Juan Maria Solare #4408887. Published by Juan Maria Solare (A0.596550). Blues en mà [Blues in E / Blues in me] for piano. Composed in Worpswede (Germany) from 9th to18th October 2001. Dedicated to Hans-Dieter Ludwig (H.D.). Duration: 3'20. First performance by the composer at the Music Hall in Worpswede on 3rd May 2002. This concert was filmed by Reinhard Hölker, who also held a scholarship at the Künstlerhäuser Worpswede. The Argentine first performance was given by Cecilia Strack on 17th December 2003 at the Conservatorio de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires, during a monographic concert (Compositions for Piano by Juan MarÃa Solare) organised by the Professors Silvia Dabul and Manuel Massone. The title is a pan in Spanish: Blues in E minor / Blues in me. At some moment I had a dream related with this piece. I cannot recall exactly when or where, but it must have been during 2003; any case not later. Possibly I've written it down somewhere, I will find it. Reconstructed by memory: It was an open-air concert, maybe in Worpswede. The audience sits down in banks around tables, eating; it is a kind of party. A music sounds that comes familiar to me. I recognized the Blues en mÃ. A young lady is performing it, whom I don't absolutely know. I ask myself: How could this lady get the score? She have possibly found it on the internet. And actually it was this dream that ended up convincing me to put some of my scores in Internet, beginning with the Blues en mÃ. According to my registers, I sent the sheet music to Mariano Rocca (webmaster of compositores e intérpretes, www.ciweb.com.ar) on 2nd November 2003 (ergo, this dream must have occurred before). I got the Burnt Toast Blues - oh yeah!...Burnt Toast Blues is a catchy swing number for beginner (primo) players at about the Grade 1 (ABRSM) standard.The primo player starts off the whole piece with a 3 quaver 'pickup' into the melody, which is written in treble and bass clefs - but played two octaves higher.The written quaver quarter-notes are swung in the jazz style and there are some syncopated rhythms to keep you on your toes. Try saying badoo-bedoooooo-bee-doo and you'll get the idea!Burnt Toast Blues comes with a playalong swing backing track to accompany the primo player. This track has bass, drums and guitar 'rhythm' section plus the secondo part and is also available on Sheet Music Plus.Watch out for the dynamics (mp on the repeat) and also the staccato and accented notes, which will help the swing rhythm to 'swing'. Published by Philip Le Bas (A0.1127872). Incidental music composed for piano duet (4-hands) in four parts by Philip Le Bas to accompany the Japanese folk tale (ghost story) Yuki-Onna (Snow Woman). This piano duet developed out of a cross-cultural project initiated at Morley College, London, in early 2019, aiming to create a melodrama for piano solo and spoken voice to be performed in northern Japan later in the year by young students of the piano. It is based on the ghost-story above, which is widely known in Japan. The tale was transcribed and published by Lafcadio Hearn (Koizumi Yakumo) in 1904 as part of his book “Kwaidan: Stories and Studies of Strange Thingsâ€, a collection that has been highly influential in expressing popular Japanese culture over the past century. Synopsis of the tale of Yuki-Onna: Two wood-cutters, Mosaku and his apprentice Minokichi, encounter a terrible snow-storm and take shelter in an empty hut by a river. The storm gets worse and worse, but they both finally fall asleep. When Minokichi wakes, he sees a woman all in white bending over Mosaku breathing bright white smoke onto his face. She then approaches Minokichi. She is very beautiful, but her eyes make him afraid. After a while she says, “I intended to do the same to you as I did to the old man, but I feel pity for you because you are a pretty young man. If you ever tell anybody what you have seen, however, I will kill you too.†And she vanishes into the snow storm. It is then that Minokichi discovers Mosaku dead on the floor of the hut. Years later Minokichi meets a beautiful girl, who calls herself O-Yuki. He falls in love with her and they live together in his house, along with his mother, who fortunately takes a liking to her new “honourable daughter-in-law.†Over the years O-Yuki gives birth to ten children and the villagers all agree that she is a wonderful person. But she is somehow different from them, as she continues to look young and fresh, despite the passing years. Minokichi often thinks of telling O-Yuki about the events of years ago, and eventually, as he is gazing at her beauty one night, he can resist it no more. He begins to tell her about the snow storm and the terrifying snow-woman. To his horror O-Yuki becomes more and more angry, and she finally says: “It was me, it was me,… and I said I would kill you if you ever told anyone! But for these children asleep here, I would do so this very moment! The theme is quiet and simple, yet as the variations begin adding rhythms, melodies and textures, various musical styles, characters and dramatic expressions appear. When certain variations take on characteristics of jazz or salsa, audience members might even forget that they are still hearing the same basic chord structure. This piece is written so that almost any number of players can take turns performing it on either one, or two pianos. When fewer players perform the piece, one pianist can play two or three of the easier parts simultaneously. The minimum number of performers needed is four, but to facilitate the playing of cross rhythms, some groups may prefer 5 or 6 players in some variations. The music is written on 5 separate staves with suggestions of where and how to rotate players in and out of the performance, but performers should feel free to divide the parts between themselves in any way that works for them. Starting off slow and daunting at first, with shifts and odd dynamics and rhythms as you just allow yourself to fall into this new feeling. Then, the piece takes off. With confusing chords, a ground bass but always a visible motet. The ground bass always sounds like it may rush, like any second the pianist could speed up and leave the other pianist behind but it never does. The voices often trade parts and dance back and forth. With the treble line taking off suddenly, ending the ground bass line. The last section has question chords, and unresolved lines as a relationship starts to lose the new lover buzz and falls into a steady rhythm. Some may feel that the relationship is ending, that the two pianos don’t sound the same as they used to together. But really the two pianos have found their music. They don’t need to experiment with different rhythms, keys, or time signatures. They know what sounds good together, they can continue to make music forever.
