Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.1036106). Below is a description of Volume 2 of Orchestral Excerpts for Tuba with Piano accompaniment arranged by Japanese Tubist Takahiro Kim. This new edition includes the following music: Piano accompaniments to the orchestral excerpts from major works for Tuba. This edition does not include a separate Tuba (the tuba part is in the piano accompaniment part though), however, if the performer needs these parts, they are readily available in the Complete Collection of Low Brass Orchestra Music compiled by Gordon Cherry. Many tuba players (at any level) will play in an orchestra or practice the tuba part of a piece as part of their studies. You will also have the opportunity to listen to reference recordings and study those pieces. In this textbook, I have arranged the tuba part so that it can be played with piano accompaniment. Some pieces are difficult to understand from the orchestral soundtrack alone. I have transcribed the piano part as simply as possible. By doing so, you will be able to clearly understand the relationship between the phrases, accompaniment patterns, harmonies, rhythms, and the relationship between the tuba part and the orchestra. I have included many parts other than the ones to be played in the audition pieces. This is because I want you to practice with a strong image of the musicality and sound feeling used in those pieces. I think you will be able to fully understand the outline of the music. Bruckner: Symphony No. 4-9 - You may only have the opportunity to practice the sections for auditions, such as No. 4 (4th movement) and No. 7 (4th movement). However, by practicing other sections as well, you will be able to study the ideal style, sounds, and harmonies that are appropriate for Bruckner's symphonies. By referring to the piano part, you will be able to understand the harmony very quickly. Mendelssohn: A Midsummer Night’s Dream Overture - If you have a chance to practice with a pianist, try practicing at a slower tempo so that you can visualize the ideal tone and nuance of articulation for bass tuba while feeling the harmonic background of the piano playing. Of course, mp3 files will also help you. Mussorgsky: Pictures at an Exhibition - Each section is very unique, so it is best to practice with a clear purpose. In Bydlo, everything is arranged for concert use. So it will be possible to play it in a real concert or orchestral situation. If you play with the accompaniment in mind, your approach to the phrases will surely change. I recommend that you practice all sections of Pictures at an Exhibition with a pianist at a slow tempo. When you listen to recordings or practice by yourself, it may be difficult to pay attention to each harmony. Knowing a clear harmonic standard will help you take your sound and articulation in a more ideal direction.

This 4-part suite is called Serenade in A. This name, chosen by its author, completely exhausts the content of this music and emphasizes the main idea of the composition, as well as the tonality of all parts. Each part provides comprehensive details in this series and has its own title. I emphasize that this is by no means a programmatic essay. The nature of each part and their internal content pushed me to follow my interpretation of each part in the orchestral transcription. 1. Hymne is essentially nothing more than a Hymn of love! His character, sublime above the everyday, is, as it were, raised to the surface and presented in bright, broad strokes as an irrefutable truth. 2. Romanza - I perceive it as a kind of parody of a love romance with the main sentiments and elements inherent in this genre. This is by no means a refutation of love, but only some irony over the false, pretentious way of expressing this feeling. The grotesque character is emphasized whenever possible by the orchestration. 3. Rondoletto - this part, from the very beginning in my orchestration, resembles the multi-voiced play of musicians preparing to play, testing the sound of their instruments, tuning them and playing out. 4. Cadenza Finala - the nature of the music is the union and rapture of love. In my orchestration there can be traced duets of various instruments and orchestra groups such as: a pair of Flutes, a pair of Oboes, Clarinets, Trumpets, Trombones, 1st and 2nd Violins. This feature of the pairs I have chosen should emphasize their relationship and relatedness.

We Want To Play A Plena! It is a single-movement piece for the Symphony Youth Orchestra by Composer William Pagán-Pérez. The piece is in the key of D Major. Composer Pagán-Pérez followed some teachings organized in Volume I of the Suzuki Methods to compose the piece for the string sections and a 2 or 2.5 grade level for the wind and brass instruments. The key of D Major can be a challenge for the winds and brass (especially for clarinets and trumpets in Bb), but music teachers, conductors, and students will manage the challenges by practicing scales and arpeggios. The Plena is a music genre or a rhythm from the south of Puerto Rico (a territory of the United State in the Caribbean). Percussion students can learn the basic patterns by reading the music notation or by ear (it is very repetitive). As is my usual style, I tend to allow the second players and less-prominent instruments a chance to shine, and in general shake up the usual orchestral hierarchy. (The second violins, for example, even get their own solo passage!)The wind parts are much more individualized, where the first part may have a completely different line than the second.A colleague who is a trombone player challenged me to write parts that sing for his instrument; hence the word dolce occurs in the low brass parts. The orchestral parts of the Third Symphony (2000, revised 2023), an ambitious, modernist/neoclassical composition for orchestra and chorus with four vocal soloists. It may represent a search for harmony within and/or without and is a huge, subtle variations form on a theme that appears clearly and in full only in the Finale.The chromatic, first movement (Andante maestoso) begins mysteriously with A's in the unaccompanied violins, like a tuning or a seed of what is to come. These A's are adorned with oscillations which gradually become wider leaps until they reach the fifth (as in the beginning of the future full theme), and the other instruments join gradually. The mood is dark, tragic, pensive, and somehow abstract, as the music wanders in an almost improvisatory manner through chromatic modes and goes crescendo-decrescendo back again to the bare, cryptic A's.The energetic second movement (Allegro) is an enormous scherzo toying with the second melodic cell of the full theme, a descending tetrachord. This vital, Dionysian frenzy (in strong contrast to the Apollonian, severe contemplation in the first movement) leads only to its exhaustion and to the disorientated, slow Trio: first, an almost atonal tenor monologue accompanied by harp (on verses from Dante's Purgatory), then a quotation from Beethoven's sketches for a planned overture on the B-A-C-H motif, followed by a fugal section on the same archetypal motif and again a tenor monologue (on verses from Eminescu's Satire No. 4), this time with organ accompaniment and more and more tortured until the choral exclamations and the final cymbal clash. The search seemed in vain, so the rhythmic fury of the scherzo returns, but in mirror, as minor modes replaced the major ones on the same material.The Finale (Larghetto-Allegro-Larghetto) was inspired by the last scene in Goethe's Faust, part 2. These studies are specifically designed for non-professional orchestras, although any orchestra will improve by playing some of these pieces during rehearsals. It is always necessary to pay attention to intonation and many other aspects of orchestral performance.In addition, these studies are also useful for orchestral conducting students. For example, it is essential to know how to conduct a simultaneous attack of a chord that does not begin on the first beat, but a eighth note after the third beat.I began writing these studies around 2013, when I took over the direction of the Bremer Orchestergemeinschaft and noticed the complete absence of repertoire of this kind. As a pianist, I am accustomed to studies by Carl Czerny or playing scales. Each individual instrumentalist knows studies of technique for their instrument. However, there are no, or at least I am not aware of, similar studies for orchestral performance technique and the specific difficulties of ensemble playing that it requires. The cycle Orchestraining aims to fill this gap.The particular study Orchestraining Nr. 01 focuses on the subject of simultaneous attacks, presenting a series of staccato chords in different parts of the bar. The piece will be played twice, with different dynamics and (partly) different performing techniques (particularly in the strings: pizzicato vs. arco).Orchestraining No. 01 - simultaneous attacks*Orchestraining es un ciclo de estudios orquestales, cada uno de los cuales tematiza diferentes aspectos de la ejecución. Estos estudios están concebidos especÃficamente para orquestas no profesionales; sin embargo, cualquier orquesta mejorará si toca alguna de estas piezas durante los ensayos. Siempre es necesario cuidar la afinación y muchos otros aspectos de la ejecución orquestal.Adicionalmente, estos estudios son también útiles para estudiantes de dirección orquestal. Flute Concerto (2006) was commissioned by flutist Judith von Hopf and theKiev Philharmonic and premiered by them under the direction of GuidoLamell. The work is in two movements: Chanson and Fantasy Variations.The first movement, Chanson, is an extended “song†that develops through avariety of textures. The opening song material is centered around G#. In turn,this G# is revealed to be a quasi-dominant of a D centered sonority. (A briefcoda returns to G#, in preparation for the D center of the second movement.)The second movement, Fantasy Variations, is cast as two presentations ofthe theme surrounding five free variations, plus a coda. The theme serves asthe basis of the musical material for each variation as well as the structuraltemplate for each. Also, each variation contains material referring backspecifically to the previous variation.The opening theme is declamatory and massive. The first variation is fastand limber. The second variation is introspective and stratified. The thirdvariation is fleeting. The fourth variation is distant and spare. The fifthvariation is fast and driving. The final theme begins whispered and slowlyregains its declamatory nature before a brief and intense coda ends the workin a blaze.This item is the score and the solo part only. I continue to take classes three or four times a week. It's fun, athletic, and challenging. And I'm still working on the basic notion of spotting in my pirouettes ... So when Max Hobart of the Civic Symphony Orchestra of Boston agreed to premiere a new work of mine I knew it had to be a symphonic ballet. Coincidentally, I discovered that my favorite cartoonist, Edward Gorey, is also a balletomane. He lived in New York City between 1953 and 1986 and never missed a single performance of the New York City Ballet. Apparently his leaving New York to live permanently on Cape Cod was prompted by the death of George Balanchine in 1983. Among Edward Gorey's many books there is one, The Gilded Bat, about a young woman, Maud Splaytoe, and her adventures in the ballet world. She dies in the end when the plane she is in flies into a great, dark bird. Hmmm, I thought, The Gilded Bat would make a nice adagio movement. To complete the work, I found four other Gorey books that attracted me in mood and texture: The Nursery Frieze - dogs running across the edge of a nursery ceiling, barking out words whose sequence provides no sense or meaning, e.g., Archipelago, cardamon, obloquy, ignavia, samisen, bandages, wax, Gavelkind, ... ; The Raging Tide - a fantastical story about four creatures, Figbash, Hooglyboo, Naeelah and Skrump, who would not stop abusing each other; The Utter Zoo - an alphabet book of zoo animals of Edward Gorey's concoction, e.g., Ampoo, Boggerslosh, Crunk, Dawbis, Epitwee, ... ; and The Blue Aspic - a macabre story of a mad fan, Jasper Ankle, who stalks an opera diva, Ortenzia Caviglia. When he finally meets her at the stage-door after a performance, he stabs her in the throat and cries, J'ai trouvé Hortense! Symphony No. 2 ... A Phantasmagorey Ballet is in five movements: I. The Nursery Frieze, Con moto. II. The Gilded Bat Adagio: Pas seul for Mirella Splatova, aka Maud SplaytoeIII. The Raging Tide Presto: Pas de Quatre for Figbash, Hooglyboo, Naeelah and Skrump. IV. To play it is to be taken inside a sound world greater than the instrument itself. In other words, it seems to demand orchestration. Whether the fanfare call of Puckâ??s Dance, the sotto voce flurries evoking The Wind Over The Plains, or the deepest and highest reaches of the musical spectrum explored in the under-water world of The Sunken Cathedral, Debussyâ??s music seems to drop hints at obvious orchestral manoeuvres. His great skill, of course, was condensing these musical ideas to the piano. But the fruit is there fo the taking, and indeed other orchestrations exist of the complete suite of piano preludes â?? Books I and II. So, why another?This particular suite cherry-picks some of my own favourite movements from the suite, and arranges them in a â??symphonicâ?? structure to present an opening, expository movement (The Wind Over The Plains), a romantic Adagio (The Girl With The Flaxen Hair), a sprightly â??scherzoâ?? (Puckâ??s Dance), concluding with an epic finale (The Sunken Cathedral).
