Score and parts of a Suite of orchestral excerpts from Hamlet (2017), a neo-romantic opera in 3 acts (libretto by Gene Tyburn, after Shakespeare), ranging between tragedy, irony and nostalgia: 1. Overture (Largo - Allegro assai e con brio) in D minor to Hamlet (2017). Dramatic composition, developing in sonatina form the main leitmotifs and themes of the opera (and the famous Folia theme in the beginning).2. Intermezzo No. 1 'The Players': humorous and ironic excerpt in B flat major for wind orchestra, accompanying the entrance of the players/actors.3. Intrada ('The Court'): orchestral march in E flat major, illustrating the entrance of the royal court.4. 'The Play': orchestral 'melodrama' in B flat major, illustrating in a satirical manner the play within the play and transforming bits by John Stepan Zamecnik for the silent movies of early 20th century.5. Intermezzo No. 2 'Polonius Chasing Hamlet': a symphonic scherzo in A flat major, illustrating Hamlet as he playfully grabs Polonius' hat and then is chased by him.6. 'Hamlet's Exile', linking together a postlude in F minor and an interlude in C major for string orchestra: after having accidentally killed Polonius, Hamlet feels sorry for him and then leaves in exile.7. Introduction to Act 3, in C minor: after having secretly returned from his exile in England, Hamlet arrives in the graveyard near Elsinore.8. Dead March in C minor: the funeral procession for Ophelia.9. The final chorus, in D major: after the horrors and crimes and Hamlet fulfilling his duty at his life's price, soothing hope returns.Total duration 33 min. Performing Rights Organization: SOCAN. A concerto for Double Bass and orchestra in the traditional fast - slow – fast concerto format. While not overly challenging for the bass soloist, it does explore, to a degree, the upper reaches of the instrument as well as sounding the beautiful low range. The first movement is that might be called Neo – Classical, opening with an 8-measure solo in a Largo or slow tempo. The tempo then changes to Allegro (fast) for the balance of the movement. The movement ends as it began with the double bass playing alone. The second movement is a jazz waltz. In 9/8, it opens with the soloist playing pizzicato against a rhythmic cord progression. The bass and cello sections pick this up to provide a ground upon which the balance of the movement is played over. The second movement is in the relative minor of Bb which is G minor. A haunting melody is introduced by the bass and doubled by the strings. This melody is replayed by various instruments as the Bass Soloist plays variations on this theme. The harp and the bass solo end the movement. The third movement leans toward French Impressionism. This movement is Andantino; however, it is a spirited. Written in cut time, where the half note equals 92 beats per minute. The melody is introduced by the woodwinds with the harp accompanying. The strings and brass join in as the woodwinds repeat the melody. Finally, the bass solo takes charge of the melody using it as a theme and variation. The harp is used extensively in this concerto providing harmonic, melodic, and rhythmic support for the bass. Written in 2015, the concerto is a new work, however, it is not experimental music. It uses the standard orchestral instruments playing in the standard fashion. It is replete with modern harmonic sounds and chord progressions. As concerto's go, this one is not overly difficult providing the bassist with a starting point as a soloist. It does require the soloist to have some mastery over the instrument as the music traverses most of the instrument’s range. Performance time is approximately 13 minutes and 10 seconds.

I continue to take classes three or four times a week. It's fun, athletic, and challenging. And I'm still working on the basic notion of spotting in my pirouettes ... So when Max Hobart of the Civic Symphony Orchestra of Boston agreed to premiere a new work of mine I knew it had to be a symphonic ballet. Coincidentally, I discovered that my favorite cartoonist, Edward Gorey, is also a balletomane. He lived in New York City between 1953 and 1986 and never missed a single performance of the New York City Ballet. Apparently his leaving New York to live permanently on Cape Cod was prompted by the death of George Balanchine in 1983. Among Edward Gorey's many books there is one, The Gilded Bat, about a young woman, Maud Splaytoe, and her adventures in the ballet world. She dies in the end when the plane she is in flies into a great, dark bird. Hmmm, I thought, The Gilded Bat would make a nice adagio movement. To complete the work, I found four other Gorey books that attracted me in mood and texture: The Nursery Frieze - dogs running across the edge of a nursery ceiling, barking out words whose sequence provides no sense or meaning, e.g., Archipelago, cardamon, obloquy, ignavia, samisen, bandages, wax, Gavelkind, ... ; The Raging Tide - a fantastical story about four creatures, Figbash, Hooglyboo, Naeelah and Skrump, who would not stop abusing each other; The Utter Zoo - an alphabet book of zoo animals of Edward Gorey's concoction, e.g., Ampoo, Boggerslosh, Crunk, Dawbis, Epitwee, ... ; and The Blue Aspic - a macabre story of a mad fan, Jasper Ankle, who stalks an opera diva, Ortenzia Caviglia. When he finally meets her at the stage-door after a performance, he stabs her in the throat and cries, J'ai trouvé Hortense! Symphony No. 2 ... A Phantasmagorey Ballet is in five movements: I. The Nursery Frieze, Con moto. II. The Gilded Bat Adagio: Pas seul for Mirella Splatova, aka Maud SplaytoeIII. The Raging Tide Presto: Pas de Quatre for Figbash, Hooglyboo, Naeelah and Skrump. IV. C naturals].

Guren no Yumiya (Japanese: 紅蓮の弓矢, lit. Crimson Bow and Arrow) is one of two songs created by the Japanese band Linked Horizon for the double A-side track of their three-track single Jiyū e no Shingeki. The full version of the song was released by Pony Canyon on 10 July 2013, and would be most notable for its use as the first intro to the anime Attack on Titan.The song was the first anime theme the band Linked Horizon would create, being composed using a blend of musical genres as well as Japanese and German language lyrics. Since first being used in the anime, the song has had multiple musical artists perform cover versions of the song, and has been played most notably at the 64th NHK Kōhaku Uta Gassen and during major sporting events in Japan, including at the 2020 Summer Olympics. The song would reach the number one spot on the Billboard Japan Hot 100 and Hot Animation charts upon its debut, and would receive four awards for its melody and animation by the end of 2013. In May 2014, Guren no Yumiya earned a RIAJ 2x Platinum certification for half a million sales.This arrangement requires a large orchestra.

Scenes from the Sea is a suite in five movements for full orchestra, each of which lasts approximately three minutes, except for the last movement which lasts five minutes. Movement One, entitled Schools of Fish, is a brisk opener that symbolizes the sea as a whole, teeming with life. Movement Two is called Shipwrecks. The music is contemplative and represents the multitude of ships that rest at the bottom of the sea, many of which are the graves of brave sailors. Movement Three is a march called Fighting Crabs, and is about two crabs who fight to the death for food. In Movement Four, The Abyss, the listener descends to the depths, whereupon he/she finds a peaceful rest. The last movement, A Squall, begins calmly, but a foreboding storm in the distance threatens to takes away the calm. The Navy Hymn, Eternal Father, Strong to Save, is heard just before the storm strikes. Finally, the calmness returns and the piece ends triumphantly. Scores and parts are included for full orchestra, including piano. Full program notes are available from the composer.
