The hymns are scored in four parts and could be used with virtually any combination of conventional wind instruments. They are presented in a set of three books and include full four-part instrumental scores plus separate parts in a variety of useful transpositions. Parts 1 and 2 (soprano and alto) are provided in B flat, E flat and C (8ve higher than concert); Part 3 (tenor) in B flat (9th above concert), E flat, F and C (bass clef) and Part 4 (bass) in B flat, E flat and C. There’s also an optional but useful simplified keyboard part intended for less experienced keyboard players. The left hand plays only the bass part most of the time, with the right hand part kept as simple as possible. It could be used as the basis of an accompaniment and means that you can use the arrangements as solos, duets or trios. The piano part too means that you can use the arrangements as solos, duets or trios. These arrangements are intended either as stand-alone pieces that could be used as interludes in a service, or they could be used to accompany solo, choral or congregational singing. This is essential music for schools and many churches and contains probably all the hymns you’ll ever need. Nearer, My God, to Thee arranged for Young Concert Band, is a 19th-century Christian hymn by Sarah Flower Adams, based loosely on Genesis 28:11–19, the story of Jacob's dream. Genesis 28:11–12 can be translated as follows: So he came to a certain place and stayed there all night, because the sun had set. And he took one of the stones of that place and put it at his head, and he lay down in that place to sleep. Then he dreamed, and behold, a ladder was set up on the earth, and its top reached to heaven; and there the angels of God were ascending and descending on it…. A slow march I entitled The Royal Hussar, is an original ceremonial slow march of mine, suitable for indoor or outdoor performance. Slow March: This is a ceremonial pace, used for funeral marches and when a unit’s colours are marched out in front of the troops. The feet are kept parallel to the ground and the arms are never used. In the United States Marine Corps, arms swing as the distance they normally would in quicktime, but at the same pace as marching. U.S. Marine Color Guards do not swing their arms. Slow March is typically used in the Marine Corps for funeral details and ceremonies such as the Marine Corps Ball (when the cake is escorted out). In Spain, Latin America, and the Philippines this is done during religious processions whenever a military band joins it. This march style is the official parade march in the armed forces of Bolivia and Ecuador and the military academies and schools of Venezuela, done with the goose step during parades and ceremonies. The standard pace is 60 paces per minute. Famous slow marches include:Preobrajensky Regimental Slow March Presented to the Royal Marines by Admiral of the Fleet The Earl Mountbatten of Burma on 10th June 1964 and first performed as the Regimental Slow March of the Royal Marines on Horse Guards Parade that night. The march was composed by the Russian composer Donajowsky for the Russian Tzar’s Preobrajensky Guard. The Royal Hussars Slow March ’Coburg’, a tune composed by Haydn and arranged by Grant-James in the late 19th Century, is without doubt one of the most well-known and famous Slow Marches to be written. ’The Eagle’, which itself is a combination of the 14th and 20th Hussars slow marches is also a very strong march, but not widely known outside 14th/20th King’s Hussars’ circles. The Garb of Old Gaul (sometimes given as Auld Gaul) is an 18th-century patriotic Scottish march and song about Highland soldiers during the Seven Years War. The music was written by General John Reid, who was a senior officer of the 42nd Regiment of Foot (The Black Watch) during the Seven Years War. The words have traditionally been attributed to Sir Harry Erskine (1710 -1765). Robert Burns described it as This excellent loyal Scottish song and states that it first appeared in print in Herd’s Collection of 1769. Alternative titles include The Highland Character and The Highland or 42nd Regiment’s March. The tune was originally a quick march but was later rearranged as a slow march. Other famous slow marches of the British Army include Golden Spurs & Scipio. Put away Scipio, Coburg & Garb of Old gaul, time for a newcomer on the block! The melodies used in this new march entitled 'The Heroes of Telemark' are songs from Norway, Kviteseidsangen and Fjaasesundsangen are from Vest Telemark in Southern Norway, while Mellom bakker og berg is an old melody by Ludvig Mathias Lindeman (1812-1887). Keith Terrett has re-harmonised and orchestrated these fine melodies into an exciting march, in honour of the gallant 'Heroes of Telemark'. It opens with a tuba and woodblock duet and then skips along happily through a couple meter changes and ends delightfully in two parts. In some ways, this is a relatively simple song. In other ways, it’s tricky. At one place, the melody is tossed around, being played by most instruments within 8 measures. Then, it morphs into 6/8 time for just a few delightful measures before going back to 4/4 for the grand wind-up. IMPORTANT NOTE: The Cover Pages and Conductor's Score are 8.5 x 14. They will need to be printed on appropriate sized paper. Published by Nagamon Publications (A0.1292281). Dame Ethel Mary Smyth DBE (22 April 1858 – 8 May 1944) was an English composer and a member of the women's suffrage movement. Her compositions include songs, works for piano, chamber music, orchestral works, choral works and operas.Smyth tended to be marginalised as a ‘woman composer’ as though her work could not be accepted as mainstream. Yet when she produced more delicate compositions, they were criticised for not measuring up to the standard of her male competitors. Nevertheless, she was granted a damehood, the first female composer to be so honoured.The Wreckers is an opera in three acts, composed by Dame Ethel Smyth to a libretto in French by Henry Brewster. After spending considerable energy in trying to get the work performed in French, the first performance took place in a German translation by John Bernhoff, under the title of Strandrecht, at the Neues Theater, Leipzig on 11 November 1906. Smyth persisted in her attempts to see it staged elsewhere, but it was not until the conductor Thomas Beecham championed the work that a complete, staged performance was achieved in England in 1909 with funding support from her friend Mary Dodge.  The Overture has been arranged for wind band, and the PDF contains the full score and a full set of parts.

The song had been written for performances by bass and tenor vocal duet.The song begins: Dark the shades of night are growing, keen and chill the wind is blowing, bright the watchfire lights are glowing, 'Tis the battle eve…The piece appears to have been composed in the early 1890s with the first recorded performance at the Athenaeum in Melbourne (Australia) in May 1893. ‘The Battle Eve’ was very popular during the First World War period with many performances at many concerts related to the war effort in Australia. This included patriotic concerts held across Australia during 1914. The first of these was a patriotic concert held at the School of Arts, South Grafton, New South Wales, on Tuesday 1 September 1914. Miss Eva Beatson performed the song with proceeds from the evening totaling 52 pounds. Housman‘s poems by George Butterworth, reorchestrated for Chamber Wind Ensemble, was commissioned by the Maidstone Wind Symphony for their recent Concert of Remembrance entitled A Time For Peace.Composed in 1911 for baritone voice and piano, this collection of short pieces utilises poems from A.E. Housman’s A Shropshire Lad published in 1896. The words have been woven into a delicate and moving composition, with the emotions contained in the text expertly drawn out through use of dynamics and phrasing.The delicate nature of the original pieces has been kept, with the voices of the wind orchestra giving a new timbral twist to the music. The reality of growing up in wartime is prevalent in the theme of the music and is captured well by Butterworth’s original. There has been a few orchestral settings of these songs, but this arrangement is to be the first for wind band.Premiered by Martin Hindmarsh and a selection of the Maidstone Wind Symphony players, the performance was delicate and true to the original essence of the piano accompaniment. An arrangement of the famous Smoke on the Water for Concert/Wind Band.Smoke on the Water is a song by English rock band Deep Purple, released on their 1972 studio album Machine Head. The song's lyrics are based on true events, chronicling the 1971 fire at Montreux Casino. It is considered the band's signature song and contains one of the most recognizable guitar riffs in rock history.In 2004, Rolling Stone magazine placed Smoke on the Water number 434 on its list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. Total Guitar magazine ranked the song's riff number 4 on its Greatest Guitar Riffs Ever list, and in March 2005, Q magazine placed it at number 12 in its list of the 100 greatest guitar tracks.Smoke on the Water is easily identified by its central theme, developed by guitarist Ritchie Blackmore. It is a four-note blues scale melody in G minor,[8] harmonised in parallel fourths. The riff, played on a Fender Stratocaster electric guitar by Blackmore, is later joined by hi-hat and distorted organ, then the rest of the drums, then electric bass parts before the start of Ian Gillan's vocal.Blackmore later claimed that the main riff is an interpretation of inversion of Symphony No. 5 by Ludwig van Beethoven, and that I owe him a lot of money.Jon Lord doubles the guitar part on a Hammond C3 organ played through a distorted Marshall amp, creating a tone very similar to that of the guitar. "God Defend New Zealand" was written as a poem in the 1870s by Irish-born, Victorian-raised immigrant Thomas Bracken of Dunedin. A competition to compose music for the poem was held in 1876 by The Saturday Advertiser and judged by three prominent Melbourne musicians, with a prize of ten guineas. The winner of the competition was the Tasmanian-born John Joseph Woods of Lawrence, New Zealand who composed the melody in a single sitting the evening after finding out about the competition. The song was first performed at the Queen?s Theatre, Princes Street, Dunedin, on Christmas Day, 1876. [Wikipedia]

The program note that appears in the original printed score is noted here:There is a wedding feast in progress in the village inn, with music, dancing, carousing. Mephistopheles and Faust pass by, and Mephistopheles induces Faust to enter and take part in the festivities. Mephistopheles snatches the fiddle from the hands of a lethargic fiddler and draws from it indescribably seductive and intoxicating strains. The amorous Faust whirls about with a full-blooded village beauty in a wild dance; they waltz in mad abandon out of the room, into the open, away into the woods. The sounds of the fiddle grow softer and softer, and the nightingale warbled his love-laden song. Mephisto Waltz No. 1 is paired with a work preceding it, Midnight Procession (Der Nächtliche Zug), however this piece is not as widely performed. Liszt later transcribed the waltz into a piano duet and a virtuosic solo piano work. Each of these versions were written around the same time, roughly 1859-62. The orchestral version also has an alternate ending, which is softer and fades away. This arrangement features both endings. This work was then followed by three more Mephisto Waltzes. No. 2 was also written as both an orchestral and piano work, while Nos. 3 and 4 were for piano only. Of the four, the first is the most popular, although the third is also praised as highly musically.
