This is a collection of fifteen works for piano that usesa series of songs and dances that belong to the traditional Costa Ricanimaginary, as well as the Two-voice inventions (BWV 772-786) by JohannSebastian Bach. In a stricter sense, these pieces are parodies since they usefragments of existing works as the starting point for the creation of newcompositions. In this case it is a double parody process because they emulatenational melodies, and they are stylized in light of other compositions and musicalpatterns of the Baroque period. These inventions (understood essentially asnovel creations) do not follow a formal, harmonic or strictly scholasticcontrapuntal scheme and they are rather free reconstructions of the originalmelodies, with some fundamental features of the two-part Baroque works. As forthe thematic material, the original melodies correspond to anonymous works ofCosta Rican folklore and others whose authors are known -such as Pasi�nAcevedo, Rafael Chavez Torres, Julio Fonseca Alberto G�mez and H�ctor Z��iga,among others- all of them found in printed versions or sound recordings. Thetonal scheme of the compilation traces the order established by Bach in hiscollection of inventions. The purpose of the works does not go beyond offering anapproach for the pianists in training to different musical styles of theCentral European tradition from melodies of the Costa Rican own popularrepertoire.

Louis Landon?s Healing Hearts 3 is the third in a series of solo piano albums that are comprised of improvisations that were created while clients were in session at his Healing Piano of Sedona (AZ). These sixty-minute healing and music sessions consist of forty minutes of mentoring and twenty minutes of music that includes personalized music for the client?s own use. Landon created Healing Piano of Sedona several years ago to help people live life joyously, passionately, and stress- and disease-free. Landon is a Steinway Artist who has been a life-long musician. Healing Hearts 3 is his twenty-first album and fourteenth solo piano collection. Each of the thirteen pieces on the album was inspired by a different ?soul journey,? so the music is quite varied although it maintains a very calming and peaceful vibe throughout.

It is interesting to note that Healing Hearts 3 has the closest to the ideal sound Landon has been looking for on his recordings. He attributes that achievement to the mastering and editing expertise of Joe Bongiorno of Piano Haven Studio, also in Sedona. Landon has been trying to get the sound of a classical concert hall in his Peace Palace studio recordings and this album definitely has that sound, which is exceptionally beautiful - clear, warm and resonant.

Healing Hearts 3 begins with ?Standing In the Light,? a softly flowing piece with a poignant melody that gently soothes the heart - a favorite. ?Heart Song? is hushed, intimate and obviously very personal. ?Triumph of the Soul? starts out in the deep bass of the piano - very dark and lost. As the piece evolves, it gradually lightens as it moves up the piano keyboard, ending in a very positive place. I?ve often said that the piano is the best instrument to express the sound and feeling of rain and ?Night Rain? proves that point again. More energetic than most of the other tracks, the notes flow freely: sometimes smoothly and evenly, sometimes more percussive like big fat raindrops - love it! ?Tears? is heartbreak set to music, although tears are so often a big part of the healing process. Such deep emotion is expressed in this piece! Landon wisely follows sadness with ?Happy Man,? a lively slice of pianistic sunshine. ?Phoenix Rising? begins in the deep bass of the piano, obviously signifying a very dark place or crisis. Over the course of the composition, there is turmoil and pain, but then Landon gradually moves the piece into the upper end of the piano to a much lighter and more peaceful place - a stunning piece! ?Healing Time? is gently uplifting and so soothing and serene that I can actually feel it melting away tension - another favorite. ?Music Runs Through Me? flows quickly like a stream with sparkles of sunlight dancing happily on its surface. ?Balance? returns to a calm stillness that comes when things/life are in balance. Slow, lyrical and very peaceful, it?s the perfect closing for another great album from Louis Landon!

I have thoroughly enjoyed all three Healing Hearts albums, but I think #3 is my favorite. It is available from LouisLandon.com, Amazon, iTunes and CD Baby. Very highly recommended!

Louis Landon continues to soar on the wings of an amazingly creative period - now going on several years! Healing Hearts 2 is the follow-up to Healing Hearts, which was released the end of 2014 and is nominated for Album of the Year on Whisperings Solo Piano Radio. This is Landon?s second album for 2015 and he?s already working on his first release for 2016! The fourteen tracks on Healing Hearts 2 were gathered from improvisations created during sessions at Landon?s Healing Piano of Sedona (AZ), so the piano solos are very smooth and soothing - probably the most relaxed and relaxing album of Landon?s career. Recorded on a Steinway B grand piano at The Peace Palace in Sedona and mastered by Joe Bongiorno at Piano Haven, also in Sedona, the piano sound is impeccable - very warm and enveloping. Landon told me that this is the best music he never wrote, referring to the fact that the music just flows out of him during these sessions, reflective of each client?s wants and needs at the time of the session.

The full Healing Hearts 2 album is a little more than an hour of quietly uplifting music and works exceptionally well as a relaxing and healing experience. I?d like to mention a few favorite pieces, though. The album begins with ?Sisters,? a very gentle piece that expresses the love and special bond that can exist between sisters. Very light and free, it?s a beautiful start. ?Free At Last? starts out almost mournfully - dark and searching - gradually becoming livelier and more optimistic. It?s an amazing musical journey and development! ?Relax and Enjoy? expresses the warm comfort of just letting go and ?being? for awhile - leisurely and contented. ?Feeling the Love? is so warm and open that it feels like a musical embrace - melodic yet very free. ?All Is Well? is almost ambient, but what a wonderful atmosphere of quiet contentment it creates - a perfect peace. ?Transition? is like floating on a cloud - effortless and so peaceful. ?Dark Nights? is one of the most beautiful pieces Landon has recorded. It reminds me a little bit of Beethoven?s ?Moonlight Sonata? and some of Chopin?s Nocturnes - so poignant and heartfelt that it takes my breath away. The gracefully flowing ?Dancer? expresses freedom and elegant movement. ?Lullaby? closes this excellent album with a piece so soothing it could melt the tension out of anyone. Gorgeous!

Composer?s Note:

The title of this piece is taken from Sir Philip Sidney?s c.1590 sonnet sequence, known as Astrophel and Stella. The sonnets are meditations on romantic love, with the titular names derived from the Greek roots aster (star) and phil (love), and the Latin stella (also star). Hence, Stella is the object of Astrophel?s affection.


For interested students or teachers, here are a few pedagogical notes:

This piece is suitable for an intermediate-level student. It is playable as a simple waltz as-written, or as a jazz ballad with straight eighth notes. There are some left hand oom-pah shapes, as well as a couple of large arpeggiated shapes where the right hand might want to catch the top note of bass clef, primarily if a student?s hands are small (like the composer?s).


About the Composer:

Emily Nafius is a pianist in Southern California with her musical roots in jazz. As a soloist or sideman, she has performed at numerous music venues around California in an eclectic mix of styles, and recorded with a variety of jazz musicians, singer-songwriters, and rock bands. Her work as an accompanist spans classical, jazz, and musical theatre, receiving praise for her theatre work as a pianist and ensemble leader. She has maintained a teaching studio for over fifteen years, instructing musicians of all ages.

Fresh on the heels of his highly acclaimed chart-topping CD, Reconstructed, Isadar gifts us with a sparkling new album of holiday-themed instrumental music for solo piano, entitled ?O Christmas.? Given the proximity to his recent release, one might assume that this one was quickly produced, but in reality O Christmas has been 7 years in the making. Various circumstances including other recording projects, a segue into the field of video production, and a cross country move from NYC to the west coast and later back again, created delays with the completion of the album. But as they say, ?good things come to those who wait.?
One of the most interesting things about this album is the fact that the selections are traditional Christmas songs, yet some were chosen because they are less well known, or ?off the beaten path? as Isadar characterizes them. This follows the pattern set by his 1999 Christmas album ?In Search For The Meaning Of Christmas,? yet this new CD mines even deeper in its quest for interesting and unusual choices.

The album begins with a track called ?Good Christian Men.? Steeped in history, the song dates back to 14th century Germany and its Latin title was originally ?In Dulci Jubilo? before it was translated into English in the 1800?s. Isadar?s interpretation creates a lively and festive air that makes a perfect portal to the recording. The high-spirited mood continues on the next song, ?Teddy Bears Picnic,? which although not technically a Christmas song, has been interwoven by Isadar with ?March Of The Toys? to tie it in with the holidays ? a clever arrangement of these intriguing melodies. One of the more well-known carols on the album is ?O Christmas Tree? and is sure to have listeners humming along with it?s familiar refrain.

A track entitled ?Still? is an innovative rendition of the classic ?Still, Still, Still? which Isadar has put his own spin on, or as he jokingly puts it ?jazzed up shamelessly.? No such liberties were taken on the classic ?O Come, O Come, Emmanuel,? however. This song provides a showcase for Isadar?s accomplished grand piano work, featuring lush left hand arpeggios creating a strong foundation for his more delicate right hand melodies to dance upon ? a powerful and moving combination. Another of the less well known, yet equally inspiring tunes is a Puerto Rican carol entitled ?Song Of The Wise Men.? It has been said that: ?Christmas is, above all, a children?s holiday, and many hymns are addressed to children, reminding them that the real reason for the sugarplums and Christmas trees is the celebration of the birth of the Christ Child.? This theme is well reflected in Isadar?s choice of ?O Come Little Children,? based on a carol from the 1800?s.

Among my favorite tracks on the album are the wistful strains of ?Greensleeves 2012,? which Isadar interprets with elegance and grandeur and also pays ?homage? to Liz Story?s brilliant take on this enduring composition. This is followed by a rendition of ?Masters In This Hall,? which can best be described as, well? ?masterful.? The song dates back to the sixteenth century, and is another of the less well-known tunes that Isadar has chosen to feature. The album draws to a close with Isadar invoking artistic license on what is perhaps one of the most unique and liberal versions of a classic carol heard here yet. Based on ?We Wish You A Merry Christmas,? Isadar characterizes it as ?an uninhibited melancholy arrangement.? While I don?t know if ?melancholy? is the word I would use to describe it, it does have a pensive quality and is presented more as a nocturne than usual lively carol it is known as. I really liked the interpretation and respect Isadar?s creativity and distinctive rendering of the song.

?O Christmas? is an exceptional holiday collection, not only for Isadar?s elegant grand piano artistry, but as well for the interesting and sometimes unexpected repertoire contained within. Like ornaments on a tree, the songs adorn the album, enhancing its beauty with their diversity, individuality, and timelessness. Given the well-deserved accolades and popularity of Isadar?s distinctive piano style, I?m sure that fans will want to include ?O Christmas? in their collection and make it a part of their holiday tradition.

La Cumparsita is a tango written in 1916 by the Uruguayan musician Gerardo Rodrigues. The title translates as "the little parade". It is among the most famous and recognizable tangos of all time.
In my solo piano arrangement for advanced intermediate students, the L.H. provides a typical tango pattern to accompany the melody in the R.H. This peace will be a hit at your next concert!

Legend has it that the gamonales (landlords) used to keep their money in botijuelas (earthen jars) with the purpose of insuring it against the thieves. These jars were hidden in the thick walls or floors of the houses. As time went by, it so happened that the owners of the money usually forgot the place where they had hidden it and died without finding it. According to popular imagination, the soul of every person who dies having their money buried did not rest in peace until it was found. But on other occasions the owner of the money had been so greedy in life that, even after death, his spirit was still taking care of its capital, and lashed out against the person who dared to find it and take it away. To appease the spirit, it was necessary to invoke the sound of the dance "La botijuela", so that it would not take revenge and reveal the hiding place with the booty.
The work ?Desvar�os sobre La botijuela" (Deliriums on ?La Botijuela?) was inspired by this popular Costa Rican dance and legend. It is a really divertimento for solo piano, consisting of ten variations (or rather free reconstructions) of this Costa Rican folk dance. This musical theme is a danza criolla (creole dance), a rhythm that in Costa Rica is clearly related to other international dances such as habanera and contradanza. Some of the variations of this work make direct musical allusions to the style of composition of important figures of Latin American pianism, namely: Heitor Villa-Lobos, Manuel M. Ponce, Ignacio Cervantes, Astor Piazzolla, Ernesto Nazareth and Alberto Ginastera. Other variations, on the other hand, set rhythms present in the traditional musical imaginary of Costa Rica, even though they are not unique to the country. Such are the cases of rhythms such as pasillo, calypso, swing criollo (cumbia) and tambito. All these adaptations of the original theme are always made from a traditional tonal scheme. In this way, it demonstrates how a melody can be framed with extreme versatility in different rhythmic and stylistic patterns of the continent. That is why it is accurate to affirm that ?Desvar�os on La botijuela" is a composition eminently Latin American.

As an accompaniment in the home of people's lives during the 50's onwards, music between the stoves was a common activity and made the task of cooking more enjoyable, adding culinary art to the musical art. Even in the flamenco melodies, some secret recipes or ingredients were noted, perhaps to perpetuate the tradition and passing between generations of culinary ideas, thus preserving the essence of typical stews in musical styles such as tanguillo, tango, rumba or rancheras. This piece aims to exalt the romantic and also lively essence of this genre full of color and colonial charm. Mestizo receives its name from the syncretism of Spanish influence and genuinely Latin American colors. The form is given by the alternation of two main themes: one of melodic nature object of variations and the other of motivic construction for extension and development. The harmonic concept is given mainly by the inherent progressions of this autochthonous genre, however, the romantic language complemented by jazz sonorities are responsible for making the exaltation of this popular rhythm. Thus, Mestizo is a tribute to Colombia, its music, and its charm.

Souvenir de Porto Rico, Op. 31, is a musical composition for piano by American composer Louis Moreau Gottschalk written from 1857 during a tour in Puerto Rico. Dedicated to the Dutch piano virtuoso and salon music composer Ernest Henry Lubeck, and published in Mainz circa 1860 with the subtitle of Marche des Gibaros, it is based on the Christmas folk song 'Si me dan pasteles, denmelos calientes', performed by local peasants known as J�baros.

The piece makes use of Latin-American and Afro-American melodies and rhythms almost fifty years before early ragtime and jazz would popularize its use.Souvenir de Porto Rico was written in the last trimester of 1857, when of Gottschalk's stay at the sugar plantation of English-born Mr. Cornelius Cartwright, in Plazuela. At the time, Gottschalk was on vacation with singer Adelina Patti and her father. He would decide not to leave Puerto Rico, but instead remain there for weeks. During this period he composed a number of additional pieces after the local musical styles.Gottschalk would say about the setting where he composed the piece: "[I was] perched upon the edge of a crater, [and] my cabin overlooked the whole country. Every evening I moved my piano out upon the terrace, and played for myself alone, everything that the scene opened up before me inspired. It was there that I composed 'Marche des Gibaros.'.
