Countess Maria Theodora Paulina Dora Pejačević (10 September 1885 – 5 March 1923) was a Croatian composer, pianist and violinist and one of the first composers to introduce the orchestral song to Croatian music. Her Symphony in F-sharp minor is considered by scholars to be the first modern symphony in Croatian music. Pejačević is noted for her vocal compositions, piano miniatures, and string quartets, which were heavily influenced by the expressionist and modernist trends of the time. In her early career, Pejačević’s primary themes were highly representative of the Romantic period, but this would change after her experience working as a paramedic in the First World War after which her works reflected the philosophic movement of nihilism and discussed motifs of death, isolation, and futility of war. This wonderful 'Elegie', originally composed for violin and piano, dates from 1913, just before the outbreak of war and is dedicated to Johannes Nádherny-Borutin, an important Czech politician. This arrangement has been made as part of an ongoing project to bring more music by women composers into the worldwide concert band repertoire.

Published by Edition Schwalbe (A0.1497112). Josef Hellmesberger jr. was a very important musician personalitiy in Vienna in the late 19th century. Born in the capital of the Habsburg Empire he became military bandmaster, first violin and concertmaster of the Vienna Court Opera Orchestra and in succession to Gustav Mahler conductor of the Philharmonic Concerts by Vienna Philharmonic. He created also a series of appealing compositions in Viennese style. The arrangement of Unter vier Augen (Under Four Eyes) is one half tone higher than the original key of the composition for symphony orchestra and was commissioned and first time performed by Mozarteum Wind Philharmonic Salzburg conducted by Hansjoerg Angerer at their Three Kings' Concert on 6 January 2019 in the Grosses Festspielhaus (Large Festival Hall) in Salzburg, Austria and broadcasted live by Austrian television. Published by Edition Schwalbe (A0.1021839). Dominik Ertl was a regiment drum major with the Austrian Infantry Regiment No. 4. He also worked as an operetta conductor in Dresden, toured Germany as a violin concertist, was conductor in Danzer's Orpheum in Vienna in 1889 and concert conductor in Riga around 1893. Anton Bruckner is said to have been one of his teachers. Numerous compositions, piano reductions, dances, waltzes, polkas, marches and around 200 couplets, marches and Viennese songs have been preserved from his hand. His best-known composition is the Hoch- und Deutschmeister-March from 1880, which is still one of the great traditional Austrian marches today.

JalousieJalousie is a tango composed by Danish composer Jacob Gade in 1925.  There are two main themes in the composition.  The first is “a temperamental theme†in D minor followed by a lyrical section in D major.  Gade’s composition has two sources of inspiration.  The first was by a violent thunderstorm that surprised him one day while he was out on a walk.  The other source of inspiration came from a jealousy murder, which was much talked about in those days, and was reported in the newspapers.  The first performance was set for September 14, 1925, and Gade himself played the opening violin cadenza of the tango. Samuel Coleridge-Taylor was born in Holborn, London on August 15, 1875 and died from pneumonia at the age of 37 in Croy- don, England on September 1, 1912. At an early age his grandfather began teaching him how to play the violin. His musical ability was obvious and at the age of 15, his extended family arranged for Taylor to study at the Royal College of Music. While at RCM he changed from violin to composition, working under professor Charles Villiers Stanford. His classmates included Ralph Vaughan Williams and Gustav Holst. He was later helped by Edward Elgar in 1898, who described Coleridge-Taylor as far and away the cleverest fellow going amongst the young men. By 1896, Coleridge-Taylor was earning a reputation as a composer and was also accepted as an excellent conductor. In 1898 at the age of 23 he composed the African Suite. Danse Nègre is the last of the four movements that make up the African Suite, Op. 35 (proceeded by Introduction, A Negro Love Song, and Valse). Coleridge-Taylor saw it as his mission in life to help establish the dignity of the black man. He was greatly influenced by black American poet P. L. Dunbar. He made three successful visits to the United States to great acclaim. In 1904, on his first USA tour he was received by President Theodore Roosevelt at the White House. Above all, though, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor was known as a man of great dignity and patience.

Fire Dance has 3 sections, following an A-B-A or simple ternary form: 1. Furious 2. Contemplative 3. Tempo IThe title of this composition might encourage the listener to conjure up visions of a primitive tribal fire ritual, or possibly an entertaining dance performance with fiery hoops and batons. Both are valid reactions and neither of these interpretations would expect a specific program in the music. But an environmental theme can be discerned in the composition by interpreting the opening section as depicting a “furious” wildfire, while the quiet middle section “contemplates” the scene of devastation left behind in the fire’s wake with idyllic memories of what it was like before the fire. The final section would recall the fire’s fury and serve as a warning for the future if something isn't done to combat wildfire-causing climate change.This is a concert band transcription of my original composition for violin and orchestra.

His Fantasie Brillante on Themes from Bizet’s Carmen is by far his most famous composition. Borne’s setting of Carmen’s luscious melodies – like those by Sarasate for the violin, and by Busoni and Horowitz for the piano – combine the virtuoso’s understanding of the solo instrument with a flair for the dance rhythms and passionate colors of the opera. Borne fills his setting with spectacular arpeggios that require fleet fingering and consummate breath control. In an attempt to understand the enigmatic style of Grainger's wind band music, I made a detailed analysis of his recurring orchestrational practices with regard to melody, countermelody, part writing and contrapuntal dynamics. The conclusion is that the Grainger sound is a function of recurring orchestrational techniques, rather than other compositional elements such as melody or harmony. This information was then used to dish up selected Grainger voice and piano pieces in his own idiosyncratic style. I also arranged “British Waterside” and “The Cutting of The Hay” (G. Schrimer). Lord Maxwell’s Goodnight is a reflective, moving piece based on a ballad about Lord Maxwell, who has killed a rival in a long-standing bloody family feud and is leaving for Scotland to avoid prosecution. He bids good-bye to his wife, his lands and his country. Lord Maxwell’s Goodnight appears as Grainger’s British Folk Music Setting No. 42 for high tenor voice or unison male chorus and 4 strings (violin, viola, 2 cellos) in 1904. The original is in the key of F major but has been shifted to Db major in this orchestration. The lyrics of the first verse are: Adieu, madame, my mother dear,But and my sisters three O!Adieu, fair Robert of Orchardstane,My heart is woe for thee, O!Adieu, the lily and the rose,The primrose fair to see, O!Adieu, my ladye, and only joy,For I may not stay with thee, O!.

From 1883 he was bandmaster of the Imperial and Royal Infantry Regiment No. 84 in Vienna, the orchestra which was awarded the title of the best military band in the world at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1889. Komzák even conducted his Baden spa orchestra at the World Exhibition in Chicago 1904. His Folk Opera Edelweiss premiered in 1892 in Salzburg. The arrangement is one half tone higher than the original key of the composition for symphony orchestra and was commissioned and first time performed by Mozarteum Wind Philharmonic Salzburg conducted by Hansjoerg Angerer at their Three Kings' Concert on 6 January 2018 in the Grosses Festspielhaus (Large Festival Hall) in Salzburg, Austria and broadcasted live by Austrian television. The Trumpet Polka, first published in 1856 as part of the Jullien Military Band Journal is a typical composition composed for and used as dance music during the Victorian era. It employees both trumpets and cornets, showcasing the trumpets. The form is that of a dance piece, with large repeated sections designed to be choreographed by a large group of dances, an activity popular at the time. While there is much known about Herman Koenig (1815-1870), there is much that is still somewhat of a mystery, like exactly where he was born and died. What is known is that he was perhaps the ï¬rst cornetist who was indeed an international star. Born in Germany, he became well-known in London as a featured soloist in Louis Jullien’s famous Drury Lane Orchestra in the 1840s. His travels took him to America in 1853 with Jullien in what was the ï¬rst major tour of a European orchestra in America. He also played violin, was a composer and publisher, a music educator, and he helped design and market a cornet, what is known today as the Koenig Cornet.

Julia Perry (25 March 1924 – 24 April 1979) was an American classical composer and teacher who combined European classical and neo-classical training with her African-American heritage. In 1952, Perry began studying under Nadia Boulanger in Paris, during which time she was awarded the Boulanger Grand Prix for her Viola Sonata; after five and a half years in Europe, Perry returned to America and continued her work in composition. 'Pastoral' was composed in 1959 for flute and six strings (2 violins, 2 violas and 2 cellos) here expanded to the palette of the concert band including supporting percussion. This arrangement has been made as part of an ongoing project to widen the repertoire of music by women composers for concert band around the world.
