I recorded it on harpsichord, but it also works great on a piano.The theme is stated plainly.The first variation adds running eighth notes in the right hand.The second variations switches the eighth notes to the left hand, and changes the harmony a bit.The third variation adds triplets in the right hand, while the left hand plays the same pattern over and over, a technique known as a ground bass. In the recording, I play it using the lute stop.The fourth variation is a sarabande, a slow dance in triple meter with frequent emphasis on the second beat of the measure.The fifth and final variation states the melody in octaves in the left hand, while the right hand goes crazy with sixteenth notes. The first eight measures of the right hand are inverted and modified to form the second eight measures.I had a lot of fun writing this. I hope you have as much fun playing it.

One of the more technically demanding preludes in this set, it is a definite workout for the right hand as it is nonstop triplets from beginning to end. Not only must the wrist remain loose, but the melody is contained in the right hand amidst the steady torrent of sixteenth note triplets. There is also a wonderful two measure hemiola figure where the meter seems to shift temporarily before returning to the established meter. The exuberance and excitement of the good news of Christ’s birth is the driving force behind this arrangement. Symphonic in its conception, the pianist needs to keep that in mind as they bring all the forces of the orchestra to bear. There are instances of brass chords, swirling string lines, singing woodwinds and thundering timpani, sometimes happening all at the same time. A tour de force and an excellent concert finale!

Published by Michael Butkus-Bomier (A0.862573). 2015 Piano Contest The final movement of this Sonata has a brief introduction, then takes off in a non-stop flurry of arpeggiated, symmetrical, topographically-mirrored chords in contrary motion. The model here is the final Presto from Chopin's Sonata in Bb minor. The effect is a kind of rapid Minimalism, but with more rapid contrasts of colour than typical modern Minimalist piano. The duration is a bit over four minutes. It is best NOT to use the pedal at ALL, as the chords change so rapidly that there is no real need: the continuity will be there! Not a fast version of the 2nd slow movement, but a unique set of chords that provide min-min, maj-maj, aug-aug contrasts and combinations. MP3 MIDI audio. Advanced level at tempo, could be played considerably slower, for a different but manageable effect. MBB.

A piece in C minor for fortepiano, entirely based on five sketches by Beethoven: Biam. 349b (1802-1803), Biam. 280 (c. 1800), Biam. 349a (1802-1803), Biam. 467 (1808), and Biam. 472 (1808). Its interest lies in the combination and adjustment of the respective fragments, to result in a fluent piece in late Classical style. The sketches were expanded to exploit a bit their passing ideas (the double bars in the score indicate the end of the original material). A mysterious introduction in C minor (Largo, Biam. 349b) is continued by modulations reminding of the Introduzione to the Finale of Beethoven’s Op. 53 and linking it to the vivacious central section, with triplets (first, Allegro assai, in B major as a possible reading of Biam. 280, which was originally written down without a key signature). This is continued by a section in A major (Biam. 349a) and then in D minor, in triple time (Biam. 467). After a sudden stop, the mysterious introduction in C minor returns abbreviated, ending discretely in C major. Composed for the contest at the Centro Ricerche Musicali (C.R.M.) LVBEETHOVEN Italy. This composition is a piano piece written in A major in the common time signature 4/4. The story behind ‘Roadtrip on a Motorway’ is from a personal experience of travelling to Galway from Dundalk to go to Pink Training, a national and life-changing weekend. The original phrase represents the rising hope of what the weekend could become and how exciting it is to be outside of college. This is quickly interrupted as during the journey the car breaks down on the motorway one hour away from Galway city. This is represented by fast, irregular rhythms with counterpoint to represent the disorientation, panic and fear from not knowing where we are or how we are going to get to Galway on time. The return of the original motif symbolises hope coming back to us as a woman stopped on the motorway and offered to drive us to Galway. A sense of panic and disorientation returns in the music as we begin to become stressed about whether we will meet the deadline for registration. The song finally resolves to the original theme, but developed as a nod to the journey that we had while we finally make it to registration on time.

Bean (A0.1184873). 9 pages, late intermediate. early advanced level; Starts in G minor with a mysterious opening that prevents the audience from knowing what piece is about to be played. The famous theme enters in measure 13 and ends with a dramatic climb on the dominant arpeggio. The theme is developed and morphs into a quote from Joy to the World in the key of D, followed by a quote from It Came Upon a Midnight Clear in a dream like manner, in the key of E major. This section ends with bringing back part of the main theme in the key of E minor. From there the piece modulates to the key of Eb minor to Eb major and finally back to G minor with a reprise of many of the earlier themes. The end is a surprise with a quote once again from Joy to the World in a Maestoso fashion. Definitely a show-stopper short of piece. Great for recitals!

CeÌsar Franck’s vocal work has become one of the most popular sacred songs of all time. The gentle lyricism of its melody and supportive piano accompaniment (originally written for the church organ), along with its original lyrics by St. Thomas Aquinas, have propelled this work to become universally beloved. It was included in Franck’s Mass for Three Voices in 1860 (though somewhat incomplete at the time), but found its own identity many years later after it had finally been completed.
