Published by Liz Nedela (A0.1363503). Puppetry is an ancient art form in Thailand (formerly, Siam), and there are several types of puppetry. Traditional hun lek puppetry is the type represented in this piece. The large puppets require three people (master puppeteers) to work the puppets and dance in unison on stage. Â The puppet shows are accompanied by specific music and narration that tell the story. Â The puppets are designed from an ancient art form: Kohn, and are extremely intricate. Â The story is of Good Triumphs over Evil and is based on a legend of Ramaikien. Â In playing this piece, follow the score instructions carefully, following phrases and no pedal. Â This is a different type of music than is normally performed on piano, but try to envision the instruments, the actions of the puppets, the movements of the puppeteers, and the style of music. Â There was no piano in ancient Siam, and the music is very unlike any used in traditional Western music. Â See YouTube links printed in the structural notes of the score for further education; the mp3 is from computer notation. Â There is no recording of the performance. Â This piece was written by request of a piano student who wanted to play music from his home country: Thailand. Recorded as a 56-minute improvisation on 12/25/02, the music is thoughtful, somber, and quite elegant. There are actually thirteen pieces on the CD, but they segue into each other, making it difficult to tell where one song ends and another begins. This is very definitely NOT a problem, as the album unfolds naturally and organically, asking questions, looking inward, and expressing shock and grief. However, this is not music about only despair or rage. I also hear hope and determination as well as quiet reverence - the strange mix of emotions we all felt during those dark days. Titles include From Cradle to Coffin, Bravery, Numb, New York Skyline, and Truth. Isadar has a wonderful way of wearing his heart on his musical sleeve, pouring deep emotion and heartfelt expression into his music. The music was recorded in one take, but rather than meandering all over the place, Isadar used recurring themes that make the work cohesive and consistent enough to hold together even after many listens. This is a very strong and passionate work, but it was recorded with a rather quiet voice which allows it to be very comfortable and soothing background music as well as evocative solo piano music for concentrated and focused listening. The Purple Heart Sheet Music Collection is a note-for-note solo piano transcription of Isadar’s 2003 memorial CD by the same name (transcribed by David Shenton). The recording and book are a tribute to those who died in the attacks of 9/11/2001. The music was recorded in one take and although there are thirteen titles, the pieces segue into each other, creating a seamless 56-minute improvisation. The book indicates where the various pieces begin and end, but can also be played as one long piece. Although the theme of the music is very somber and bleak, the music covers the broad range of emotions we all felt during that period - anger, sadness, hope, determination, resolve, fear, grief, etc. Although the recording is an improvisation, Isadar incorporates a recurring theme that holds the work together as a single entity. Some pieces are very slow while others are lively and even fast. All thirteen pieces are in C minor/Eb major, but the variety of moods and tempos keep the music evolving without becoming repetitious. I got inspiration for this piece from Jon Schmidt's Waterfall, although the imagery is very different. Different images that come to mind might include twinkling stars, dancing spotlights shining from a city at night, or fireworks. This piece is one of my favorites to play, as the perpetuum mobile rhythm is very satisfying. The entire thing sounds like constant 8th notes in triple compound meter without deviation until the 2nd to last measure. Enjoy!

This quiet, sparse and beautiful music was composed in memory of the composer’s late wife. Because her ‘English’ name, Sansan, sounds like the number 33 in Mandarin Chinese, the piece is based on the numbers 3, 33 and various multiples of them. The numbers were used to shape all aspects of the music, but in performance the piece still flows simply and naturally. It is technically not difficult for performers, but they do need good ears for color, balance, phrasing and creating a sense of natural open space. There are also places where listening to and coordinating balance and phrasing between competing rhythmic layers needs careful attention. (Performance time ca. 4 minutes, or longer.)

Key: F minor.No, it's not really for three hands; it just feels and (at times) sounds like it. This etude was supposed to be an R&B tune. When I first came up with the melody (1992), I tried to write lyrics. But nothing worked. I then tried to make it a band instrumental, with electric guitar taking the lead. Nah, too corny sounding. But I liked the tune. So I persisted and tried it as a solo piano piece. The thing is this: it retains its provenance as a piece for band because the two hands are basically acting as the band. Nothing unusual about that with regard to solo piano: it's always kind of a band or orchestra. What's different here is the left hand is usually playing both the tune and bass line. The right hand, when it joins the party at measure nine, acts like the backup singer (or maybe the guitar that was supposed to take the lead.) Remember that the bottom staff, as indicated, is always 8vb, except for the last measure. And should you take up the challenge to learn this, it is fatiguing but worth the effort.

This has always been a very visual arrangement for me with a rough narrative. It starts with the trumpets at the end of the world, the sense of quiet expectation. Wind across a field. It drops off into the silence of outer space. The initial theme presented against that impersonal void, knowing that He's out there, somewhere. Some of this is very difficult for me to describe because this is really about the Triune God, the great creative power, the mover in harmony and cooperation with Himself. The second verse is more grand, the love, the sense of story. And then it gets very, very big, in the way that I AM is always in capitals. Who WAS and IS and evermore shall BE! And in my mind that word BE is light, and just explodes against the blackness into a billion sparkles. And we shrink down to the microcosm for a moment, the wonders of His creative power in the tiny worlds, and it fades to the black of space again. Holy, Holy, Holy, though the darkness hide Thee. The Light that we can't see that would outshine all the stars. More beauty, and then we tumble down the waterfall of Living Water from the Throne of God...in Heaven. The golden palaces and the wonder, the unearthliness, the richness of the life. For a moment it's more simple and I'm reminded of an old hymn being sung in a rustic church. Then a vision of the Cosmic Christ from Revelation giving a benediction, and we're plunged into the chorus of Heaven, the new song of the 144,000. (this part sounds really good on an acoustic piano because the sound physically builds on itself) And it ends as it began...
