In 2007, the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) ranked Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas the third most-performed Christmas song written by ASCAP members of the past five years.

I was playing it as a joke, but then I realized that I really liked the chords I was using. As I continued playing, the song evolved to have more depth, and the piece that I had started as a joke quickly turned into one of my favorites I've ever written. Fast and lively foot-tapping neo-Celtic, at its best on electronic keyboard but also a fun piano solo. (Duration 8+ minutes) Reel Jiggery-pokery The song started as a jig but drank too much and reeled into 12/8 time. Properly speaking, despite its strong 4-beat pulse, it's a Slide. Or perhaps a Double Jig. Except for the mid-section, which is really a Reel! Needless to say, this is not for the purists...but it's huge fun for the rest of us! Playing and Performing We've marked it Advanced Intermediate. It's the indicated speed which makes demands! But you can play it slower and enjoy! On electronic or MIDI keyboard, use a percussive/plucked foundation (e.g. piano, harp, faux guitar) with a sustained string patch (string ensemble, synth strings, viola works well, fiddle works well, most violin patches are terrible!). For piano, you'll have to use more of the sustain pedal but not too much or it'll go all muddy on you, just like a mis-step in an Irish bog! (Original live and YouTube performances were on a Medeli MC 710, from 2005. This keyboard allowed splitting and dual voices. Piano was used as foundation both above and below the split point. A loud viola patch was used as the second voice on the upper part of the keyboard, as the dominant fiddle sound carrying the melody. A synth string patch was used as second voice on the lower half, giving the drones.) Add Your Own Salt and Pepper to the Score! The song is scored for clarity, not as a detailed demand for every possible nuance. It's fast, so although simple to look at when not playing, you'll need to be reading the music at speed. Unless, of course, you're blessed with a brilliant memory! So the score isn't cluttered with ornaments and fiddly bits, or lots of expression marks. Especially, it's not cluttered by a lot of suspended notes. BUT...you will need to suspend a lot of notes as you play. Think drones running all over the place and use your keyboard sustaining string patches to bring those drones out! Listen to the live recordings, they'll help. You, as player, have lots of freedom! It's up to you how many additional frills, or emphasis, or drone suspensions you throw in. Why alt.callahans?In the far distant past of 2005, there was an Internet newsgroup of that name, in honor and emulation of Callahan's Crosstime Saloon, a fictional bar with strongly community-minded and empathic clientele, part of the fictional universe of American writer Spider Robinson. Landscape paintings and printed illustrations of the Cross of Calvary were ubiquitous in Christian literature in the late 19th century, so it not surprising that allusions to such art are found in the texts of hymns. The three hymns heard in Sonata Hymnica No. 5 all evoke some sense of seeing, in a spiritual way, the scene of the Crucifixion. Sonata Hymnica No. 5 opens with a sturdy and rugged statement of When I Survey the Wondâ€™rous Cross, written by Isaac Watts in 1707. This poem continues: On which the Prince of Glory dyâ€™d, . . . See from His Head, his Hands, his Feet, Sorrow and Love flow mingled down! In the United States, music educator Lowell Mason (1792-1872) composed a tune in 1824 for singing Wattsâ€™ hymn. Named HAMBURG tune, it was an adapted form of some Gregorian chant in Church Mode I. This combination of poem and tune became very popular; so much so, that by the 1880s, elaborations of it appeared in print. The most enduring is the pairing of Wattsâ€™ poem and Masonâ€™s tune with a simple camp meeting song, At the Cross, to be a refrain. It has the phrases, At the cross, where I first saw the light . . . It was there by faith I received my sight. The centerpiece of Sonata Hymnica No. 5 is the tune TOPLADY, the usual tune for singing Rock of Ages. This tune was composed in 1830 by Thomas Hastings (1784-1872), an associate of Lowell Mason in New York. He wrote hymns and hymn tunes, published hymnals, and worked tirelessly to elevate choral singing in churches. Hastings indicated that he intended his tune for singing Rock of Ages by naming it after the author of the hymn-poem, the English pastor Augustus Toplady (1740-1778). The Rev. A. B. Grosart wrote in a memorial that Toplady was no poet or inspired singer, but an impulsive, rash-spoken, reckless preacher who could nonetheless picture vanishing gleams of imaginative light in his hymnic verses. A better impression was gained by poet A. C. Benson (1862-1925), who, upon hearing Rock of Ages sung at William Gladstoneâ€™s funeral at Westminster Abbey in 1898 --- a rare State funeral attended by several members of the British Royal family --- wrote, To have written such words which should come home to people in moments of high, deep, and passionate emotion . . . there can hardly be anything worth doing better than that. Souvenir de Porto Rico, Op. 31, is a musical composition for piano by American composer Louis Moreau Gottschalk written from 1857 during a tour in Puerto Rico. Dedicated to the Dutch piano virtuoso and salon music composer Ernest Henry Lubeck, and published in Mainz circa 1860 with the subtitle of Marche des Gibaros, it is based on the Christmas folk song 'Si me dan pasteles, denmelos calientes', performed by local peasants known as Jíbaros.<br> <br> The piece makes use of Latin-American and Afro-American melodies and rhythms almost fifty years before early ragtime and jazz would popularize its use.Souvenir de Porto Rico was written in the last trimester of 1857, when of Gottschalk's stay at the sugar plantation of English-born Mr. Cornelius Cartwright, in Plazuela. At the time, Gottschalk was on vacation with singer Adelina Patti and her father. He would decide not to leave Puerto Rico, but instead remain there for weeks. During this period he composed a number of additional pieces after the local musical styles.Gottschalk would say about the setting where he composed the piece: "[I was] perched upon the edge of a crater, [and] my cabin overlooked the whole country. Every evening I moved my piano out upon the terrace, and played for myself alone, everything that the scene opened up before me inspired. It was there that I composed 'Marche des Gibaros.'.
