This is an Elementary level piano arrangement with Alpha Notes of the very popular song from Encato, What Else Can I Do? from a SMP top selling arranger, Joan Bujacich. The arrangement plays hands together on down beats in single notes. Ms. Bujacich simplified the rhythmic reading to eighth notes, keeping only a few select syncopated rhythms. The arrangement is notated using Alpha Notes. Lyrics are also noted. It has been tested out by pedagogue Joan Bujacich's Elementary students and it played well. Ms. Bujacich has also arranged this song for Junior Level and has numerous versions of We Don’t Talk About Bruno and Surface Pressure, also from Encanto, available from SMP. The right hand chordal pattern, being somewhat repetitive, represents the sound of a small mountain stream gently descending through a shadowed forest. The melodic stylings of the left hand, increasing in lyrical complexity, represents the mysteries found in the forest depths. It is a piece of only moderate difficulty in its structure but the opportunity for a very advanced technique, sensitive application of dynamics, and lyrical phrasing provides an opportunity for the superior pianist to present a masterful performance.

It went through several iterations, but what started out as an experiment in mixolydian mode turned out to be a calming piece that celebrates just being still. So often we pack our schedules to the brim, and burn out trying to do all the things. Lately I've come to appreciate the value of just stopping to breathe, to pray, to just be in the moment. Sometimes the best music happens in the space between notes. Length: approximately 3.5 minutes, 3 pagesLevel: late intermediate as written, early intermediate if you edit out the mordents and other ornamentations.

The piece is highly accessible and is appropriate for most standards of pianist, including students and advanced players.

Solo Piano Arrangement By Thomas GuntherSanta Claus Is Coming To Town is another one of my favorite Christmas songs. For some reason I love playing it in a bluesy style, with some jazz voicings. The bridge is more in stride piano style.About The ArrangementThe arrangement includes different stylistic elements found in more traditional popular piano music. It definitely has a bluesy vibe, but also shows elements of jazz and stride piano.When it comes to the form I extended it by adding an intro that comes back in-between sections in form of an interlude. There is also an outro. About The Sheet MusicThe sheet music is basically a transcription of my recording. It contains jazz chord symbols and plentiful of articulations as well as some dynamic markings. My Arranging WorkflowI have different approaches for creating solo piano arrangements of songs. The one I took here is as follows. First I come up with different ideas, try them out, and after a while settle on those I like best. Once I practiced and internalized those ideas I press record and hope for the best. Before the final version is done, I record myself many times over. This gives me the opportunity to improve upon each version until I have one that I feel comfortable with.Recommendations For Learning The SongI recommend that you first listen to my performance while reading along in the sheet music. This way you get a better understanding about the phrasing and the rhythmic feel.You may want to spend a little time just vamping a few bars to get into the groove. When that feels good move on to different sections.The bridge is different in feel because it is based on stride piano rather than blues. Stride piano features big jumps in the left hand and big intervals between the outer notes (up to a 10th). Should you have difficulty in playing those big intervals (smaller hands will make this hard) you may roll the notes and use the sustain pedal.Is This Arrangement For You?This solo piano arrangement is for every pianist who would like to try playing Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town in a more bluesy-jazzy style. Dependent on what your specialty is musically speaking, you made benefit from it in different ways. Here are some examples.Classical PianistsIf you are a classical pianist who rarely listens to jazz and blues music, this arrangement might be a great way to dip your feed into more contemporary genres and styles like blues and jazz. This said, it might be quite challenging. Not from a technical point of view, but from a musical point of view. For example, swung eighth notes and accents and phrasing in blues and jazz are somewhat contrary to classical music. It's gonna be a great learning experience for sure!Jazz PianistsShould you be a jazz musician or blues musician, you may not necessarily want to play the arrangement as written note for note. Instead, you might just fall in love with some of my ideas and create your own arrangement based on those.This goes especially for the solo section. You can play my solo or use it as inspiration for your own solo. The degree of virtuosity is relatively low, but nevertheless not suitable for absolute beginners. Technically, the main characteristic of this piece is the polyrhythm 2 against 3: the melody subdivides the quarter in 2, and the accompaniment plays triplets. In this sense, an answer to Carl Czerny's polyrhythmic studie in E major. Please use abundant pedal when playing this piece. The idea is to generate a cloud of sound, not a machinal pattern. The sound character of this piece should be closer to Debussy than to Scarlatti. The initial indication scorrevole (fleeting) should orientate the character and the sound quality, the touch. Fermatas and caesuras should add time to the bar, like breathing in. In bar 8 (end) the silence is only in he left hand: the note of the right hand shouldn't be interrupted. This is actually clear if one read the rhythms carefully, but my experience tells me that it is prudent to underline this particular point. In bar 16 (and similar places), left hand: it is the central melody what should be in foreground, not the bass. Imagine that the melody is played by a cello or viola, and the bass by a double bass (or better: a bassoon). Try to achieve a different timbre and to separate therefore both layers. The title refers to this poem: Sum venti ingenium breve Flos sum, scilicet, aeris …… Sum blandum, petulans, vagum, Pulchrum, purpureum, et decens, Comptum, floridulum, et recens. About the arrangement(See also (PopJazzKeys.com/The-Bare-Necessities)This is a relatively easy to play solo piano jazz arrangement of THE BAR NECESSITIES. The song is a traditional jazz tune made famous in the Walt Disney movie THE JUNGLE BOOK. The video and audio recording I posted here features me playing the short version of my arrangement. When played as written (with all the repeats) it is almost 4 minutes long.What's cool about this arrangement is that you can easily add a bass player and even an entire rhythm section while playing it the same way as you would in a solo performance!Who this arrangement is best suited forI think everyone who likes the song except perhaps advanced jazz pianists will have fun learning and playing this arrangement. I arranged this piece originally with my younger piano students in mind, who have smaller hands than most adults. That’s why there are no large intervals or big jumps in the left hand. Something generally found in ragtime and early jazz piano styles. This means that my arrangement is perfectly suited for pianists with smaller hands. Of course pianists with large hands (like myself) can play it too (ha-ha!).I think it is also a great piece for pianists who want to familiarize themselves with playing jazz piano. And since I wrote out every note and articulation, they can play along with the recording and hopefully pick up the traditional jazz feel along the way.Although the arrangement is not very difficult, it poses several challenges for the inexperienced pianist, as explained later.How I arranged itAs I already explained above, there are no large intervals or big jumps in the left hand to be found. Instead, I focused more on polyphonic arranging techniques, in both hands. I also used guide tones and inversions.The left hand imitates the accompaniment style of a traditional jazz guitar or banjo player with added half time bass figures that are typically played by a tuba or upright bass an octave lower. Tips for how to learn this arrangementWhen I teach this song to my students I strongly recommend to them to listen to the original version and my recording a lot, rather than explaining to them how swinging eighth notes and jazz articulation work. By the way, there are a few bars where you hear me playing straight eighths on the recording (as indicated in the sheet music). I decided to add articulations so that pianists who have not a lot of experience with playing jazz will find it easier to play it with the appropriate “touchâ€. It's a good idea to check those out.Should you not be familiar with playing polyphonic passages with one hand, you might want to practice very slowly at first and attempt to balance the different voices appropriately. Listening to the recording will also help with discovering dynamic possibilities. I didn’t want to clutter up the sheet music with dynamic markings, so listening to the recording is really the only way to figure out what dynamics I had in mind.

One of the Masterpieces of Chinese Music of 20th Century The magnificent cave art at Dunhuang, in Western China sets the stage for the ballet, “Dream of Dunhuangâ€. In the middle of the vast wastes of Western China, lies the oasis of Dunhuang, situated in today‘s Gansu Province. Since the Western Han Dynasty(202BC-8AC), Dunhuang was an important trading and cultural center on the famous “Silk Road’, the ribbon of communication which fostered the historic ties between East and West. In the East was China, source of treasured trading articles such as silk; in the West, the â€road“ branched to Venice, and north to what is today‘s Russia. The mural led caves at Dunhuang, which were begun the Northern Wei dynasty(336AD), and developed over one thousand years into the Qing Dynasty, re presents one of the world‘s richest cultural treasures. Drawing on bothn Western(Indian and Persian) as well as Chinese tradition, the caves, of which 492 remain intact, were decorated as a mines of religious devotion, with the initiation of Buddhism into China. The subjects of the murals, such as devise, demons, apsaras and bodhisattvas, represent the entire pantheon of Buddhist mythology, yet are also significant in their representation of muti-racial and muti-cultural influences, standing as an important testament to the age old exchange between East and West. A fabricated fantasia, the story of the ballet was inspirited by the famous artist, maestro Chang Shu-hong, who dedicated his whole life to Dunhuang. One of the Huang An-lun‘s major compositions with the play written by Xu Qing-dong, the score of “Dream of Dunhuang†was completed in mid-1979. The ballet has been dedicated to the composer‘s closest friends, Canadian writers John Fraser and Elizabeth MacCallun. Up to the date this CD being released, the ballet has never got a chance to performed in mainland China. Nevertheless, its music has been wildly performed and warmly received around the world. The Singapore premiere of its suite No.1 was performed by the SSO, conducted by Maestro Lim Yao. It has been also chosen as one of the “Master Piece of Chinese Music in 20th Century†in 1993. The world premiere of the complete ballet was performed successfully by the Russian State Ballet of Moscow, directed by its artist director, Vyatcheslav Godeyev, in 1994. Choreographed by Chen Min, it was took place in Taiwan with the Taiwan Symphony Orchestra, conducted by maestro David C.H.Chen. In 2002, ROI of Hong Kong has released the CD of the whole ballet, performed by the Russian Philharmonic Orchestra of Moscow. This is also the audio file attached. Before this recording conducted by the composer himself, the entire score was also performed by the Bolshoi Symphony Orchestra of Moscow in1995. The YouTube video was the World Premiere in Taiwan by the Russia National Ballet with the Taiwan symphony Orchestra, conducted by David Chen in 1994. The ballet, “ Dream of Dunhuang†depicts two young artists seeking the ultimate experience in love and expression. The word revolutionary is overused, so we fail to realize that Clair de Lune is difficult to play largely because it was difficult to notate. If the faculty of the Paris Conservatory didn't understand or appreciate Debussy, why would we expect the staff of a publishing company (as competent as they were) to understand the demands of his music. Debussy broke the boundaries of conventional piano notation. That means contradictions and ambiguity, which must be addressed.A note about fingering: where and why it is or is not presented. I've done my best to prepare an edition of this music that will enable the Intermediate Classical pianist to prepare and perform this masterpiece. My goal is to include information that the pianist needs, but does not already know. For Claire de Lune, some passages are dependent upon specific hand/fingering solutions, while other passages are either (1) equally playable with different fingering, or (2) only playable by what essentially becomes known as a self-evident solution. For example, m9-24, and m61-62, fall into this category. Octaves can only practically be played with fingers 1 and 5. I provide a lot of finger numbers, but that is not the same as creating an edition that can be played without significant staff reading. The premise is that an intermediate musician should have access to advanced material--that is a musician is motivated to play pieces one level more advanced. Attempting to bridge more than one level is not my goal.

Recorded as a 56-minute improvisation on 12/25/02, the music is thoughtful, somber, and quite elegant. There are actually thirteen pieces on the CD, but they segue into each other, making it difficult to tell where one song ends and another begins. This is very definitely NOT a problem, as the album unfolds naturally and organically, asking questions, looking inward, and expressing shock and grief. However, this is not music about only despair or rage. I also hear hope and determination as well as quiet reverence - the strange mix of emotions we all felt during those dark days. Titles include From Cradle to Coffin, Bravery, Numb, New York Skyline, and Truth. Isadar has a wonderful way of wearing his heart on his musical sleeve, pouring deep emotion and heartfelt expression into his music. The music was recorded in one take, but rather than meandering all over the place, Isadar used recurring themes that make the work cohesive and consistent enough to hold together even after many listens. This is a very strong and passionate work, but it was recorded with a rather quiet voice which allows it to be very comfortable and soothing background music as well as evocative solo piano music for concentrated and focused listening. The Purple Heart Sheet Music Collection is a note-for-note solo piano transcription of Isadar’s 2003 memorial CD by the same name (transcribed by David Shenton). The recording and book are a tribute to those who died in the attacks of 9/11/2001. The music was recorded in one take and although there are thirteen titles, the pieces segue into each other, creating a seamless 56-minute improvisation. The book indicates where the various pieces begin and end, but can also be played as one long piece. Although the theme of the music is very somber and bleak, the music covers the broad range of emotions we all felt during that period - anger, sadness, hope, determination, resolve, fear, grief, etc. Although the recording is an improvisation, Isadar incorporates a recurring theme that holds the work together as a single entity. Some pieces are very slow while others are lively and even fast. All thirteen pieces are in C minor/Eb major, but the variety of moods and tempos keep the music evolving without becoming repetitious. When the recurring theme pops up, it’s like seeing an old friend!The difficulty in playing someone’s improvisation is that the creation of the music was spontaneous and free-flowing. It isn’t easy to read an improvisation and give the music that quality of freedom. Less advanced pianists might find this frustrating. The time signatures change frequently, but a competent pianist will have no trouble with that. As I was playing this book, I sensed that I was looking directly into Isadar’s heart and feeling what he was feeling as the music was being born - a very powerful experience! Isadar is an artist on both Enlightened Piano Radio & Whisperings Solo Piano Radio, featuring today's biggest names in solo piano music.

This étude is one of energetic character with simple, yet powerful melodies and rhythms that create a sense of curiosity. I composed this piece in a simpler form when I was around 17, in my high school music theory class. All of the ideas were there, melody and structure, but what it lacked was experience. It felt flat. So, 5 years later, after I rediscovered the piece, I decided to put some time into adding flavor, excitement, and intrigue. In doing so, I hope that I've created not only a technical challenge that will strengthen your skills, but a fun piece of music that you'll love to play!Split into three parts in an ABA format, this piece features a main theme divided by a softer second theme, both of which provide technical challenges in their own rights. The first focus of this étude is to build stamina in maintaining rapid octave progressions in each hand. This is coupled with quick jumps in the right hand that require precise and deliberate movements to perfect. The second focus is to strengthen control over legato passages in rolling arpeggios, while maintaining a delicate touch for the melody, and exercising the dynamic range of the fingers.In practicing this piece, it is very important to start slowly and with definitive control in all sections! It cannot be stressed enough how much of an impact bad habits can make on the execution of this étude. If you work diligently on finger control and technique, it will stick with you in all of your future endeavors! Be warned though: this is a difficult piano solo. It will take time and effort to learn, however, those efforts will all pay off in the end. Don't let it discourage you. Amazing Grace is a Christian hymn published in 1779 with words written in 1772 by English Anglican clergyman and poet John Newton (1725–1807). It is an immensely popular hymn, particularly in the United States, where it is used for both religious and secular purposes. Newton wrote the words from personal experience; he grew up without any particular religious conviction, but his life's path was formed by a variety of twists and coincidences that were often put into motion by others' reactions to what they took as his recalcitrant insubordination. He was pressed (navally conscripted) into service with the Royal Navy, and after leaving the service, he became involved in the Atlantic slave trade. In 1748, a violent storm battered his vessel off the coast of County Donegal, Ireland, so severely that he called out to God for mercy. While this moment marked his spiritual conversion, he continued slave trading until 1754 or 1755, when he ended his seafaring altogether. Newton began studying Christian theology and later became an abolitionist.
