Debussy Inconnu: Album of works for the piano by Claude Debussy completed by Robert Orledge, Vol. 1

Piano Solo - Advanced Intermediate - Digital Download Composed by Claude Debussy/Robert Orledge. 20th Century, Impressionistic, Repertoire, Recital. Score. 71 pages. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing
Contains A Night in the House of Usher Un Jour affreux avec Le Diable dans le beffroi, Les accords de septième regrettent!!!, Petite Valse,Fêtes galantes, and Prélude à ‘L’Histoire de Tristan’

From Robert Orledge's notes:

My interest in the wonderful music of Claude Debussy began in the 1980s when I researched and published a book with Cambridge University Press entitled Debussy and the Theatre. During the course of my studies in Paris, I was amazed to discover that Debussy planned over 50 theatrical works but only finished two of these entirely by himself (the opera Pelléas et Mélisande in 1893–1902 and the ballet Jeux for Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes in 1912–13). Of the rest, many were never started musically (like Siddartha and Orphée-roi with the Oriental scholar Victor Segalen, 1907); some had a few tantalising sketches (like the Edgar Allan Poe opera Le Diable dans le beffroi, 1902–03); some were half-finished (like his other Poe opera La Chute de la Maison Usher, 1908–17); while others were musically complete but had their orchestrations completed by other composers (like Khamma, by Charles Koechlin, 1912–13; or Le Martyre de Saint Sébastien and La Boîte à joujoux by his ‘angel of corrections’ [‘l’ange des Corrections’] André Caplet in 1911 and 1919 respectively).

For it has to be admitted that what some scholars call Debussy’s ‘compulsive achievement’ could equally well be viewed as laziness, especially as far as the minute detail required for calligraphing his orchestral scores was concerned. It was as if creating the music itself was of greater importance than controlling its final sound, even if Debussy was an imaginative orchestrator when he found the time and energy to do it. It also seems true that Debussy also preferred inventing ideas to turning them into complete pieces. However, despite the lack of detail in many of his sketches (missing clefs, key signatures, dynamics, phrasing, etc.) the notes themselves are surprisingly accurate, whether or not they can be compared with a later draft. Thus, a large number of sketches exist for his Chinese ballet No-ja-li ou Le Palais du Silence and it is not too difficult to see which parts of Georges de Feure’s 1913 scenario (see below) inspired which ideas. But Debussy hardly made any attempt to join them together after the first few bars.

It was usually up to his publisher, Jacques Durand, to find solutions when Debussy risked a breach of contract. Debussy was supposed to supervise the orchestrations completed by others, but this supervision was usually very light and restricted to quiet, sensitive moments in which problems were easier to spot. Far from jealously guarding every one of his created notes, as Ravel did, Debussy once even went as far as to ask Koechlin to ‘write a ballet for him that he would sign’ on 26 March 1914 when he was hard-pressed to fulfil his lucrative contract for No-ja-li with André Charlot at the Alhambra Theatre in London. In the end, Debussy (through Durand) sent Charlot the symphonic suite Printemps instead, whose orchestration had been completed by Henri Busser in the Spring of 1912.

So, when I was offered early retirement as Professor of Music at Liverpool University in 2004, I seized the opportunity it would give me to spend time trying to reconstruct some of Debussy’s lost potential masterpieces from his existing sketches and drafts—then orchestrating them in Debussy’s style when this was appropriate. I had begun this mission in 2001 with the most promising project, the missing parts of Scene 2 of La Chute de la Maison Usher and the sheer joy it gave me at every stage persuaded me to tackle other projects, especially when Debussy experts were unable to identify exactly where I took over from Debussy (and vice versa) in Usher.Contains A Night in the House of Usher Un Jour affreux avec Le Diable dans le beffroi, Les accords de septième regrettent!!!, Petite Valse,Fêtes galantes, and Prélude à ‘L’Histoire de Tristan’

From Robert Orledge's notes:

My interest in the wonderful music of Claude Debussy began in the 1980s when I researched and published a book with Cambridge University Press entitled Debussy and the Theatre.

I had begun this mission in 2001 with the most promising project, the missing parts of Scene 2 of La Chute de la Maison Usher and the sheer joy it gave me at every stage persuaded me to tackle other projects, especially when Debussy experts were unable to identify exactly where I took over from Debussy (and vice versa) in Usher.Contains Le Roi Lear: Prélude,Première Fanfare, and La Mort de Cordélia,Toomai des éléphants, Rodrigue et Chimène: Prélude à l’acte 1p. This piece begins with the same note played an octave apart. This is meant to represent two hearts that long to be together but are separated by things such as distance, time, fear, and pride. Loneliness can sink its claws into you, it can eat away at you till you feel empty and hopeless. It is better to be together. Alone, you have only yourself for comfort and encouragement and in all honesty, our attempts at this can be rather pathetic sometimes. Together you can lift each other up when you fall, you can laugh together, you can cry together, you can dance together, you can mourn together, you can fight together, you can love together. It is better to be together.

It is from a series of 13 jazz-style piano solos for young players - Jazzamatazz - which covers a variety of styles and feels from swing to jazz waltzes to the blues.

Piano Solo - Digital Download SKU: A0.1087984 Composed by Eamon Mukhopadhyay. Contemporary. Score. 31 pages. Eamon Mukhopadhyay #692177. Published by Eamon Mukhopadhyay (A0.1087984). These three pieces are to mimic studies of voicing and touch through lyrical forms. Each specific BPM marking in the tempo is intentionally preceded with ossia rather than ca.. This is to emphasize complete tempo freedom for the performer. The BPM markings are simply given as an initial baseline, showing the general tempo that the composer would perform these pieces at. Neither of the three pieces finish with a triad. Instead, they end with some form of extended harmony, whether it be through a chord or arpeggio. Neither the specific meaning of the piece nor the method to play the piece is included in the piece descriptions following this sentence, as those choices are specific to the performer. Nocturne in A Major (Op. 1 No. 1) uses both contemporary and traditional harmonic concepts, with add9 chords and extended harmonies integrating further color into the piece. Much material of Winter Landscapes in E-Flat Minor (Op. 1 No. 2) is built upon a simple four-note motif (in regards to scale degrees, the motif follows the pattern of 1-7-2-1). To note - this piece never resolves to the traditional E-Flat minor triad. Lastly, Tribute in D major (Op. 1 No. 3), similar to the other two pieces (of the Op. 1 set), uses multiple forms of extended harmonies through chords and arpeggios, such as add9 and dominant thirteenth harmony.

Piano Solo - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1141251 By Filipe Bernardo. By Filipe Bernardo. Classical. Score. 9 pages. Filipe Bernardo #741562. Published by Filipe Bernardo (A0.1141251). This Toccata is part of the NUMES collection, consisting of 7 works about 15 Hellenic deities. Toccata: Thea Glaukopis Athena. The NUMES collection contains: * Sonatina * Sonata * Toccata * Intermezzo * Postlude * Quatro Cânticos sem Palavras [Four Canticles without Words] * Fantasia. The scores are elegantly and accurately typed. The notation, from the positioning of the notes, passing through the direction of the stems, and reaching legatos that do not cross staves and barlines, seeks to be clear and intuitive. The form is evidenced by the bar numbering placed at the beginning of the main phrases. And the use of double barlines is restricted to section changes, not tonal changes, as in older notations. Dynamics are not structuring and therefore are not prefixed. And each score is preceded by an epigraph that situates the general character of the music, whose tempo is indicated by the name of the Divinity.

Piano Solo - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1216480 By Amy Louise Lewis. By Amy Louise Lewis. Christian,Classical,Contemporary,Religious,Spiritual. Score. 1 pages. Amy Lewis #813057. Published by Amy Lewis (A0.1216480). This is an enigmatic and rhapsodic piece for solo piano that is composed in Whole Tone C mode and is based on the Book of Revelation Chapter 8 Verses 1-5 in the New Testament Bible. Bar 1-18 is based on verses 1-3 and is sharp, spacey and minimal - the sound of silence and of the angels. The emphasis is the sound between the notes.Verse 4 states: 'And the smoke of the incense, which came with the prayers of the Saints, ascended up before God out of the angel's hand.' This section changes tone and phrase. There is a beautiful ascending up the keyboard, which is delecate but with hesitance. It is the light before the darkness; the potential energy before the explosion; the calm before the storm. There must be tension.Verse 5 states: 'And the angel took the censer, and filled it with fire of the altar and cast it into the Earth, and there were voices, and thunderings, and lightnings, and an earthquake.'This section therefore is rather more dramatic, with a contrast of high and low pitched notes and chords. The final bars of the piece are suspension - sharp and repetative chords and ending on one sharp note - what happens next? The pianist should pedal freely throughout the piece and add their own dramatic touch to this very illistrative score.

Piano Solo - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1033340 Composed by Neil Awasthi. Contemporary. Score. 6 pages. Neil Awasthi #6352703. Published by Neil Awasthi (A0.1033340). The chase is afoot! A rather large cat attempts to hunt a wily mouse. The mouse tries to escape the cat’s clutches. Who succeeds? This piece’s ternary form follows the chase between a cat and mouse. Section A is lively and fast-paced because the cat is on the hunt for the mouse. Since this piece is written from the mouse’s perspective, C-sharp minor conveys the mouse’s fright and fear. The time signature is 4/4 to allow for 16th notes, which denote running steps. The theme in m.19 repeats several times throughout Section A to signify the large cat’s ominous stalking. Tenutos and staccatos punctuate the cat’s heavy steps. In m.14-15, the chromatic scale represents the cat’s momentum. The constantly changing dynamics showcase the various movements and emotions in a chase. Specifically, in m.28-31, the dynamic changes to piano and pedal is employed to signify the mouse’s despair. Section B stands alone, representing the mouse’s successful escape from the cat. The section’s key signature D-flat major is light and happy. A time signature of 6/8 swings, furthering the carefree mood of the mouse. The beginning of Section B repeats to emphasize the mouse’s joyous escape. However, at the end of the section, the cat returns. In m.61-68, varying speeds and descriptors contrast the movements of the cat and mouse. In m.68, the cat’s theme is an octave lower to draw attention to the cat’s threatening, heavy steps. In m.70-71, the notes accelerate to show that the mouse begins to run again. Section A’s refrain recaps the cat chasing the mouse. In m.89-100, the end, tells the mouse’s fate. The climatic ending is highlighted by the speeding tempo. The treble-clef notes are an octave higher to build excitement. In m.95-96, notes descend 4 octaves to indicate the mouse’s ultimate demise. The piece ends with grand chords to mark the mouse’s death.

Another Day Another Dollar is an Advanced Intermediate Blues piano solo around 2 minutes long, in the key of C; with lots of 16th notes, and 16th note triplets nested in 8th note triplets. Don’t be intimidated by all the notes, they fit nicely within hand positions. I have found although there is a lot of EASY material for boogie learners, and at the other end of the spectrum, complicated transcriptions, I needed to write intermediate pieces for my students to fill the material gap. Published by John Burkett (A0.1352800). My Variations on the hymn tune Gordon (My Jesus, I Love Thee) are intended for church pianists looking for interesting arrangements of hymns familiar to their congregations. The four variations in this set display increasing rhythmic complexity as one plays them from beginning to end, ranging from continuous streams of eighth notes to eighth-note triplets to sixteenths. The first, and simplest, variation can be played alone. Variations 2-4 are written as a continuous group, though they too can be played individually if desired, by adding a conclusive tonic note in the bass. For the most part the pitches of the hymn tune are presented without ornamentation, though there are occasional exceptions. I have provided a full-length recording to aid the prospective buyer in the decision-making process. I encourage you to search the Sheet Music Plus or the Sheet Music Direct website for other hymn arrangements of mine, some for organ and others for piano.

Piano Solo - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1277927 Composed by Terry Gilkyson. Arranged by Thomas Gunther. Comedy,Film/TV,Jazz. Score. 2 pages. Thomas Gunther Music Productions #869433. Published by Thomas Gunther Music Productions (A0.1277927). About the arrangement(See also (PopJazzKeys.com/The-Bare-Necessities)This is a relatively easy to play solo piano jazz arrangement of THE BAR NECESSITIES. The song is a traditional jazz tune made famous in the Walt Disney movie THE JUNGLE BOOK. The video and audio recording I posted here features me playing the short version of my arrangement. When played as written (with all the repeats) it is almost 4 minutes long. What's cool about this arrangement is that you can easily add a bass player and even an entire rhythm section while playing it the same way as you would in a solo performance!Who this arrangement is best suited forI think everyone who likes the song except perhaps advanced jazz pianists will have fun learning and playing this arrangement. I arranged this piece originally with my younger piano students in mind, who have smaller hands than most adults. That’s why there are no large intervals or big jumps in the left hand. Something generally found in ragtime and early jazz piano styles. This means that my arrangement is perfectly suited for pianists with smaller hands. Of course pianists with large hands (like myself) can play it too (ha-ha!).I think it is also a great piece for pianists who want to familiarize themselves with playing jazz piano. And since I wrote out every note and articulation, they can play along with the recording and hopefully pick up the traditional jazz feel along the way.Although the arrangement is not very difficult, it poses several challenges for the inexperienced pianist, as explained later. How I arranged itAs I already explained above, there are no large intervals or big jumps in the left hand to be found. Instead, I focused more on polyphonic arranging techniques, in both hands. I also used guide tones and inversions. The left hand imitates the accompaniment style of a traditional jazz guitar or banjo player with added half time bass figures that are typically played by a tuba or upright bass an octave lower. Tips for how to learn this arrangementWhen I teach this song to my students I strongly recommend to them to listen to the original version and my recording a lot, rather than explaining to them how swinging eighth notes and jazz articulation work. By the way, there are a few bars where you hear me playing straight eighths on the recording (as indicated in the sheet music). I decided to add articulations so that pianists who have not a lot of experience with playing jazz will find it easier to play it with the appropriate “touchâ€. It's a good idea to check those out.Should you not be familiar with playing polyphonic passages with one hand, you might want to practice very slowly at first and attempt to balance the different voices appropriately. Listening to the recording will also help with discovering dynamic possibilities. I didn’t want to clutter up the sheet music with dynamic markings, so listening to the recording is really the only way to figure out what dynamics I had in mind.

Healing Hearts 3
Louis Landon
2016 / Landon Creative, Inc.
63 minutes
Review by Kathy Parsons
Louis Landon’s Healing Hearts 3 is the third in a series of solo piano albums that are comprised of improvisations that were created while clients were in session at his Healing Piano of Sedona (AZ). These sixty-minute healing and music sessions consist of forty minutes of mentoring and twenty minutes of music that includes personalized music for the client’s own use. Landon created Healing Piano of Sedona several years ago to help people live life joyously, passionately, and stress- and disease-free. Landon is a Steinway Artist who has been a life-long musician. Healing Hearts 3 is his twenty-first album and fourteenth solo piano collection. Each of the thirteen pieces on the album was inspired by a different “soul journey,” so the music is quite varied although it maintains a very calming and peaceful vibe throughout.

It is interesting to note that Healing Hearts 3 has the closest to the ideal sound Landon has been looking for on his recordings. He attributes that achievement to the mastering and editing expertise of Joe Bongiorno of Piano Haven Studio, also in Sedona. Landon has been trying to get the sound of a classical concert hall in his Peace Palace studio recordings and this album definitely has that sound, which is exceptionally beautiful - clear, warm and resonant.

Healing Hearts 3 begins with “Standing In the Light,” a softly flowing piece with a poignant melody that gently soothes the heart - a favorite. “Heart Song” is hushed, intimate and obviously very personal. “Triumph of the Soul” starts out in the deep bass of the piano - very dark and lost. As the piece evolves, it gradually lightens as it moves up the piano keyboard, ending in a very positive place. I’ve often said that the piano is the best instrument to express the sound and feeling of rain and “Night Rain” proves that point again. More energetic than most of the other tracks, the notes flow freely: sometimes smoothly and evenly, sometimes more percussive like big fat raindrops - love it! “Tears” is heartbreak set to music, although tears are so often a big part of the healing process. Such deep emotion is expressed in this piece! Landon wisely follows sadness with “Happy Man,” a lively slice of pianistic sunshine. “Phoenix Rising” begins in the deep bass of the piano, obviously signifying a very dark place or crisis. Over the course of the composition, there is turmoil and pain, but then Landon gradually moves the piece into the upper end of the piano to a much lighter and more peaceful place - a stunning piece! “Healing Time” is gently uplifting and so soothing and serene that I can actually feel it melting away tension - another favorite. “Music Runs Through Me” flows quickly like a stream with sparkles of sunlight dancing happily on its surface. “Balance” returns to a calm stillness that comes when things/life are in balance. Slow, lyrical and very peaceful, it’s the perfect closing for another great album from Louis Landon!

I have thoroughly enjoyed all three Healing Hearts albums, but I think #3 is my favorite. Piano Solo - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.499760 Composed by S. G. Potts. 20th Century,Contemporary,Romantic Period,Standards. Score. 18 pages. S. G. Potts #3512109. Published by S. G. Potts (A0.499760). The Raymond Variations for Piano (Set 1), received its world premiere on 2nd December 2015 at the 1901 Arts Club London, performed by Lorraine Womack-Banning as part of a memorial tribute concert to her late husband Raymond Banning (former professor of pianoforte at Trinity College London). The Variations are based on the three Andantino themes which form a central part of the ‘Raymond Overture’ written in 1851 by French composer Ambroise Thomas: 1811-1896. There are nine piano variations in total; these include a mix of both full and short partial variations (including a very short declamatory two chord introductory variation). The variations are not numbered or set-apart in a conventional manner, rather they form part of a continuous whole, and are separated only by bridge passages and/or cadence points; they last a little under eight minutes in duration, and strongly exploit the passionate elements of Thomas’s themes. They have been written for the most part in an accessible tonal style (with a passing nod to Messrs. Beethoven and J.S. Bach) and are based predominately in the home key of D minor, but they do also take advantage of many 20th and 21st century harmonic techniques where deemed appropriate: e.g. added note chords; cluster chords; percussive chords, and melodic deflection. In particular, the interval of the major 7th and its enharmonic equivalent(s) (the most distinctive interval in the main andantino theme from the overture) is heard in various different guises throughout the variations: this includes its inversion the minor 2nd which has a very distinctive sharp dissonant quality. Much play is made of these intervals – to somewhat humorous effect in variation 8 (the joker in the pack) heard some three quarters into the set, here the dissonant interval is pounded out double forte before hastily leading into some boisterous cluster harmonic instability; then quietly begins variation 9 which duly brings the set to a close. Look out for the sting in the tail!

Baroque,Chamber,Classical,Medieval,Traditional. Score. 41 pages. Müller Publishing company #928047. Published by Müller Publishing company (A0.1342549). Selection of every Minuets From Notebook for Anna Magdalena BachI am pleased to present you all with a very special opportunity to acquire a treasure from Johann Sebastian Bach's musical works. It is the anthology Selection of Every Minuets from Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach, the result of my remarkable research and editing work. This publication brings together the minuets written for harpsichord or clavichord contained in Bach's original handwritten notebooks dated from 1722 and 1725. These pieces were created by Bach as musical gifts for his wife Anna Magdalena, likely to be enjoyed during her domestic studies of the harpsichord or clavichord.I myself have diligently carried out the careful work of researching, transcribing and editing this important repertoire, faithfully preserving the notation and style of the era. In this way, musicians and scholars will be able to enjoy the works in their original form, without any adaptations. We now have in a single, easily legible edition, all pieces organized with great care in the same sequence as in the manuscripts.Whether for the study of the master's style or simply for enjoyment, this anthology will preserve under my curation Bach's most intimate creations in a practical and accessible way.I am pleased to announce that in addition to the complete anthology, individual score editions from the collection are also available from our profile on the Müller Publishing company website. I guarantee that students and professors alike will greatly value the content's wealth of teachings.I warmly invite you all to acquire your copy - a gift to yourself and to music history. It will be an investment that will enhance any collection.I hope to count on your support for this endeavor. I will be grateful for any feedback or suggestions to further improve this project.

The challenge in this piano song for the early beginner is keeping control in the left hand with the continual eighth notes up to bar 12. Also keeping the notes aligned is tricky, especially in bars 7 and 8 with the ties in the right hand. You can practice them first without the ties until you master the rhythm, then put them back on. Are We There Yet Blues is an Advanced Intermediate Blues piano solo, 1 minute and 45 seconds long, in the key of C; with 16th notes, and 16th note triplets nested in 8th note triplets. Don’t be intimidated by all the notes, they fit nicely within hand positions. I have found although there is a lot of EASY material for boogie learners, and at the other end of the spectrum, complicated transcriptions, I needed to write intermediate pieces for my students to fill the material gap. Piano Solo - Early Intermediate - Digital Download Composed by Kathi Kerr. Method, Repertoire, Classroom, General Instructional, Technique Training. Individual Part. 112 pages. Published by Melody Music Publishers
Drill & Excel On the Piano Book 3 is a 145-page book for the early intermediate student. This includes everything a student will need for their lesson and learning the skill and concepts of playing the piano. It starts with 2 assignment pages for the week’s assignments. Followed by note pages for the student or the instructor to make. The first chapter starts with a recap for books 1 and 2, so no important foundational steps are missed if the intermediate student starts with this book. Then starting with chapter 2, Drill & Excel On the Piano Book 3 introduces new rhythms, the 16th notes and rests, and triplets. The exercises get more challenging for the intermediate student, with lots of special exercises for skills needed. Special exercises include dynamic training, finger independence, finger pedaling, and more. For the scales, playing them in multiple octaves are introduced, along with the 2 new scales, A and F. What’s new in Drill & Excel On the Piano book 3 is TONS of new theory! Diatonic intervals were introduced in the 3rd chapter of book 2, so chromatic (altered) intervals are introduced in the 2nd chapter, along with triads and triad numbers in the 3rd chapter. It doesn’t stop there; it also includes plenty of assignment worksheets, so the student has a repetitive written assignment for deeper learning! And the best part, 60 original songs beautifully written to teach what is taught in each chapter. Songs are melodic and fun to play, introducing a new style of music with each song. The author gives commentary for each song. Most method books merely offer songs with little information, but the “Drill & Excel On the Piano” book series offers not only plenty of songs, but everything the student needs for all concepts, information, and skill needed to take the early intermediate student to the next level.Drill & Excel On the Piano Book 3 is a 145-page book for the early intermediate student.
