Published by Edition Schwalbe (A0.1497141). Karel Komzák jr. was born in Prague, studied there violin and became a very successful conductor in the Austrian Empire. From 1883 he was bandmaster of the Imperial and Royal Infantry Regiment No. 84 in Vienna, the orchestra which was awarded the title of the best military band in the world at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1889. Komzák even conducted his Baden spa orchestra at the World Exhibition in Chicago 1904. His Folk Opera Edelweiss premiered in 1892 in Salzburg. The arrangement is one half tone higher than the original key of the composition for symphony orchestra and was commissioned and first time performed by Mozarteum Wind Philharmonic Salzburg conducted by Hansjoerg Angerer at their Three Kings' Concert on 6 January 2018 in the Grosses Festspielhaus (Large Festival Hall) in Salzburg, Austria and broadcasted live by Austrian television. Born in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1887, Florence Price received early musical training from her mother, going on to study at the prestigious New England Conservatory of Music, graduating in 1906 with a Soloist’s Diploma in Organ Performance, and a Teacher’s Diploma in Piano Performance. After completing her degree, Price returned back to the south to teach music and after about 20 years, moved her family moved to Chicago to ultimately escape the racial tension in the south. It was here that she was able to properly establish herself as a concert pianist, organist and composer. She composed over 300 works, including 20 full orchestral pieces and over 110 art songs, many performed by leading American orchestras and esteemed vocalists. Price was the first African-American woman composer to earn national recognition. Seen as a pioneer among women, she was celebrated constantly for her achievements.Originally, written for organ, 'Adoration' (dating from 1951, just a few years before her death), is one of Florence Price’s best-known works, available in several different versions. Beginning in the 1930s, Price earned a living by playing organ in churches as well as in theatres. Adoration is a work of deep devotion and sincerity, a simple yet beautiful work suitable for church concerts and for remembrance/memorial events.

Composed in 1943, about 10 years before her death, 'The Oak' is an unpublished tone poem, perhaps more appropriately described as an 'orchestral essay', quite serious in tone and character. The foreboding opening slowly grows as more instruments enter the mix. The piece explores a number of different moods and atmospheres, from mysterious to more aggressive and irritated. Arranged for symphonic wind ensemble, 'The Oak' is a major contribution to the repertoire and deserves detailed attention - there are two different endings, the second, one that resolves quietly, is written in the score as 'the composer's preference'.

It was originally published in London as part of the Jullien Band Journal in 1849 and uses music from America as thematic material in a manner in which Louis Jullien (1812-1860) did with his other polkas and quadrilles written to showcase music from different countries. French-born Louis Jullien was an international superstar conductor, composer and music publisher. Among other things in his career, he led his Jullien Orchestra on a tour of America in 1853 and founded the concert series in London known as the Proms Concerts. He also employed some of the biggest names in the music world at one time or another including Hector Berlioz, Jean-Baptiste Arban, and Theodore Thomas (founder of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra).

Published by John Ivor Holland (A0.1492791). Ann Hampton Callaway (born May 30, 1958) is an American jazz singer, songwriter, and actress. She wrote and sang the theme song for the TV series 'The Nanny'. A native of Chicago, her father, John Callaway, was a journalist and her mother was a singer, pianist, and vocal coach. She learned scat singing from her father and a love of jazz from his record collection, and she learned classical music from her mother. 'Christmas Lullaby' was recorded by Barbra Streisand in 2001 and is featured on her album 'Christmas Memories', it was later recorded by Callaway herself and has also been covered by Ronan Tynan. This version for concert band features a solo vocal, but options for Alto Sax or Flugelhorn are provided, making it a really flexible option, providing a calmer moment within a holiday concert. This arrangement has been made as part of a project to bring more works by women composers into the worldwide concert band repertoire.
