Piano Solo - Advanced - Digital Download Composed by Isadar. Contemporary Classical, Jazz, Recital, Americana, New Age. Sheet Music Single. 11 pages. Published by Mainya Music Publishing (BMI)
Contains:
"En Face Du Miroir (Facing The Mirror)"
- taken from the Isadar solo piano complete collection, "Red" (also available on SMP)

Sounds like: Keith Jarrett, Bill Evans, Vince Guaraldi, Liz Story, George Winston, early Windham Hill solo piano artists

Transcribed by: David Shenton ( https://www.shentonmusic.com/ ) verbatim to the sound recording

Album & Songbook Review by: Kathy Parsons

Red is pianist/composer Isadar’s genre-defying tenth solo piano album and seventeenth independent release from the past twenty years. It is also the third installment in a trilogy of solo piano albums released in the past year - Reconstructed, a Will Ackerman-produced anthology of some of Isadar’s best piano pieces; O Christmas, Isadar’s second piano Christmas album; and now Red, a bittersweet love-themed album that took seven years to produce and that consists of the first new original solo piano material Isadar has released in more than ten years.

I have been reviewing and thoroughly enjoying Isadar’s releases since his second piano album, 1999’s Active Imagination, which still stands as one of my favorite recordings. Even though I have been a big fan for many years, I was still blown away by Isadar’s live performance in my house concert series in July 2010. The man has magic fingers and an extraordinary piano touch that are perfectly suited to express his imaginative, distinctive, and emotionally powerful music.

Isadar is also a singer/songwriter and an electronic musician who creates the music videos for much of his music, dramatizing the stories that inspired the songs. I will always be partial to Isadar’s piano albums because his voice and vision are unique, incorporating jazz, new age, pop, and classical stylings into a musical language all his own.

Red opens with “Broken Valentine,” a free-flowing expression of heartbreak and the broad range of emotions that go with it, alternating between grief and confusion then shifting to perhaps anger and resignation - a great beginning. The title track conveys the freedom of an improvisation while weaving together a variety of upbeat themes. “The Man Who Broke My Heart” is energetic and in constant swirling motion - also very free and from deep within. “The Stairwell” is darker and much more mysterious, overflowing with Isadar’s intriguing accented rhythms and picturesque compositional style. My favorite track is the almost nine-minute “Letting Go,” a piece that intertwines a series of musical vignettes into a powerful, colorful musical collage. I love the way Isadar seamlessly goes from flowing and smooth to a bouncy jazz style to high drama without missing a beat. Great stuff! “En Face Du Miroir (Facing the Mirror)” is much lighter, with fingers dancing nimbly around the piano keyboard. The album closes with “Blood ... Thicker Than Water,” again a combination of changing themes that could well be a musical family portrait - different personalities working separately and as a unit, bound together by the unseen ties that keep families together through thick and thin.

Isadar has created another piano masterpiece that should be more widely heard than his previous releases due to the success of Reconstructed. I hope so, anyway! Red is available from isadar.com, Amazon, iTunes, and CD Baby. Very highly recommended!

Isadar’s Red: Solo Piano Sheet Music Collection is a note-for-note transcription of all seven pieces from Isadar’s 2013 CD/download release by the same name. The music was transcribed by David Shenton (shentonmusic.com) with clear, concise notation that includes dynamics, pedaling and metronome settings.

Isadar is an amazing pianist with a style all his own, so this isn’t a book that most pianists will be able to just sit down and play. It will take some work and attention to detail to get this music right, but it will be well worth the effort. Having the recording for handy reference would be a big help.

Rhythms are often complex and syncopated, but are usually repeated within each piece, so once you have them, the rest will follow fairly easily. There are only a few chords with a reach of more than an octave and none of the key signatures are terribly difficult. The layout and spacing of the music is excellent, and the paper stock is a bright white 9”x12” format with a stapled binding.

If you enjoy listening to Isadar’s music, I’m sure you will enjoy playing it, too! Piano - intermediate - Digital Download (White Scenery (Winter)). Composed by Peteris Vasks (1946-). This edition: single sheet. Downloadable. Duration 7 minutes. Schott Music - Digital #Q12485. Published by Schott Music - Digital
Peteris Vasks occupies a special position in the circle of Baltic composers. He is not only the most significant and popular composer ever to come out of Latvia. he always speaks to his listeners with a fervent intensity that seems to point to something higher. This higher aspect is without a doubt something that stands above the world of humanity but is also present within each person: divine nature.

"I am deeply rooted in nature, in the nature of the North. It influences all of my music. The nature we know is also quite various. we have four very distinct seasons. The winter is very long, the summer very short and therefore all the more beautiful and longed for. The seasons in between are quite dramatic."

The first of Peteris Vasks's Seasons pieces was not written with the intention of forming a complete cycle. For his friend, Talivaldis Deksnis, he composed in 1980 Balta ainava - White Landscape (Winter), in 1981 Rudens muzika - Autumn Music, and in 1995 the Pavasara muzika - Spring Music. In 2008, Zala ainava - Green Landscape (Summer) came into being, the piece which completed the cycle.

In 2009, as a kind of "encore", Vasks wrote Vasaras vakara muzika - Music for a Summer Evening based on old sketches. this, of all the pieces, is the one most anchored in tradition. Only the two newest pieces - both of which have to do with summer - have a fixed metrical structure. The three earlier works are metrically free, notated without bar lines, which gives them an improvisatory character.

Vasks says of the individual pieces in the cycle: "In Balta ainava everything is white. A new year begins. It is a quiet meditation, a new beginning, with only two themes.

Pavasara muzika. Quasi una Sonata - the most demanding piece in this cycle - is intense, an impressive development. Spring comes slowly, with much drama. It is like a battle, until it is simply there. This multi-faceted piece, with its bird songs, lives from conflicts and dramatic intensification and ends in ecstatic rapture. Zala ainava is based on two themes. Our summer is very brief and offers a respite after the battles. And it is so beautiful! The music reflects joy and contentment. The first theme brings a kind of pure energy. the second is more devoted to tone painting. At the end, a five-note quotation from a well-known Latvian folksong about a drunkard is heard.

Rudens muzika begins pianissimo on a quiet September day, in a peaceful, sunny atmosphere. Now the autumn storms sweep over the land. a gentle sadness settles on the people and on nature, which surrenders its splendor. After a last great storm, the snow comes again as a symbol of purified conclusion and a new beginning. Vasaras vakara muzika takes place at the quiet end of a summer day. The sun sets. Slowness. Memories of previous experiences surface. With the memories' appearance comes an increase in intensity. Towards the end, a kind of folksong is heard: 'We have survived the time of tyranny and retained our identity'. The ending is quiet, everything is asleep."

Christoph Schluren

Translation: John Patrick Thomas and W. Richard RievesPeteris Vasks occupies a special position in the circle of Baltic composers.

Richard Rieves

Piano Solo - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1504747 Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by Thomas Ling. Baroque,Classical,Instructional. Score. 11 pages. Thomas Swee Chin #1080174. Published by Thomas Swee Chin (A0.1504747). Capriccio on the Departure of a Beloved Brother, BWV 992 is an early keyboard work by Johann Sebastian Bach, composed in 1704 when Bach was still a teenager. It is considered one of his few programmatic compositions, telling a specific story through music. The piece was likely written to bid farewell to Bach’s brother, Johann Jacob, who was leaving to serve as an oboist in the military.Structure and Programmatic Elements:The Capriccio is divided into six short movements, each with a descriptive title, narrating the emotional journey of the departure:Arioso: Adagio – A friend tries to dissuade him from leavingA gentle, expressive movement representing a friend’s attempt to persuade Johann Jacob to stay.Andante – They picture the dangers that may befall himThis section evokes the imagined dangers and perils of travel, characterized by ominous, foreboding musical gestures.Adagissimo – A lament of the friendsA sorrowful, slow lament, capturing the grief and sadness of those bidding farewell to the brother.Aria di Postiglione – The postillion’s horn is heardThis movement imitates the sound of a post horn, as if signaling the brother’s imminent departure by coach, a common mode of travel in that period.Fuga all’imitazione della cornetta di postiglioneA lively fugue that continues the imitation of the post horn, showcasing Bach’s contrapuntal skills even at this young age.Aria – The friends’ farewellThe final movement brings the capriccio to a touching close as the friends say their last goodbye.Style and Significance:Musical Innovation: While Bach is typically known for abstract works, this early piece is unique for its use of vivid musical storytelling. Each movement serves a narrative function, making it one of the earliest examples of program music, where the music is designed to evoke specific images or emotions outside of purely musical ideas.Youthful Playfulness: The Capriccio reveals the young Bach’s ability to blend humor, drama, and emotion. It also shows his developing mastery of counterpoint, which would later define his mature works.Historical Context: Bach composed this piece at the beginning of his career, before his major positions in Weimar, Köthen, or Leipzig, making it an important insight into his early stylistic development. This capriccio is an expressive and inventive work that balances emotional depth with technical brilliance. It stands out as a unique, personal piece within Bach’s extensive oeuvre, reflecting both a sense of farewell and a joyful exploration of musical ideas.

Piano and keyboard - Intermediate-Advanced - Digital Download SKU: M0.30603MEB The Melakarta System. Composed by Radhika Iyer. Theory and Reference. E-book and online audio. 101 pages. Mel Bay Publications - Digital Sheet Music #30603MEB. Published by Mel Bay Publications - Digital Sheet Music (M0.30603MEB). ISBN 9781619118232. 8.75x11.75 inches.Elements of Indian Music introduces the Indian melodic system in an accessible manner within the realm of Western music theory. It demonstrates a new archetype in music composition for composers of any genre, as well as composition teachers and anyone interested in ethnomusicology. This book contains a set of 12 etudes for piano and transcriptions for classical guitar. Each etude is about one minute in length and utilizes notes from a particular Indian scale. An intermediate to advanced skill level is required to perform each etude. Practicing and performing these studies is an excellent way to expand one’s musical perspective beyond traditional diatonic scales. Indian music has intrigued the West for a long time, but hasn’t always been accessible because of the absence of a systematic approach to theory and repertoire. Just as the Western harmonic system is well developed, the Indian melodic system is very advanced and equally established. The intermingling of these two worlds can inspire new, exceptional sonic landscapes. Useful literature on the evolution of the Indian melodic system is also included, with notes on how it can be used as a modus operandi by Western musicians who wish to apply Indian scales in Western compositions and improvisations. It constantly amazes me how many outstanding composer/pianists there are out there - especially in relation to the few who are highly (commercially) successful within this broad genre. I would say that Active Imagination definitely belongs near the top of the heap. Isadar’s style is original, and his pianism is excellent. Isadar’s cover of Liz Story’s “Wedding Rain” is wonderful - this is a piece I often work on with my advanced students, and everything about Isadar’s interpretation of the piece seems right without being a carbon-copy of Liz’s recording.

“Feu Follet (the ‘spook’ light’)” has a nice, easy flow with a strong sense of mystery; it also has an unusual rhythm that lightens the mood and adds a bounce. “Uncertainty” is cooler and more aloof, but gorgeous in its flowing introspection - that it ends with a major chord, feels like the soul-searching has had positive results. “Love Chaconne” is the closing track, and is the longest and most abstract piece on the CD. The left hand plays a repeated pattern while the right hand goes off in several different directions (one of the primary characteristics of a “chaconne”). Beautiful in its simplicity, this is the only track that seems to contain an element of pain and sorrow, but never dissolves into melodrama.

Active Imagination is excellent from start to finish and I highly recommend it to anyone who likes solo piano with substance and complexity, but is still accessible, melodic, and rhythmic. The rhythms are interesting and catchy, and the mood in several of the songs is playful and upbeat. This is especially true with the title song, “Throwing the Dice,” “Where the Wild Things Are,” and “Feu Follet (the ‘spook’ light).” “Waiting,” “Love Chaconne,” and “Uncertainty” are slower, more introspective, and a bit moody, making this a sheet music collection that contains a variety of moods and styles. Various circumstances including other recording projects, a segue into the field of video production, and a cross country move from NYC to the west coast and later back again, created delays with the completion of the album. But as they say, “good things come to those who wait.”
One of the most interesting things about this album is the fact that the selections are traditional Christmas songs, yet some were chosen because they are less well known, or “off the beaten path” as Isadar characterizes them. This follows the pattern set by his 1999 Christmas album “In Search For The Meaning Of Christmas,” yet this new CD mines even deeper in its quest for interesting and unusual choices.

The album begins with a track called “Good Christian Men.” Steeped in history, the song dates back to 14th century Germany and its Latin title was originally “In Dulci Jubilo” before it was translated into English in the 1800’s. Isadar’s interpretation creates a lively and festive air that makes a perfect portal to the recording. The high-spirited mood continues on the next song, “Teddy Bears Picnic,” which although not technically a Christmas song, has been interwoven by Isadar with “March Of The Toys” to tie it in with the holidays – a clever arrangement of these intriguing melodies. One of the more well-known carols on the album is “O Christmas Tree” and is sure to have listeners humming along with it’s familiar refrain.

A track entitled “Still” is an innovative rendition of the classic “Still, Still, Still” which Isadar has put his own spin on, or as he jokingly puts it “jazzed up shamelessly.” No such liberties were taken on the classic “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel,” however. This song provides a showcase for Isadar’s accomplished grand piano work, featuring lush left hand arpeggios creating a strong foundation for his more delicate right hand melodies to dance upon – a powerful and moving combination. Another of the less well known, yet equally inspiring tunes is a Puerto Rican carol entitled “Song Of The Wise Men.” It has been said that: “Christmas is, above all, a children’s holiday, and many hymns are addressed to children, reminding them that the real reason for the sugarplums and Christmas trees is the celebration of the birth of the Christ Child.” This theme is well reflected in Isadar’s choice of “O Come Little Children,” based on a carol from the 1800’s.

Among my favorite tracks on the album are the wistful strains of “Greensleeves 2012,” which Isadar interprets with elegance and grandeur and also pays ‘homage’ to Liz Story’s brilliant take on this enduring composition. This is followed by a rendition of “Masters In This Hall,” which can best be described as, well… “masterful.” The song dates back to the sixteenth century, and is another of the less well-known tunes that Isadar has chosen to feature. The album draws to a close with Isadar invoking artistic license on what is perhaps one of the most unique and liberal versions of a classic carol heard here yet. Based on “We Wish You A Merry Christmas,” Isadar characterizes it as “an uninhibited melancholy arrangement.” While I don’t know if “melancholy” is the word I would use to describe it, it does have a pensive quality and is presented more as a nocturne than usual lively carol it is known as. I really liked the interpretation and respect Isadar’s creativity and distinctive rendering of the song.

“O Christmas” is an exceptional holiday collection, not only for Isadar’s elegant grand piano artistry, but as well for the interesting and sometimes unexpected repertoire contained within. Like ornaments on a tree, the songs adorn the album, enhancing its beauty with their diversity, individuality, and timelessness. Given the well-deserved accolades and popularity of Isadar’s distinctive piano style, I’m sure that fans will want to include “O Christmas” in their collection and make it a part of their holiday tradition.Contains:
"Greensleeves 2012"
- taken from the Isadar solo piano collection, "O Christmas" (also available on SMP)

Sounds like: Vince Guaraldi's "A Charlie Brown Christmas," Liz Story's "The Gift," George Winston's "December," legacy Windham Hill solo piano artists, "A Winter's Solstice" compilations.

Note: “Greensleeves 2012” is a revisited and evolved arrangement which like my earlier version, was inspired by – and also pays ‘homage’ to – Liz Story’s brilliant take on this timeless piece.

Transcribed by: David Shenton ( https://www.shentonmusic.com/ ) verbatim to the sound recording

Album review by: Michael Diamond (http://michaeldiamondmusic.com):

Fresh on the heels of his highly acclaimed chart-topping CD, Reconstructed, Isadar gifts us with a sparkling new album of holiday-themed instrumental music for solo piano, entitled “O Christmas.” Given the proximity to his recent release, one might assume that this one was quickly produced, but in reality O Christmas has been 7 years in the making. Piano Solo - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.818284 By Stephen R Dalrymple. By Felix Bartholdy Mendelssohn. Arranged by edited by Stephen R Dalrymple (Dalrymple Designs). Romantic Period. Score. 17 pages. Stephen R Dalrymple #4967141. Published by Stephen R Dalrymple (A0.818284). Songs Without Words: Sweet Remembrance by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy for piano solo (Opus 19:1) (Classical Music for Tablet Series) ♫ Edited for 10 inch tablet by Stephen R Dalrymple ♫ Jakob Ludwig Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy wrote a series of 49 lyrical compositions for piano solo between 1829 and 1845 within the structure of the art song form. These “Songs Without Words†spanned almost all his productive life as a composer (age 20-35 (2 years before his death.)) Mendelssohn discouraged his followers from attempting to find text to fit these pieces. He wanted the melodies to speak for themselves. Only a few of them were titled by Mendelssohn; most of the titles came from publishers of later editions. ♫The Classical Music for Tablet Series offers piano masterworks by classical composers formatted to be read on 10 inch tablets. I use an Amazon Kindle with Mobile Sheets Pro and an Air Turn blue tooth foot pedal to practice and perform piano music. Similar products available to provide other tablets the same functionality. ♫ The pieces in this series have not been arranged, but most have been edited slightly, and have been formatted to fit screen size. For example, in the tablet versions, first and second endings are often removed and the repeated measures and endings written into the music so the performer can avoid having to go back to previous pages. These kinds of section repeats were invented to spare the composer’s time and the cost of extra paper and ink. But with a tablet the cost of paper and ink is irrelevant. ♫ Although there are a lot more page turns with a 10 inch screen compared with letter size pages, the readability of the music (due to the backlighting on the tablet) and the portability of the music (travelling with a small tablet instead of oversized books or portfolios of sheet music) easily makes up for the extra page turns. ♫ Your purchase provides one .pdf file that contains both the tablet edition and the letter size page (printable) version. There are several programs available online that will allow you to separate this .pdf file into 2 .pdf files to make it more useful.

Piano Solo - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.862579 Composed by Michael Bomier. 20th Century,Contemporary,Instructional. Score. 7 pages. Michael Butkus-Bomier #436299. Published by Michael Butkus-Bomier (A0.862579). 2015 Piano Contest This final movement is based on a concept in atonal music called The Parsimony of Voice-leading. It uses the idea that there can be only one voice or chord-tone that shifts from one iteration or segment to the next. Thus this piece used small variations on simple five-finger positions that are juxtaposed against each other, with the variations being only one note from one to the next within s section, that section to be followed by another set of similar motions, but on a different keyboard shape. The melody is derived from the content of the five-note group below it, often as dyads with an added 1/2 step. Duration about 3 mins. Lots of motion and crunch, like a good musical snack! MP3 MIDI audio. Advanced level at tempo, but Intermediate at a slower pace. MBB.

Piano Solo - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1028362 Composed by Nina Smeets. Children,Concert,Contemporary,Film/TV,Praise & Worship. Score. 11 pages. Hart vol Muziek #3483939. Published by Hart vol Muziek (A0.1028362). At the age of three, Nina suffered a big accident. After being for a long time in a coma, the doctors lost all hope. Miraculously she got conscious after repetitively listening to the 12th piano concerto from Mozart, played by her mother. As a child, Nina was always very attracted to music. Her dream was to become one day a pianist. One day Nina's fiancé, Gabriel Ferraz started to philosophize about the innovation within classical music. Gabriel motivates and inspires Nina to start writing music. In 2013 Nina plays the piano concerto of Gershwin in Switzerland with orchestra. After playing the concerto, she decides to play one of her own pieces as an encore. After a very positive feedback about her music, she starts playing other pieces written by herself on other concerts. At long last, Nina and Gabriel start the project of writing Project Reborn. In 2016 Nina's music from Project Reborn is nominated an award by the Akademia Music Award in the USA. 'Project Reborn' wins the Akademia Music Awards.Nina Smeets may caress the keys with unrivaled dexterity, but it's her underlying compositional instincts that leave us breathless with appreciation for 'Project Reborn'. by Akademia Music Awards For more information about Nina Smeets, click on the link below: https://www.facebook.com/smeetsnina/ For the complete book, click on the link below: https://www.facebook.com/pg/smeetsnina/shop/?ref=page_internal
