COMPOSER’S NOTESFinding Time To Dance is a piece that is dedicated to the Department of Dance at Chapman University. The piece is found in a world of high rhythmical contrast and virtuosic playing, especially on the part of the percussionist. The idea for this piece comes from wanting to fade varied rhythmic groups with a Klezmer style of violin playing. After working through the piece, what I found most exciting is the absolute wonkiness that it has in every section. As the piece develops in time, the sense of meter becomes less concrete.

He, at present, resides in his home state of Massachusetts where he is a performer, writer, and private educator in music to students online and offline. Performance Notes: Ornamentation is to be performed in a free manner, except when otherwise stated in the score. Program Notes: Scherzo and Trio, Nightmares in Dreamland, for Solo Violin that follows the Classical period form of a Minuet and Trio. It has the Romantic period spirit of a Scherzo and Trio, hence the title. It has the Romantic period ideal, in it being programmatic, hence the subtitle. And, it has a melodic as well as implied harmonic language that is a fusion of Classical and Jazz of the 20th and 21st centuries. The work tells a definitive tale, despite being in a strict form. It answers the question of what dreamland would sound like for a person when infected with nightmares. Be prepared to toss and turn, as we enter the human mind after it has had a long and hard morning, afternoon, and evening.

Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.533566). The Doors in the Sky (2007) for violin commissioned by and is dedicated to violinist PiotrSzewczyk. It was written as a part of his ViolinFutura commissioning project. The missionof the project seeks to commission pieces connected to the deep historical traditions ofsolo violin literature. The work takes its inspiration thus from these historical works and alsofrom a brief poem by American poet Elizabeth Kirschner.The work begins with slow, melodic music in firm tonality. A fast, dancing section emergesand becomes gradually wilder – abandoning its tonal grounding through chromaticalternation. After this fast music stops, the initial slow music returns to conclude the piece,with darker interjections now inserted into the tonal texture before ending in quiet repose.

Villa-Lobos composed Chôros No. 1 in Rio de Janeiro in 1920, originally publishing it under the title Chôro tÃpico, then Chôro tÃpico brasileiro. The title is taken from an improvisational genre of Brazilian instrumental popular music that originated in Rio de Janeiro in the nineteenth century. The Portuguese word choro, means cry or lament, though most music of this type is far from being sorrowful. Four years after composing this work, at the time of his first visit to Paris, he decided to make it part of an extended cycle of works collectively titled Chôros, which eventually included fourteen numbered compositions, plus an Introduction aux chôros (Introdução aos chôros): Ouverture, for guitar and orchestra, designed to be played before a complete performance of the cycle, and Chôros bis, a two-movement duo for violin and cello, considered as a sort of encore piece. A Quintet (em forma de chôros), for five woodwind instruments (1928) is sometimes considered as related.In the context of the larger cycle, Chôros No. 1 is like the essence, the embryo, the psychological model that will be developed technically in the conception of all the Chôros (Villa-Lobos 1972, 210).The score of Chôros No. 1 is dedicated to Ernesto Nazareth, and a recording of it made by the composer lasts just under four minutes. Unlike the successor works, there is no attempt here to synthesize different aspects of Brazilian music into a stylistic montage. Instead, it employs the patterns, figurations, and simple structure characteristic of the improvised music of such celebrated chorões of the late-nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as Zequinha de Abreu, Quincas Laranjeiras [pt], Chiquinha Gonzaga, and Catulo da Paixão Cearense [pt] (Wright 1992, 62) This simplicity and the beauty of its composition have made it a favourite with professional guitarists (Appleby 2002, 80).Originally for Guitar, adapted for Solo Violin by Inacio Saldanha. Elijah Jovan McClain (February 25, 1996 – August 30, 2019) was a 23-year-old African-American massage therapist from Aurora, Colorado who was murdered after being placed in a chokehold by police and being sedated by paramedics. On August 24, 2019, an Aurora citizen reported to police that McClain was wearing a ski mask and looked sketchy, although the caller also indicated that he did not believe anyone was in danger, and that he believed McClain was unarmed.  The three police officers who were involved in the incident, Nathan Woodyard, Jason Rosenblatt and Randy Roedema, said that their body cameras were knocked off during a struggle with McClain. McClain was forcibly held to the ground with his hands cuffed behind his back, after which an officer applied a chokehold and paramedics administered ketamine to McClain to sedate him.  While being transported to the hospital McClain went into cardiac arrest. Three days after arriving at the hospital he was declared brain dead, and he was removed from life support on August 30. McClain's autopsy was inconclusive. Duration: 4:30 This work makes extensive use of easy double stops on the violin.

I wrote this piece as I was trying to figure out all the harmonics on the violin on a hot day in June 1999. The first section represents all the cars that I heard in the morning rush hour on their way to work on that hot summer day driving up route 1, route 1A, and route 95. Section A represents all those people busy at work in the morning trying to turn the world upside down. First the melody is right side up, then it is upside down. They're in air conditioned buildings of course! Then the opening section gets played once again, this time representing everyone going out in the hot weather for lunch and to do a few errands as fast as possible. Next comes section B. If one wants to leave out the bottom harmonic at the beginning of the measures 1, 2, & 3, in lines 1, 3 and 4, that makes it a little easier, but it is nice when both notes can be played. This section is work after lunch. It is supposed to go a little slower, for everyone is getting bogged down with to many assignments and they're starting to get exhausted. Then comes the opening section one last time. This time it is rush hour on the way home, and all the errands that must be done, like taking kids to soccer practice, ballet , tap dancing and violin lessons(or whatever) and trying to fix dinner or grab a pizza somewhere in there. Just before getting to the end of the section this time at the sign jump to the coda, and here it can slow down just a little for this is one collapsing at the end of the day when everything is over.

Key: D major.It was the Devil's Trill Sonata that immortalized Giuseppe Tartini (1692-1770) although said work is just one of a vast number of concertos and sonatas for strings and especially for his instrument, the violin. The present 'Sonata in Re maggiore per Violino solo' is a technically demanding, yet not cluttered work. The slow movements, the introductory Andante cantabile and the Largo headed TASSO, composed over the melody of a Venetian gondola song, give the soloist the opportunity for cantabile playing. The playful Minuetto clearly breathes the spirit of the post-Baroque era while the Allegro assai coming second mixes strongly gripping passages with beguilingly sentimental ones. The characteristic ambiguous movement is repeated after the Minuetto, thus completing the solo sonata.

When I studied violin, it was strictly a solitary experience. I played by myself, or with my teacher accompanying me; everything I learned – sonatas, concertos, concert pieces – were for solo violin. True, I played in an orchestra, and when I was in high school found my way into a beginning string quartet, but all of my experience with violin pedagogy was solitaire. When I started teaching, I adopted a completely different approach. I believe that music is a social, not a solitary activity. So the first piece my students learn is a duet. And everything thereafter involves playing and learning in groups. These two games are part of a larger work presenting my approach to teaching. It is a work in progress, and I hope to be adding organically to it as my experience grows. Toccata aims to showcase the performer’s virtuosity in a numerous amount of ways. The piece opens with a sixthteenth note pattern that is the core of the work, and expands upon the pattern implementing various harmonic changes throughout. In the middle of the piece a theme is presented in 4/4 time which gives way to high scalar runs which is interrupted by the beginning pattern and repeated over again. After this, there is a return of the beginning idea, which is taken through several different keys until arriving in G minor. At the end of the piece the theme from the middle is presented in its full glory, and in 3/4. The piece closes with a G minor chord being built from the bottom up and added portamento before the final chord.

This work begins with virtuoso flourishes by the violin punctuated by the piano until the violin and piano join together sounding like one instrument. After a section featuring several dialogues between the two instruments the piano assumes the virtuoso role with the violin providing the punctuations. A quasi cadenza joins the two instruments until the violin again assumes the role of soloist with a virtuoso flourish for both at the end. There are many changes of tempos and changes of moods and there is both written and spatial notation. The duration is ca. 10 minutes. This is a manuscript score, thus the reduced price.

Etch was completed shortly after finishing work on the String Quartet No. 1 Apophis. This solo piece for violin (or viola) borrows material from the quartet and further develops it. Another interest in writing this piece was to create more compositions for solo instrumentalists. The title Etch refers to the sound of the opening motive of a ninth using the open G string of the violin (or the open C of the viola).

The world premiere took place in Berlin in 1983, shortly after the Israeli composer had come to Germany from her home country to study on a scholarship. In this early creative period, her tonal language shows the slow introduction of the sound of new music. In 2015, Czernowin also arranged the piece for viola solo and for violoncello solo.
