It is for piano students ready to move from beginners stage and looking for something a little more challenging. There are two versions of Just a Little Blue, an Abridged version (single page) and a Full version (double page). The Abridged version could also be used by more advanced pianists for sight-reading practice. While this piece uses blues harmonies, it does not follow the classic 12-bar structure of the Blues, hence the title. Rather it has a 10-bar theme which is repeated in a more complex version. The accompanying mp3 file is a demo version only.

A fast song, powerful rhythm and easily recognizable melody makes this a great pleasure to play. When I originally arranged this, it was more difficult to play due to large jumps in the left hand that gave the song a little more depth. For the sake of playability I rewrote those jumps and reduced them while still maintaining most of the original drive. As composed and recorded by Kathleen Ryan on her CD Under the Greenwood Tree.Kathleen's composer notes: A story song that began with a simple Western waltz that came to me while we were driving into town one day. (I have a way of notating a melody very quickly so that I don’t lose music in such situations.) Until I sat down to do the first recording of this music, Water in a Dry Land was still just the little waltz. But while the music expressed all the longing for water that we here in the dry land feel, it didn’t actually have any water in it, and as soon as I started recording I wanted some watery music to be there. So I made up the middle section, which seems to me to be quite watery, and practiced it and thought I was done. Then the next time we recorded it, on listening to the playback, all of a sudden I wanted to hear the dry land! That was the genesis of the opening chords, which repeat after the middle (water) section. I was still refining (that is, re-writing) this music up to the very day I recorded it!Advanced: a challenging piece that offers many contrasts of mood and style. Architectural in its structure, with sections depicting the sandstone cliffs of New Mexico, the earth’s longing for water, and the welcome blessing of gentle rains.

A Week in November… and what a week it was! It was the week of the US Presidential Election 2020. As I write these words, the absurdist tantrums of the Trump-Pence campaign versus the reasoned compassion of team Biden-Harris continues even well after the results have been called in the Democrats’ favour. There will not be the usual respectful concession speech and transition of power. I worry every day about how these next few months will be so very difficult, maybe even dangerous, for my American friends. Those convoys of flag waving Trumpists gleefully, openly, encouraged by their ‘leader’, attempting to block the democratic process was horrifying to witness. Was America on the brink of civil war? It still doesn’t seem far fetched to think that as I sit in my studio on the other side of the world, feeling helpless. The only thing I felt that I could do for my friends over there was to offer them a way to feel safe and loved in the moment, a bit of musical mindfulness. It was in this spirit that I wrote the second movement of this work, subtitled A Pocket Full of Calm. My excellent pianist friends Erica Sipes (USA) and Sandra Mogensen (Canada) adopted my little tune, recorded it on their social media to share said moment in the moment as it were. I hope it helped. I mean, if I can bring to even just one person some sense of calm solidarity, I’m happy with that. The fifth movement in the set, Victorious, resolute, but gracious, was a stream-of-consciousness creative response to the Biden Harris victory and the way they handled it so eloquently, so humbly, how they gave the world a sense of optimism once more. For a long while, I’d felt that I probably wouldn’t be welcome in America. As a mixed race, queer woman I was the antithesis of everything they valued. But now, people like me over there can feel human again. The relief! As for the other days of that week in November, they are part of a continuing series of daily composition exercises I started back in October in an effort to end a lengthy period of pandemic-induced creative block. Using a combination of exercises from Music Composition Toolbox (Barbeler/Blom/Hindson) and Brian Eno’s Oblique Strategies I’ve been able to find my creativity again. Starting a composition ‘habit’ is the best thing I’ve done for my writing all year and is how I mean to continue for a long time. Sally Whitwell12 November 2020

The idea behind these series of compositions was to create easy, short and accessible piano pieces that sounded nice and that would encourage my students to learn various pieces, rather than learning a single long piece.My aim as a composer with this series is to evoke feelings usually associated with the night, such as calmness, tranquility, serenity, among others. The harmony utilized in these pieces is rooted in tonality. However, the fairly constant use of chords with added 6ths, 7ths, 9ths, as well as a few modal exchanges, add color to the harmonic sense of the music, perhaps even contributing to create a relaxing mood.Also, these pieces have a pedagogical edge. They are meant to be utilized to showcase chord triads, broken chords, music sequences, the use of the pedal, among many others. If you are a teacher, feel free to use these pieces as examples for your lessons.The last but most important thing I would like to add is to just enjoy playing these pieces. Do not hesitate in diving into a calm mood while playing these series of compositions, since they were created with that objective in mind. FROLICAdvanced Intermediate Piano Soloby ROBERT VAN HORNE  9 pagesDuration is about 3:20 In 1995, while performing at Nordstrom Valley Fair in San Jose, CA, I was asked to participate in a group of other Nordstrom pianists from all over the United States in a charitable Holiday project to benefit the “Make A Wish Foundation.†I was told to record several Holiday pieces and submit them to the main office in Seattle. It was a sunny Saturday morning in May when I recorded in my home a few of my favorite holiday songs, like Silent Night, Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen and other Christmas carols.After doing this, I asked myself, why don't I compose a new instrumental piano piece and submit it along with the other familiar demo examples. I imagined children playing in the snow, sledding down hills, their excitement on Christmas morning, and the wonderful spirit of the holiday season. After a little while I composed this piece. I then thought to myself; “I’ll call it CHRISTMAS FROLIC. Even though Nordstrom never used this piece on their Holiday CD, I performed it for audiences. I remember once telling a friend, “Here’s a new piece I composed called CHRISTMAS FROLIC, however, it can only be played during the Christmas season. My friend replied; “Robert, why don’t you just call it FROLIC, then you can play it all year long.The sheet music is clearly notated with dynamic and articulation marks, phrasing, pedal indications, suggested fingerings and appropriate musical terms for playing. This advanced intermediate piano solo can be played year around. It is an excellent teaching piece that can be used in recitals and school musical events and makes and excellent encore for professionals.It is a delightful musical listening treat for audiences and ideal for more advanced piano students. FROLIC was recorded as a piano selection in 1998 on Robert’s CD entitled PIANO & MEMORIES. I wrote this piece for Halloween this since I wanted to try writing something that is a little bit spooky and eerie. Initially, I used one of my old ideas from a while ago to be used as the main motif/idea for the piece but it wasn’t really what I was going for. Instead of just creating something entirely different, I decided to incorporate this old idea with a motif that I would make now for the piece.I first created the chord progression that is heard at the beginning and then I created the melody that is heard later. This is then when the old motif comes in. It is very different from the new idea and so it creates a good contrast and keeps the piece interesting. It was good playing around with bring the 2 different motifs in and out and the combining them later in the piece to create a new motif. I took some inspiration from ‘Every 27 years’ or the ‘IT Theme’ with the light hearted melody and the darker overtones. One of my favourite things to do in compositions is begin really simple but then build up the tension and excitement as I have done in this piece.

Solo Piano Arrangement By Thomas GuntherSanta Claus Is Coming To Town is another one of my favorite Christmas songs. For some reason I love playing it in a bluesy style, with some jazz voicings. The bridge is more in stride piano style.About The ArrangementThe arrangement includes different stylistic elements found in more traditional popular piano music. It definitely has a bluesy vibe, but also shows elements of jazz and stride piano.When it comes to the form I extended it by adding an intro that comes back in-between sections in form of an interlude. There is also an outro. About The Sheet MusicThe sheet music is basically a transcription of my recording. It contains jazz chord symbols and plentiful of articulations as well as some dynamic markings. My Arranging WorkflowI have different approaches for creating solo piano arrangements of songs. The one I took here is as follows. First I come up with different ideas, try them out, and after a while settle on those I like best. Once I practiced and internalized those ideas I press record and hope for the best. Before the final version is done, I record myself many times over. This gives me the opportunity to improve upon each version until I have one that I feel comfortable with.Recommendations For Learning The SongI recommend that you first listen to my performance while reading along in the sheet music. This way you get a better understanding about the phrasing and the rhythmic feel.You may want to spend a little time just vamping a few bars to get into the groove. When that feels good move on to different sections.The bridge is different in feel because it is based on stride piano rather than blues. Stride piano features big jumps in the left hand and big intervals between the outer notes (up to a 10th). Should you have difficulty in playing those big intervals (smaller hands will make this hard) you may roll the notes and use the sustain pedal.Is This Arrangement For You?This solo piano arrangement is for every pianist who would like to try playing Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town in a more bluesy-jazzy style. Dependent on what your specialty is musically speaking, you made benefit from it in different ways. Here are some examples.Classical PianistsIf you are a classical pianist who rarely listens to jazz and blues music, this arrangement might be a great way to dip your feed into more contemporary genres and styles like blues and jazz. This said, it might be quite challenging. Not from a technical point of view, but from a musical point of view. For example, swung eighth notes and accents and phrasing in blues and jazz are somewhat contrary to classical music. It's gonna be a great learning experience for sure!Jazz PianistsShould you be a jazz musician or blues musician, you may not necessarily want to play the arrangement as written note for note. Instead, you might just fall in love with some of my ideas and create your own arrangement based on those.This goes especially for the solo section. You can play my solo or use it as inspiration for your own solo. The first movement - No Toe Tapping - opens with a little motive, then plays around with it in an effort to frustrate anyone tapping their toes in the audience. [Yes, that’s a tip ‘o the hat to Dave Brubeck’s “Unsquare Danceâ€]. No. 2: Surprisingly Calm - has some interesting and thick sounds. Don’t be afraid to take it slow and easy and make it as rubato as you like. The third movement - Over-Caffeinated - starts with a tri-tone, just because it sounds interesting and a bit jarring. The Right and Left hands argue for quite a while. It all ends in a major blowout, complete with references to the first two movements, and then the final surprisingly pleasant C major chord is followed by the right hand, which JUST has to get in the last word.

Back in the day, when my solo performing career was just getting off the ground, I hit the first composing dry spell of my entire life. As I am certainly not prone to exaggeration or wild mood swings, I naturally knew that never again would I compose another piece of music; and, needless to say, I found that a bit depressing.“While driving home from a gig, through the Iowa vastness, I was brooding over the loss of my fledgling career as a musician, when I noticed that my car’s odometer read 22122. I have always loved symmetric numbers! And I quickly realized that 22122 can be notes of the scale, say D-D-C-D-D. I listened to that, then saw that the odometer had turned over to 22123: D-D-C-D-E. The rest, as they say, is history. Oh, the total stops (rests) near the beginning are stop signs; you’ll find several in every midwestern town you are wishing you could speed through! I should also say (because my first car would like me to): whenever in this piece I was a bit stuck for music, all I had to do was get out on the open road and drive a bit and more music would come. Which is the other reason I say the piece was written by my car.“The music travels through a landscape that is totally unexpected, before having a mellow time in the big city that night. (Again, true to life on the road in my first car.)â€Advanced. Must be able to handle syncopation, large reaches, leaps—and perform with attitude.

His career has taken him around the world playing a variety of styles with some of the most recognized names in the entertainment industry. He toured nationally and internationally, playing classical music for Mikhail Baryshnikov; jazz fusion with The John Payne Band; Latin music with Pucho and his Latin Soul Brothers; pop music with Rupert Pina Colada Song Holmes; and rock & roll with John Hall, opening for Little Feat.Louis began playing the piano by ear at 4 years old and began lessons at 5. As a teenager, he played guitar and keyboard in bands and went on to study music at Stony Brook University, Boston Conservatory and Berklee College of Music.For the past 30 years, through his production company, Landon Music Company, Louis has written and produced music for film, video, and commercials. He recorded his first original album, Love Songs & Jazz, in 1994 and has since released 38 Albums/CDs on the LCI Record label. His latest, entitled Provocative Piano, was released on January 29, 2021.
