The key of 6 flats is used, so that the player or student can get the feel of being somewhat percussive on the black keys. The white keys used are Cb, Fb and Abb! The melody is stated in thirds, with larger sonorities at the cadence points. The chords Fb Maj7 and Abb Maj9 are used, so that the sudden shock of seeing chords in sharps juxtaposed against the 6 flats is avoided. It really is easier to play than to read. The piece repeats, with a vamp intro and coda. Approx duration 1 and a half mins. Left hand is half-note bassline throughout.

It was used in the 1980 film Urban Cowboy and appeared on both the Urban Cowboy soundtrack album for that film, as well as on the Anne Murray's Greatest Hits compilation album, issued in late 1980. One of my piano students got tired of the usual books. In order to keep his interest in piano lessons, I started writing original pieces for him. Dangeris a fun piece to play that is really not too dangerous. It is useful in teaching several technigues. Getting the repeated patterns and the feel for the syncopation correctly played will enhance the overall performance. My student loves doing the arpeggios so this piece ends with an arpeggio that can be played at lightning speed if the student wishes to close out the song with a 'bang'!

One of my auntie's got killed coming home from work late one evening by a drunk driver who was not obeying the traffic signals. I remember thinking to myself that this wasn't fair. It wasn't right. This was the first time that someone close to me was ushered out of this world. I started looking at my own life. Was I ready to leave this world behind? My auntie didn't get to decide. One moment she was here. The next she was gone, leaving her children behind. As I looked at myself I noticed there were a lot of flaws in my character. I liked some things about myself, however, there were a lot of other character traits where I felt that I was lacking in integrity and honesty. The question, What am I doing here? made me want to correct those flaws so that I could feel good about meeting God when I leave this world. I have found that change is possible.

As a vocal major and accompanist during my undergraduate and graduate years, I became familiar with a great number of lieder by Franz Schubert. It's far too difficult to pick a favorite, but this song was one of the first pieces I learned to sing. As common in so many of his songs, Heidenröslein has a very simple, folk-like melody, and the accompaniment almost has the feel of a pianist vamping at the keyboard. My arrangement is very much inspired by the music of George Winston. The right hand has a somewhat ostinato feel in the opening. When the melody enters, the right hand figure is moved into the left hand while the melody floats above as though carried on a summer breeze. The second verse takes on a more music box feel as it makes frequent pauses in the music, but the melody is always present in the right hand, even when it is surrounded by a steady stream of eighth notes.The work closes with a return of the opening material and fragments of the melody tossed back and forth like the falling petals of the rose on the heath.

When using the intervals of a 4th and a tritone as material for a non-jazz piece, one has to be careful not to make the music sound like jazz, as this particular interval set comprises the essential dominant chord voicing for most jazz pianists. G-C#-F#, for instance, as a representation of A13 or A7. So, this piece uses complete symmetry, mirroring and topographically equivalent fingerings throughout, so as to avoid this problem. Admittedly, the spellings are not easy to decipher. They often use the flatted form of a note in one clef, and the sharped form of that same musical alphabet letter in the other. This is to avoid endless naturals, as the half-step motion, so typical of movement between 4ths and tritones, necessitates. Arpeggiated figures, block chords, and even some delicious chimes at the close make this piece more than a mere display of intervallic and pianistic options. It has a feeling all its own, as the sequential chromatic meandering up from the lower end of the keyboard to the upper shows each color in turn, all the while keeping to the strict rules that these etudes were constructed under.This is the last of the groups of two interval pieces. Running time is just under 3 mins. MBB.

I've found that music with autobiographical references has a particular expressive strength.I was in Finland once (performing at the World Tango Summit in Seinäjoki, 2011). The city of Seinäjoki is quite close to the Arctic Circle, so in summer the sun doesn't really set: instead of a night you have several hours of an eternal twilight.The feeling was that of a transition stopped in time, as a slow motion film of someone springing over a wide river. This can be a wonderful experience (and for me it was), but can be also unnatural to us, Latinamericans, used to the day is sun and night is no sun approach to life.Anecdotically, the temperature during these days in Seinäjoki was 31 Celsius. So my experience of Finland is that of a very warm place. I guess other persons have colder experiences. There are three versions of this piece: Piano solo (pedal all throughout, resonances) 7:24 Tibetan singing bowls 7:40 Electronic sounds (ambient) 7:50 The bowls version is recorded at A = 432 Hz. Here is the first in the sequence of dual-interval selections. The half-step and the whole-step, close cousins, but, Do They Get Along? Sure! The traditional musical element that uses both these intervals is the octotonic or diminished scale. So, this material figures prominently in the first section, accompanied by alternating major and minor sevenths. The piece uses mirrored and symmetrical passages in 7ths next, followed by the opposite smaller intervals. Rolled mirrored clusters, symmetrical open chords, every possibility is explored here, each aspect showing its own identity. The intervallic unity gives the piece, and ALL the pieces in this series, a continuity that binds the disparate pianistic applications together into unified and identifiable musics. Running time is approx. 3 mins 30 secs. at suggested tempo. Any piece in this series can go slower, if the player needs the time, or faster, if the player feels like gunning it! MBB.

End of the Line is my favorite on this album. Very introspective and contemplative, this seems to be a very personal piece. It is the most somber track, but one still senses hope despite the ending of something dear and important. Or maybe it’s simply the end of the journey and the dread of returning to real life - I feel this way on the last day of my vacations! It is a wonderful and moving closing to an excellent album. The companion songbook is expertly transcribed and engraved by David Shenton of New York Music Publishing. The layout of the music is clear and uncluttered, and the notation includes pedal markings and dynamics that allow the pianist to express the music as closely as possible to how Isadar played it on the recording. A few of the pieces are quite long and require a more advanced pianist who is able to express the nuances that keep the recording so interesting, but several of the pieces are well within the capabilities of upper intermediate players. Some of the rhythms are a little bit tricky, but the majority of the left hand parts are running eighth notes, which make it easier. None of the key signatures are difficult, and none of the chords have a reach of more than an octave, making this music very playable for smaller hands. My favorite pieces to play in this book are Joyful Running, Voice of God (Thanksgiving), Smoke Signals, and End of the Line.
