de Mercy-Argenteau, who was a supporter of Borodin and his music. After Borodin's death in 1887, Glazunov orchestrated the Suite. The music has that Eastern flavor so indicative of Borodin's melodies, mysterious, lyrical and subtle. Advanced performers will enjoy this work of almost 7 minutes which has been so beautifully arranged by Mr. Sauer.

It consists of a theme and eight variations, plus a grand finale. It was written in two forms, one for two pianos and the more well-known orchestral version.There is a musicological controversy as to whether the theme is actually from the pen of Haydn or another mystery composer. Some are now referring to it as the Saint Anthony Variations. Nevertheless, this 18-minute work by Brahms is a magnificent work of genius.Not to be outdone, Mr. Sauer has created his own masterpiece of this work, arranged for virtuoso artists of the Euphonium (solo part is in bass clef) and Piano. One of his most famous works, the PreÌlude in C-sharp minor is from this same group of music. Opus 3, No. 3 is also sometimes referred to as the Melody in E major. Its slow tempo allows the mood of the work to reach a giant climax. Rachmaninoff's lush harmonies and gorgeous melody work very well with this arrangement by Ralph Sauer.For moderately advanced performers this movement is about 4 3/4 minutes in length.
