Published by Brock Lupton (A0.942412). This is one of the lesser-known works of composer Robert Schumann. It was composed in 1849 and introduced in Leipzig on February 25, 1850. There are several possible reasons for the comparative unfamiliarity of this work which, despite its modest title, is a full-fledged 3-movement concerto for four very accomplished French horn players with orchestra. In its original configuration, the work exploits the newly-invented valved French horn. (The horn and trumpet were natural instruments – like today’s bugles, with no valves – until about 1835.) The concerto establishes a festive character at the outset, and becomes almost feverish as the excitement expands. The slow movement (Romanze) typifies another side of the composer, expansive and tender. It leads directly into the third (final) movement which brings together the various elements in an outburst of sheer joy.The title to which this note is attached is my re-orchestration of the accompaniment (score and all orchestral parts). Three different ensemble versions are also available from SMP. Any of these is compatible with the orchestral score and parts.

Watercolors of Earth and Sky is a work that celebrates the beauty and opportunity of nature through four musical movements. This work is for violin and harp (or piano). The violin part incorporates special techniques that help shape the sound and overall texture of the work. Each of the four movements presents an aspect of the composer’s experience in parks, plains, and woodlands. The music is also colored by the composer’s work as a performer of both classical and jazz music. As with other compositions by Jeffrey Hoover, there is a series of four paintings by Hoover with the same titles that are visual interpretations of the music. Images of these paintings that can be projected in performance are available directly from Hoover. This work is appropriate for performance for a broad audience.Jeffrey Hoover's works - ranging from music for soloist to symphony orchestra - have received recognition through the prestigious Trieste prize, the Russolo Competition, awards from Mu Phi Epsilon, the Lancaster Fine Arts Festival, grants, publications, fellowships, and more than 20 commissions. He is a member of the ACME roster of Mu Phi Epsilon, recognized for distinguished achievement in composition. Composed by Ian Deterling, published by Deterling Music I wrote Dwarves in 2018 for Brian Langley - a good friend and wonderful band director. One day over a cup of coffee, he suggested that I should look into writing/arranging works for Flex-Band - a way of scoring music so that ensembles that frequently have to deal with ‘incomplete’ instrumentation (‘incomplete’ as far as traditional concert band ensembles go) can still perform works with the guarantee that all the parts are covered and the ensemble is properly balanced. Dwarves is the first piece I wrote specifically for Flex-Band. This orchestral arrangement was made specifically for the Northshore Philharmonic Orchestra - Tracey Gibbens, conductor. I always find it fascinating yet challenging (in a good way) whenever I revisit a work/adapt and rewrite it for a different instrumentation. Dwarves was definitely no exception. While working on different chord voicing, counter melodies, and having the full pallet of orchestral timbres at my disposal, I decided to transpose the piece up to B Minor (original key of G Minor). I felt this added an extra degree of brilliance while allowing some melodies and musical ideas to be dropped an octave for a contrasting heavier low end. Dwarves is based primarily on two different themes - the A theme (minor and serious) and the B (major, a bit more uplifting). There is a ‘C’ section, but it is loosely based on a variation of the A theme.

I decided to take a chance by trying to do an orchestral transcription of the brilliant Arensky Piano Trio D minor op. 32, where the parts of the solo violin and cello remained in their place, and the piano part was completely replaced by the orchestra. Particular attention is paid to the balance of sound between solo instruments and the orchestra.

Contrary to most of his oeuvre, these were serious works lacking the satire, wit, and non-conformity Satie usually exhibited. Still, they are unmistakably Satie: soothing, floating, and very French. This work is a straightforward arrangement of Satie’s 4th nocturne, applying the color and dynamic ranges of the orchestra to his piano writing. Program note: My love affair with the city of Rome dates back to the year 1986-87 when I spent just under eleven months at the American Academy in Rome on a Rome Prize Fellowship. During that Fellowship year I was very much inspired by the beauty and culture of the Eternal City, which resulted in a number of works that continue to resonate with me: Twenty-nine Fireflies Book II for solo piano; Concertino for trumpet, timpani and strings; Apples … six dreams by Richard Kenney; String Quartet No 5 … Four Birthdays; and Chôrinhos … opus 38. Since 1997 my wife, Kristin Beckwith, and I have returned to the American Academy in Rome almost every year. I would compose in the morning and then my wife and I would go to our usual haunt at Bar G. for cappuccini and cornetti. And then we’d go to the local bakery and street markets and buy stuff for lunch. In the afternoon we would wander into the city to go shopping and sight-seeing. In the evenings we would dine at one of our favorite local trattorias. Life could not be better in Rome. Musically speaking, several important works in my portfolio had their beginnings during these sojourns at the Academy , among them Yo Picasso, Flauta Carioca, Mass for the Holy Year 2000, Symphony No. 5 … Utopia Parkway, Twenty-nine Fireflies Books IV & V, and Piano Concerto … Mozartiana. Just before the 2008 recession, clarinetist extraordinaire Jonathan Cohler asked me to write a symphony for the inaugural concert of a new orchestra he was planning to create. I came up with Symphony No. 7 … Roman Holidays, my give back to the city of Rome – a compendium of favorite places that continue to live in my thoughts and musings. Although the work is heard in four movements, it is actually divided into seven sections, as in the seven hills of Rome. 1. Prelude: Fontana Paola and the panoramic view of the city of Rome from that vantage point. 2. First interlude: La Befana festivities at Piazza Navona. The Protestant Cemetery in Testaccio at night under a full moon. 3. Second interlude: Fontana delle Tartughe in the Jewish Ghetto. Bernini’s Apollo and Daphne at the Galleria Borghese. 4. Third interlude: Bernini’s Beata Ludovica Albertoni in Trastevere. The Spanish Steps and the view of Rome from the French Academy at Villa Medici. NB: Unfortunately, thanks to the recession, Roman Holidays never saw the light of day. This year (2013) I decided to revisit the work, which lay dormant for 5 five years, and saw that it could use a little tweaking. The new version is essentially the same, musically speaking. I reduced the orchestration a bit (two horns instead of four, and two trumpets instead of three) and added more heft to the lower brass. I completely rewrote the tune for the floating foreign ghosts at the Protestant Cemetery. I also shortened the work by about three minutes by cutting some repeats. A simple march and trio for orchestra, Grades 2-5, with parts for all orchestral instruments including all saxes and pianoforte. Also works for British brass band. I composed this for the Eclectic Ensemble in Hull when it was formed in 2022. DURATION: 2 minutes. INSTRUMENTATION: FLEXIBLE ORCHESTRA This will work as long as Parts A, B and C are covered. I have supplied Parts A, B and C for treble clef instruments in C, Bb and Eb; instruments in F; Viola; and for bass clef instruments. Timps, Snare Drum and Other Percussion. Keyboard or Harp part is harder, but covers all three lines. The Eb parts A and B are rather high for beginner brass. The Director can conduct from the score or lead from the keyboard part.

German-born composer Emilie Mayer (1812-1882) wrote and published music during a time period that was challenging for a female composer. Doing so under the long shadows of Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven complicated the situation, yet Mayer prospered and was quite successful during her lifetime. Sadly, despite this early success, her works have not received the number of performances they deserve. Faust Overture, premiered shortly before Mayer’s death, is by far her most successful orchestral work. In it, one can clearly hear the influence of Beethoven. This edition is based entirely on Mayer’s 1880 publication. It is highly edited including an update to modern instrumentation and the addition of missing/ inconsistent dynamics and articulations. As with all Zephyrwindmusic publications, parts come with an Unlimited Copy License, thus removing any potential copyright issues. Parts can be used in analog form – printed on paper – or uploaded as a digital part onto a reading device such as an iPad for performance.
