OF SHADOWS ON THE STARS, BY KURT M. MEHLENBACHERFOR SOLO PIANO, EARLY ADVANCED, 14 PAGESOf shadows on the stars finds its name within the famed poem Sure On This Shining Night by James Agee. The poem receives a great deal of discussion on its meaning, contemplating if the words are hopeful, mourning, rife with humility, or a statement of resignation.My take on the poem is that it is of deep hope and contemplation, declaring that the world is held in the warm embrace of summer and that life if being kind. Most strikingly, though, is the last line of shadows on the stars, forming the crux of the text. It is the moment when the words change perspective from the stars casting shadows on the earth to the earth casting its shadows on the stars.Regardless of what that may mean exactly, its elegance caught me, and its inherent imagery helped guide the formation of this piece. Unlike Lauridsen or Barber–neither of whom I am claiming to bear resemblance–this work actually has no text, and is driven more from the diction and isolated events present in the text rather than an interpretation of the poem as a whole.

Kansas’s acoustic hit “Dust In The Wind” is a reflective song about the inevitability of mortality and the insignificant role every person plays in the bigger picture. It was written by guitarist Kerry Livgren, who was inspired by a Native American poem containing the line “For all we are is dust in the wind”.The music came from a picking exercise he was doing that his wife suggested he make a song out of. It was the last addition to the album. “Dust In The Wind” was a top 10 hit in the US and Canada in the spring of 1977 and remains the biggest hit of their career. End Of The LineAlbum & Songbook review by:  Kathy Parsons (MainlyPiano.com):Isadar’s fourth solo piano album is a blend of smooth jazz and new age stylings, showing both his impressive technique and sensitivity to melody. Several of the eight selections are free-form and improvisational, revealing some of Liz Story’s influence on his music. Some of Isadar’s earlier recordings have very dark, moody sections, but this one stays fairly upbeat and optimistic without being ear candy. The music is complex enough to sink your teeth into, and yet is accessible enough to enjoy as a backdrop to a quiet dinner or an evening with a good book. Joyful Running begins the journey with an exuberant and uplifting piece that reminds me a little of some of Spencer Brewer’s bouncier compositions. Fountain of Life is a beautiful piece with a water-like flow that never stops in its 10 1/2 minutes. I listened to this CD several times without realizing that this song was that long. It flows and meanders so effortlessly that it seemed no longer than the other seven selections, most of which are between four and five minutes in length. Unstructured and free, this is one of my favorite tracks. I also really like the title track, which is even more abstract and unstructured. The tone is of searching and moving forward. End of the Line is my favorite on this album. Very introspective and contemplative, this seems to be a very personal piece. It is the most somber track, but one still senses hope despite the ending of something dear and important. Or maybe it’s simply the end of the journey and the dread of returning to real life - I feel this way on the last day of my vacations! It is a wonderful and moving closing to an excellent album.The companion songbook is expertly transcribed and engraved by David Shenton of New York Music Publishing. The layout of the music is clear and uncluttered, and the notation includes pedal markings and dynamics that allow the pianist to express the music as closely as possible to how Isadar played it on the recording.  A few of the pieces are quite long and require a more advanced pianist who is able to express the nuances that keep the recording so interesting, but several of the pieces are well within the capabilities of upper intermediate players.  Some of the rhythms are a little bit tricky, but the majority of the left hand parts are running eighth notes, which make it easier.  None of the key signatures are difficult, and none of the chords have a reach of more than an octave, making this music very playable for smaller hands.  My favorite pieces to play in this book are Joyful Running, Voice of God (Thanksgiving), Smoke Signals, and End of the Line.Isadar is an artist on both Enlightened Piano Radio & Whisperings Solo Piano Radio, the latter featuring some of today's biggest names in solo piano music, including Ludovico Einaudi, David Nevue, Brian Crain, Kevin Kern, Robin Spielberg, Michele McLaughlin, Philip Wesley and over 300 more... Etude 3.0, the last of the single-interval material. tritones are rather easier to mirror, and otherwise make symmetrical than other intervals. Thus this piece is 100% mirrored, symmetrical, and topographically identical hand-to-hand. There are many structures which are also inversions, played simultaneously. Diminished 7ths, Dom7 b5 chords, even fifths with the tritone sandwiched in between the two halves of the fifths, are in evidence here. There are rhythmic syncopations and shifting accents. All in all a real showpiece of perpetuum mobile dissonance which makes sense even to the listener or player accustomed to Romantic literature. It's a gallop! Approx running time is 4 mins 20 secs. This is the first in a set of twelve meditations for solo piano. This advanced composition (4:15) is a slow build, starting with a whisper but ending in an all-out roar. The composition is patterned around the chaconne, a form similar to the more familiar theme and variations. But instead of a melodic theme, the chaconne uses either a repeated bass line or chord progression to build upon.The first few iterations of this piece are rather simple, but by the last two iterations, the performer must make large leaps with both hands, playing dense chord clusters. By far, this piece took me the longest to learn to play, though the composition came to me quickly.

Growl is a short, fast-paced piece for solo piano. The piece is cast in a roughly ABA/fast-slow-fast form, and centers around two musical ideas: a driving left-hand ostinato and a 16-bar melodic line. As the piece opens, the ostinato immediately establishes itself, low and menacing, punctuated by snaps and snarls as it races forward. When we first hear the melodic line, it is soft and distant – almost creepy – and it immediately repeats itself, much louder and more violently. After a brief return to the opening of the piece, we have a moment of respite as the ostinato abruptly drops away, and time stands still for a moment before giving way to a peaceful, ethereal version of the melody. But peace doesn’t last long as the melody becomes increasingly dissonant and violent, culminating in a brutal, crashing cacophony that surges into a triumphal climax. As the grand chords ebb away, the ostinato begins to quietly re-insinuate itself back into the fabric of the piece, building slowly to a return to the opening material and a screaming version of the melodic line. Suddenly, the triumphal chords come thundering back, warring with the ostinato – each interrupting the other, clashing to a frenzied, crashing end. Duration: ca. 5 min. The left-hand quarter triplets in measures 2 and 11 are meant to be stressed to echo the right-hand quarter triplets. Measure 9 has the most challenge with the 4 sixteenths against the eighth triplet, so take time to practice that measure repeatedly and line up the eighth triplets with the sixteenth notes. The last measure has 8 against 3 (8 sixteenths against the 3 quarter triplets).
