Published by Freedom Band Press (A0.987645). John Philip Sousa shall forever be regarded as the March King. However, his body and scope of work extend well beyond the marches which made him so famous. In a rough accounting of Sousa’s body of work, marches make up only the second most numerous of his efforts – some 135 march compositions versus over 320 arrangements and transcriptions for Band. Outside of his marches, most of the Sousa catalog, including his humoresques, remains unpublished and largely unheard today. By way of an old Sousa concert program, we learn the narrative of his humoresque Among My Souvenirs. In it, the Nichols song Among My Souvenirs is lengthened into a sketch. Among his souvenirs is a photograph, letters and a broken heart. As he meditates, he goes back to a time before he was broken-hearted and remembers when he and his beloved were softly singing Twinkling Stars are Laughing, Love. Next, his mind reverts to the time when he was Seeing Her Home, recalling the songs of years gone by at Aunt Dinah’s Quilting Party – he was Seeing Nellie Home. After this, he travels to the Far East, and visions of The Road to Mandalay come to him. From there, he meditates on the Sweet Mysteries of Life and, finally, arrives at the closing picture in which he is once more Among my Souvenirs.

This fanfare, however, is geared mostly toward  Woodwinds. The brass takes background and counter-melody, while woodwinds take melody.  There are, however, several sections where the brass takes the wheel! At the end, a standard brass chorale ends the composition, with woodwinds giving off the final ounce of melodic content. The fanfare is supposed to be as magnificent as the person who it is dedicated to.

The first movement begins with a percussion fanfare that leads into woodwind melodies coupled with the euphonium. Then the percussion takes over again, with a timpani solo feature. The second movement is a dialogue between the clarinet and brass choirs. As the choir masses become more dense, a plaintive solo oboe emerges from the din … molto cantabile!!! The third movement is a scherzo featuring the trumpets and the woodwinds. The percussion section joins in with outbursts and commentaries … The brass choir returns in the last movement with more melodies emanating from the woodwinds. The work ends in quiet tranquility … molto cantabile again!!! The work is dedicated to the effervescent Bill Drury who conducts the wind ensembles at the New England Conservatory of Music. I was very grateful to Bill when he asked me to write something for him and the Jordan Winds at NEC. It is a huge challenge to compose music for large wind groups. I find most concert band pieces too thick and mucky in texture. The trick is to create concert band music that is light and transparent; to orchestrate in such a way that you can see/hear light seeping through. I hope I was able to do that. Enjoy!! Serenity and Dance has many interest for both teachers and student performers. There is a broad range of dynamics, expression, and ensemble balance required. The tight harmonies, changing meter, textures, melodic layering, and intensity are exciting for both conductor and performer. The piece utilizes a variety of percussion instruments (including vocalizations) and every wind/brass line is an important part of the overall performance. I also find that, despite its frequent meter changes, the composition has a catchy melody. Many of the student performers have told me that they’ve gone home after school singing the woodwind melody from the Dance portion (even brass and percussionists!).

I have enjoyed performing this with bands often in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley of Virginia at concerts and at patriotic ceremonies and celebrations. It is approximately 2 ½ minutes in length. It is a medium difficulty level however with the generous use of cross cuing less experienced players could perform this. This arrangement uses the time signatures of 3/4, 4/4, and 5/4 throughout and the keys of F, Eb, and G major. It includes indications when to stagger breathe. I have included generous cross cues so that it may be performed with varied instrumentation. I have included the pedal markings in the vibraphone part. It features the tubas playing the melody in counterpoint with the horns and euphoniums the first time the melody is stated. This arrangement may be performed: 1. Brass only (Play all cues) +/- Percussion 2. Woodwind only (Clarinets play Trumpet parts and all other Woodwinds play all cues) +/- Percussion 3. Several combinations of Brass, Woodwinds and Percussion Feel free to experiment with this flexible arrangement. There are many possibilities!

Gustav Mahler’s “Veni Creator Spiritus†was a new musical setting for the lyrics of a 9th century Latin hymn, originally sung as a Gregorian chant, as an invocation of the Holy Spirit during the celebration of the Christian Feast of Pentecost. This work would comprise the Part I of the symphony with Part II being a setting of the words from the closing scene of “Faust†by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Mahler envisioned the premiere of this new symphony, Number 8, as a massively grand spectacle, with an orchestra not only including strings but a large brass and woodwind section, eight soloists, two full adult choruses, and a children’s choir. The full complement for the premiere was 171 instrumentalists and 858 singers, a total of 1029 musicians, which inspired the promoter to advertise the work as “Symphony of a Thousand.†Part I, “Veni Creator Spiritus,†expresses the whole range of human emotions: grand statements expressing the awe of divine majesty alternate with gentle melodic lines of tender love. It combines moments of awesome dramatic tension with the lightness of a fugue. Robert Anello’s arrangement makes this exceptional music accessible to large concert bands while maintaining the essence and flow of Mahler’s original work.
