In 2018 I finished the 300+ page manuscript and usedit to teach two university music course in Haiti that year.<br> <br> It had been many years since I hadtaken the course myself, and needed to add to my knowledge of late 20thCentury and early 21st Century classical music composition techniques.During my research I grew interested in a classical music minimalist styleinfluenced by Terry Riley and Philip Glass. I have tried to use some of theirideas in this composition. There are 10 sections that can be repeated,reordered, and combined so that the performer actually makes a contribution tothe creation of the work.<br> <br> Playing the piano at church behind areading of Luke 2, was my first experiment in this new form of music. When Ireturned home, I began to experiment in writing down the experience andrefining the work according to these minimalist ideas. The composition could beperformed with or without the narration, with a single narrator in a singlelanguage, or with the narration in multiple languages and/or with multiplevoices.<br> <br> Suitable for preludes,offertories, concerts, personal meditation. Includes 2 versions 1) piano score,letter size 2) piano score, small pageformat for performing from 10.1 inch tablet. The Concerto for Oboe and Strings in D minor, attributed to Alessandro Marcello, is one of the most performed oboe concertos in the repertory. It was written in the early 18th century and has become Marcello's most famous work. Bach wrote a keyboard transcription of the concerto. Here we offer an arrangement for Violoncello solo and piano based on Bach's transcription.<br> <br> The Oboe Concerto in D minor, S D935, is an early 18th-century concerto for oboe, strings and continuo attributed to the Venetian composer Alessandro Marcello. The earliest extant manuscript containing Johann Sebastian Bach's solo keyboard arrangement of the concerto, BWV 974, dates from around 1715. As a concerto for oboe, strings and continuo its oldest extant sources date from 1717: that year it was printed in Amsterdam, and a C minor variant of the concerto, S Z799, was written down.<br> <br> Bach's keyboard version was published as an arrangement of a concerto by Antonio Vivaldi in the 19th century. In 1923 the C minor version of the oboe concerto was published as a composition by Benedetto Marcello, Alessandro's brother. In the second half of the 20th century several publications indicated Alessandro again as the composer of the piece, as it had been in its early 18th-century print, and the oboe concerto was again published in its D minor version.<br> <br> <br> <br> This arrangement was written for Piano Solo.

Each person will completethe sentence with the destiny of their choice.<br> <br> - TwopennyLoaf: This is a neighborhood (and geographically a cape) in the city ofGloucester, Essex County, Massachusetts, USA. It is believed to have gotten itsname because it is shaped like a (bread) loaf that at the time cost twopennies.<br> <br> - ThreeBridges: It is a city somewhere between London and Brighton, and a nodalpoint where trains typically split. Musically, the most minimalistic of all thecycle.<br> <br> - Four Oaks:There are numerous places so named, both in England and the US, and possibly inother countries. I can imagine that there were actually four oak trees planted near.<br> <br> - FivePointz: Neighborhood in Queens, New York. A graffiti mecca that wasdemolished in 2014 to build expensive buildings. And yes, it is spelled with zin this case.<br> <br> - Six MileBottom: Is a hamlet near Cambridge in England. The hamlet derives its namefrom its distance from the start of Newmarket Racecourse and because it lies ina valley bottom. There is no public transport. The old train station, closed in1967 for lack of use, is now a private residence.<br> <br> - SevenKings: It is a neighborhood in Ilford, East London. The earliest recordeduse of the name is as Sevekyngg or Sevekyngges in 1285, possibly meaning'settlement of the family or followers of a man called Seofoca'<br> <br> - EightStreets: it is a (very sought-after) neighborhood located in the heart ofthe historic South End of the city of Boston, Massachusetts, USA.<br> <br> - Nine Elms:a district of South West London. Nine Elms Lane was named around the year 1645,from a row of elm trees bordering the road.<br> <br> - Ten TenRoad: it is a place -actually the main road- in the town of Apex, NorthCarolina, USA.<br> <br> - ElevenLands: this place is mentioned in an old legal report from around 1782 asexisting in North London ("a place called Eleven Lands, containing fiveacres of arable, formerly Cosby's, beonging to a farm in the said parish ofBletcheley...", in " Acollection of the Reports of Cases, the Statutes, and Ecclesiastical Laws,relating to Tithes", volume 3). It has certainly changed its name.Musically, this last piece has a certain tango aura.<br> <br> <br> <br> <br> <br> Why eleven pieces and not more? The truth is that - incredibly as it mayseem - I didn't find any place called "Twelve" something. Yes thereare such names in other languages, but I wanted to keep some consistency. During the course of my studies in Paris, I was amazed to discover that Debussy planned over 50 theatrical works but only finished two of these entirely by himself (the opera Pelléas et Mélisande in 1893–1902 and the ballet Jeux for Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes in 1912–13). It was as if creating the music itself was of greater importance than controlling its final sound, even if Debussy was an imaginative orchestrator when he found the time and energy to do it. It also seems true that Debussy also preferred inventing ideas to turning them into complete pieces. However, despite the lack of detail in many of his sketches (missing clefs, key signatures, dynamics, phrasing, etc.) the notes themselves are surprisingly accurate, whether or not they can be compared with a later draft. Thus, a large number of sketches exist for his Chinese ballet No-ja-li ou Le Palais du Silence and it is not too difficult to see which parts of Georges de Feure’s 1913 scenario (see below) inspired which ideas. But Debussy hardly made any attempt to join them together after the first few bars.<br> <br> It was usually up to his publisher, Jacques Durand, to find solutions when Debussy risked a breach of contract. Debussy was supposed to supervise the orchestrations completed by others, but this supervision was usually very light and restricted to quiet, sensitive moments in which problems were easier to spot. Far from jealously guarding every one of his created notes, as Ravel did, Debussy once even went as far as to ask Koechlin to ‘write a ballet for him that he would sign’ on 26 March 1914 when he was hard-pressed to fulfil his lucrative contract for No-ja-li with André Charlot at the Alhambra Theatre in London. In the end, Debussy (through Durand) sent Charlot the symphonic suite Printemps instead, whose orchestration had been completed by Henri Busser in the Spring of 1912.<br> <br> So, when I was offered early retirement as Professor of Music at Liverpool University in 2004, I seized the opportunity it would give me to spend time trying to reconstruct some of Debussy’s lost potential masterpieces from his existing sketches and drafts—then orchestrating them in Debussy’s style when this was appropriate. I had begun this mission in 2001 with the most promising project, the missing parts of Scene 2 of La Chute de la Maison Usher and the sheer joy it gave me at every stage persuaded me to tackle other projects, especially when Debussy experts were unable to identify exactly where I took over from Debussy (and vice versa) in Usher.

During the course of my studies in Paris, I was amazed to discover that Debussy planned over 50 theatrical works but only finished two of these entirely by himself (the opera Pelléas et Mélisande in 1893–1902 and the ballet Jeux for Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes in 1912–13). These seven short pieces were composed in the early months of 1976 as imitations of some of the composers and musical styles of the early twentieth century. They were never performed or published at the time. They are useful as didactic studies for student pianists. The seven pieces areI. Intonatione In the Whole-Tone ScaleII. Prélude and Nocturne in ModesIII. An Impression of ImpressionismIV. An Imitation of Roy HarrisV. Adding Chord-Tones While Shifting MetersVI. Ragtime BitonalityVII. Diatonic Waltz Program Notes: The Intonatione In the Whole-Tone Scale recalls the Renaissance Italian musical form that evolved into the prèlude in later organ music, as well as the use of Italian forms in the atonal music of Arnold Schoenberg, and some neo-Baroque composers of the twentieth century. In contrast, the whole-tone scale is reminiscent of generally tonal composers, including Debussy. The Martial Prèlude and Nocturne in Modes recalls the many pre-twentieth century pairings of preludes with fugues and other forms. The pairing with a nocturne evokes an air of Romanticism. The Martial Prèlude is a march-like fanfare, in Lydian mode on C. The Chopinesque Nocturne is in Phrygian mode, on E flat. An Impression of Impressionism evokes some of Debussy’s Preludes pour Piano, including a suggestive title at the bottom of the page, as Debussy himself did. For the young pianist aiming to master the works of Debussy, the arpeggio patterns, block chords, and sequential motives will prove helpful as introductory exercises. An Imitation of Roy Harris was inspired by the occasion in 1976 when James Siddons heard Roy Harris speaking in person about his compositions. Siddons was impressed by Harris’ youth in Oklahoma, and how the solidity of American rural life shaped Harris’ symphonic music. When taking questions at the end of the lecture, a young composer asked Harris about his creative methods when composing music. Well, Harris responded, You don’t pull up a potato just to see if its growing. Adding Chord-Tones While Shifting Meters is a technical exercise that is nonetheless fun to listen to, and fun to play. A student pianist should be asked to analyze the harmony in this piece, and to describe what shifts are taking place when the musical meter (as well as phrasing and rhythm patterns) change. The echoes of Stravinsky and Bartók should be apparent to the listener and pianist. Ragtime was not regarded as art music of the same caliber as Stravinsky and Schoenberg, or even Copland and Gershwin, until the 1970s. The inclusion of ragtime in these seven pieces would not have been accepted by composers of the early twentieth century, Stravinsky excepted. Ragtime Bitonality explores how such piano music might have sounded had major composers of the 1900-1920 era taken an interest in its march-like vitality. There is even a touch of atonality! In contrast to the powerful rhythms and juxtaposed tonal relations in much early twentieth-century music, there were works by many composers that continued familiar melodic patterns and balanced forms, offering musical relief in a turbulent era in music history. The Diatonic Waltz is offered here as a quiet, peaceful conclusion to our tour of musical styles in classical music of a century ago. The book indicates where the various pieces begin and end, but can also be played as one long piece. Although the theme of the music is very somber and bleak, the music covers the broad range of emotions we all felt during that period - anger, sadness, hope, determination, resolve, fear, grief, etc. Although the recording is an improvisation, Isadar incorporates a recurring theme that holds the work together as a single entity. Some pieces are very slow while others are lively and even fast. All thirteen pieces are in C minor/Eb major, but the variety of moods and tempos keep the music evolving without becoming repetitious. Composed between January and March 2003, the Suite for Piano was written for a recital by pianist Qi Liu (1976-2017), at Stony Brook University, in March of 2003.The opening of the first movement evokes bells, not unlike those in Rachmaninoff’s RusÂsian Easter (the finale of his First Suite for Two Pianos). This is contrasted with a short and murky rising gesture. The middle section incorporates pianistic patterns (some reminiscent of Debussy), a yearning IbeÂrian melody, and a barely-recognizÂable snippet of Chopin used for a climax. The murky gesture eventually returns, introducing a triumphant stateÂment of the opening bells.Early on, I had decided the piece should include references to the other pieces on the reÂcital’s program: Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 18 (op. 31, No. 3) and Brahms’s F minor SoÂnata (op. 5). As soon as I had word from Qi that she was going to play the Beethoven, I immediÂately wanted to hear it. I wasn’t familiar with the piece, and since I didn’t have a score or a reÂcording of it at home, I decided to download it in MIDI format from the internet. Unbeknownst to me, the computer’s rendition transformed the lively secÂond movement scherzo into a slow-moving hymn which reminded me of the Ode to Joy. I was quite surÂprised the next mornÂing when I went to the muÂsic library and listened to a reÂcording played by a human. Nonetheless, I was drawn to the melody, and I found the slow effect interesting, so I deÂcided to base my middle movement (the slow movement) around the theme of BeethoÂven’s scherzo, making it the hidÂden theme for a short set of variations. The end of the movement also contains less direct referÂences to the music of Brahms (very short alluÂsions to the Sonata and to the Variations on a Theme by Haydn).The last movement explores fast and light fingerwork, in a sort of toccata or capriccio, proÂviding a flashy ending to the piece. As in the first movement, the form is A-B-A. Before the return of the first section, a little dance evokes the opening of the piece. (The murky gesture from the first movement also finds its way into this last movement).Each of the three movements experiments at one point with using the sustain pedal in order to create a wash of sound.
