Any thought, idea, perception, or being can easily give the appearance of being a singular construct: an indivisible whole. However this observation is rarely accurate. Any one emotion, opinion, ideology, or revelation is most often capable of being divided into components consisting of our values, experiences, states of mind, and psyches. Similarly any one person, who may appear to be of a single mind, is generally comprised of any number of distinct Jungian Archetypes acting in concord.This piece is an expression of the un-oneness inherent in any oneness. It is, like us all, a product of multiple (in this case three) individual ideas, each with their own character, and played in their own set of keys, that act together to give the illusion of an indivisible whole.

Several of the eight selections are free-form and improvisational, revealing some of Liz Story’s influence on his music. Some of Isadar’s earlier recordings have very dark, moody sections, but this one stays fairly upbeat and optimistic without being ear candy. The music is complex enough to sink your teeth into, and yet is accessible enough to enjoy as a backdrop to a quiet dinner or an evening with a good book. Joyful Running begins the journey with an exuberant and uplifting piece that reminds me a little of some of Spencer Brewer’s bouncier compositions. Fountain of Life is a beautiful piece with a water-like flow that never stops in its 10 1/2 minutes. I listened to this CD several times without realizing that this song was that long. It flows and meanders so effortlessly that it seemed no longer than the other seven selections, most of which are between four and five minutes in length. Unstructured and free, this is one of my favorite tracks. I also really like the title track, which is even more abstract and unstructured. The tone is of searching and moving forward. End of the Line is my favorite on this album. Very introspective and contemplative, this seems to be a very personal piece. It is the most somber track, but one still senses hope despite the ending of something dear and important. Or maybe it’s simply the end of the journey and the dread of returning to real life - I feel this way on the last day of my vacations! It is a wonderful and moving closing to an excellent album. The companion songbook is expertly transcribed and engraved by David Shenton of New York Music Publishing. The layout of the music is clear and uncluttered, and the notation includes pedal markings and dynamics that allow the pianist to express the music as closely as possible to how Isadar played it on the recording. A few of the pieces are quite long and require a more advanced pianist who is able to express the nuances that keep the recording so interesting, but several of the pieces are well within the capabilities of upper intermediate players. Some of the rhythms are a little bit tricky, but the majority of the left hand parts are running eighth notes, which make it easier. None of the key signatures are difficult, and none of the chords have a reach of more than an octave, making this music very playable for smaller hands. My favorite pieces to play in this book are Joyful Running, Voice of God (Thanksgiving), Smoke Signals, and End of the Line. About the song and the arrangementThis is my solo piano arrangement of Let There Be Peace On Earth, one of the most powerful songs about peace ever written. I arranged it with the intermediate piano player in mind. Although is not particularly jazzy, it includes some jazz harmony and voicings. I think its beautiful melody benefits from clean voicings and an almost classical accompaniment style. Having said that, I included chord symbols so that jazz pianists can do their thing.I recommend to everyone who wants to learn it to also study the lyrics (who I didn't include with the sheet music, because it is after all a solo piano arrangement. Knowing the words will undoubtedly help with interpreting the music more adequately from an emotional point of view.About the technical aspects of this arrangementAlthough the arrangement sounds simple,  it poses several challenges. For example, it has a polyphonic element to it which requires the pianist to use the sustain pedal and make smart fingering choices. For this reason I included my suggestions for both. Please feel free to use your own.FeelThe arrangement is meant to be played very expressively. I suggest you vary the tempo and dynamics. Bringing out the melody is also very important.At last, I hope you will enjoy playing my arrangement and consider including it in your recitals. Its happy, lyrical tune has everyone humming along, and the piece may be played at 120 bpm or a little slower. There are many tunes that incorporate the Sacred Harp text of Come, thou Fount, but the Nettleton tune is the most popular. In this arrangement, the 3/4 timing has been changed to 4/4, which gives the melody an upbeat, syncopated feel.My rendition is four pages long and runs about 2:00 minutes. Key of Eb modulates to F on page three. The dynamics change on every page so be mindful of the dynamic markings. Intermediate level and perfect for church offertory, prelude or postlude.

It contains a little interlude in the style of JS Bach that I hope will amuse.The left hand can be tricky at speed but single notes can be played instead of octaves and tenths and the chords can be simplified without losing the overall style.I haven't included dynamic markings and fingerings, leaving this choice to the individual pianist. Likewise with the use of sustain pedal. Seldom can you get two pianists to agree on these things!Please note this is a solo piano version and does not contain notation of the other instruments on my YouTube video. It was however written for solo piano and sounds just as good with or without other instruments.

This short piece (1 min, 50 sec) for piano is the fifth in my series of impromptus inspired by the sounds of childhood, namely the theme music from early nineties video game systems like Nintendo. The exotic sounds found throughout this arrangement would be described by many as sounding Spanish, Flamenco, or Egyptian. Impressions of these musical traditions are often characterized by the augmented second melodic interval and the use of modal rather than tonal organization. In the minds of many composers, these musical locales once represented the edge of western civilization or the known world. As such, they serve as creative jumping-off-points to imagine new worlds.The introduction section must be played with a far greater sense of rubato than the playback recording. At the new tempo, interpretation is more straight-forward. One technical and fingering challenge lies in the melodic figures in the right-hand that are frequently harmonized in parallel thirds. A Week in November… and what a week it was! It was the week of the US Presidential Election 2020. As I write these words, the absurdist tantrums of the Trump-Pence campaign versus the reasoned compassion of team Biden-Harris continues even well after the results have been called in the Democrats’ favour. There will not be the usual respectful concession speech and transition of power. I worry every day about how these next few months will be so very difficult, maybe even dangerous, for my American friends. Those convoys of flag waving Trumpists gleefully, openly, encouraged by their ‘leader’, attempting to block the democratic process was horrifying to witness. Was America on the brink of civil war? It still doesn’t seem far fetched to think that as I sit in my studio on the other side of the world, feeling helpless. The only thing I felt that I could do for my friends over there was to offer them a way to feel safe and loved in the moment, a bit of musical mindfulness. It was in this spirit that I wrote the second movement of this work, subtitled A Pocket Full of Calm. My excellent pianist friends Erica Sipes (USA) and Sandra Mogensen (Canada) adopted my little tune, recorded it on their social media to share said moment in the moment as it were. I hope it helped. I mean, if I can bring to even just one person some sense of calm solidarity, I’m happy with that. The fifth movement in the set, Victorious, resolute, but gracious, was a stream-of-consciousness creative response to the Biden Harris victory and the way they handled it so eloquently, so humbly, how they gave the world a sense of optimism once more. For a long while, I’d felt that I probably wouldn’t be welcome in America. As a mixed race, queer woman I was the antithesis of everything they valued. But now, people like me over there can feel human again. The relief! As for the other days of that week in November, they are part of a continuing series of daily composition exercises I started back in October in an effort to end a lengthy period of pandemic-induced creative block. Using a combination of exercises from Music Composition Toolbox (Barbeler/Blom/Hindson) and Brian Eno’s Oblique Strategies I’ve been able to find my creativity again. Starting a composition ‘habit’ is the best thing I’ve done for my writing all year and is how I mean to continue for a long time. Sally Whitwell12 November 2020

The second movement of Blaze's Piano Sonata in E Major No. 1, following A Look Into The Past, A Moment In The Present was primarily inspired by Beethoven’s Piano Sonata in F Minor No. 1 and Piano Sonata in C Minor No. 8 “Pathetiqueâ€. I gave it its name because I find it to be a very relaxing and dawdling piece. It reminds me of someone just lounging around and enjoying nothing but taking in the moment. The syncopated melody gives off the feeling that his thoughts are also jumbled together. He is not actively trying to achieve anything, but instead just letting anything come to him. It is supposed to contrast the first movement by being simpler and more relaxing (where the first is dominating and complex). I especially wanted a much more lyrical and monophonic (single voiced) piece to contrast with the polyphony (many voiced) and layers of the first.

(Luther published the Ninety-five Theses in 1517 and was excommunicated in 1521.) Ein Feste Burg was translated into English by Miles Coverdale in 1539 with the title, Oure God is a defence and towre. The English text most familiar to me was translated by Francis Hedge in 1853. ♫ Luther believed in the power of music. In 1558 in the Forward to Georg Rhau's Symphoniae he wrote “I truly desire that all Christians would love and regard as worthy the lovely gift of music, which is a precious, worthy, and costly treasure given to mankind by God. … next to the Word of God, the noble art of music is the greatest treasure in the world. It controls our thoughts, minds, hearts, and spirits.... Our dear fathers and prophets did not desire without reason that music be always used in the churches. Hence, we have so many songs and psalms. This precious gift has been given to man alone that he might thereby remind himself that God has created man for the express purpose of praising and extolling God.†♫ In his lifetime, Luther made 3 major contributions to the Church: the doctrine of salvation by faith alone, the belief that Scripture should be translated into the people's language (producing a translation of the Bible into German), and the birth of congregational singing. In Roman Catholic churches of his day, only the cantor and a chorus sang the mass in Latin. This beautiful melody can now be found in most every hymnal.The first third of the prelude begins with lush harmonies evoking a hint of jazz. The middle of the piece is an improvisation on the tune that is plaintive and contemplative. The final section is set in the classic pentatonic tradition reminding one of the strength and durability of America's pioneers. A perfect way to close out Advent.
