The final piece of the soundtrack was the track that struck me the most when first listening to the Celeste OST. It is poignant, thoughtful, and harmonically dense. I sought to honor that sort of thoughtful nature with an original section toward the middle with mixed meter resembling the music of Debussy. Published by GGLS Publishing (A0.1110548). This arrangement of the African-American spiritual, Were You There, takes us through the crucifixion of Jesus, his entombment and resurrection. After the plaintive introduction, the first verse is a modified arrangement of the standard hymn and asks Were you there when they crucified my Lord? Verse 2 begins with a little hope that quickly turns to disbelief at watching nails being driven into the Christ: Were you there when they nailed him to a tree?. The left hand simulates the hammer and slowly, slowly, Jesus dies. The key of the third verse is lower than the first two, minor and dissonant and symbolic of Christ being lowered into a tomb. Were you there when they laid him in the tomb? The opening motif returns now, full of quiet despair but gradually evolves into light shining from the tomb and bringing forth hope. Finally, the last verse Were you there when he rose up from the grave? is in an entirely new key from the first three verses and moves with more excitement. Joy builds and the left hand never stays down for long, constantly rising again and again as Christ is raised from the dead in triumph. We conclude with a softening and slowly into contented joy, secure in our faith and knowledge of rebirth.

Several of the eight selections are free-form and improvisational, revealing some of Liz Story’s influence on his music. Some of Isadar’s earlier recordings have very dark, moody sections, but this one stays fairly upbeat and optimistic without being ear candy. The music is complex enough to sink your teeth into, and yet is accessible enough to enjoy as a backdrop to a quiet dinner or an evening with a good book. Joyful Running begins the journey with an exuberant and uplifting piece that reminds me a little of some of Spencer Brewer’s bouncier compositions. Fountain of Life is a beautiful piece with a water-like flow that never stops in its 10 1/2 minutes. I listened to this CD several times without realizing that this song was that long. It flows and meanders so effortlessly that it seemed no longer than the other seven selections, most of which are between four and five minutes in length. Unstructured and free, this is one of my favorite tracks. I also really like the title track, which is even more abstract and unstructured. The tone is of searching and moving forward. End of the Line is my favorite on this album. Very introspective and contemplative, this seems to be a very personal piece. It is the most somber track, but one still senses hope despite the ending of something dear and important. Or maybe it’s simply the end of the journey and the dread of returning to real life - I feel this way on the last day of my vacations! It is a wonderful and moving closing to an excellent album. The companion songbook is expertly transcribed and engraved by David Shenton of New York Music Publishing. The layout of the music is clear and uncluttered, and the notation includes pedal markings and dynamics that allow the pianist to express the music as closely as possible to how Isadar played it on the recording. A few of the pieces are quite long and require a more advanced pianist who is able to express the nuances that keep the recording so interesting, but several of the pieces are well within the capabilities of upper intermediate players. Some of the rhythms are a little bit tricky, but the majority of the left hand parts are running eighth notes, which make it easier. None of the key signatures are difficult, and none of the chords have a reach of more than an octave, making this music very playable for smaller hands. My favorite pieces to play in this book are Joyful Running, Voice of God (Thanksgiving), Smoke Signals, and End of the Line. This colorful and harmonically rich composition has been well-received by many audiences around the word. It was composed for Michael Tsalka, who enjoys playing early keyboards, and for that reason the quiet finger techniques of 18th-century keyboard music was its starting point. So unlike many etudes, the point here is not the development of difficult modern piano technique, but the parameters of harmony, rhythm and phrasing instead. In particular, the clear phrasing of contrasting and overlapping note groups is of special importance. It may sound more subtle and less flashy than a typical etude, but it can actually present a real challenge. My hope is that if one listens carefully, either as player or audience member, the various metric, harmonic and phrasing ambiguities contained in the steady gentle flow of eighth-notes will become a delightful etude for the musical mind. (duration ca. 4 minutes)

Published by Niska Music Publishing (A0.950935). I don’t recall when I first heard this hymn, but it has long been one of my favorites. One of my most powerful memories is singing it graveside when my Uncle John passed away from cancer at a fairly young age. My brother, Kurt, his wife, Lorie, and I sang an arrangement I had written for the service. It came as no surprise to me that it was one of the first hymns that I chose to arrange for piano solo. The melody moves from a fairly straightforward statement in the left hand for the first verse to the right hand in the second verse where it is adorned by a swirling pattern of sixteenth notes. The melody returns to the left hand for the last verse where it takes on a slightly different feel before the prelude returns to the opening material to finish with the same serenity with which it began.
