Alexander Burdissfor String Quartet Performance Time: approx. 9:30Dedicated to 于倩Reflections is a work for string quartet that embodies the ambiguity of human memory, and reflections upon those memories. A theme is played, and when it is repeated it isn’t quite how you remembered it. The whole work is also in a rondo form, where the second half of the piece mirrors the first half. The mirror in the middle of the work is also a reflection of the original theme, but shown in a new harmonic context, showing how a memory can be seen in very different lights depending on how it is framed. Overall, the work tries to capture how ambiguous our memories and thoughts can be, and intrigue the listener with the same kind of wonder that so frequently enthralls the composer.

This is not my first string quartet, but I think this is great program music; the titles of the movements (One of Those Daze, Reflections, Good Times) speak for themselves. The first movement explores rhythms and different meters (same pulse). The second movement is calming and reflective, like a prayer. The third movement is euphoric and probably the easiest one to play, which can be welcome if your group is giving a concert. Needless to say, the two outer movements are good for gigs such as receptions and parties. The score and each part is included in one PDF. Audio will be forthcoming upon being recorded.

Designed for those times when a short, reflective musical interlude is needed, this selection takes less than one minute to perform (for a longer performance, this piece can easily be repeated). This gently flowing arrangement is ideal for filling those moments during or after a prelude, offertory, invitation, or communion, and equally suited for a wedding ceremony or reception. This is a straight-forward arrangement suitable for beginner to early intermediate string players with all notes playable in the first two positions. The Cello and Violin 1 parts are slightly more challenging than the Viola and Violin 2 parts, but all parts provide an excellent opportunity for mastering tone and vibrato as well as experimenting with various slurring techniques. It was written by George Harrison and is one of his best-known compositions. Harrison wrote the song in early 1969 at the country house of his friend Eric Clapton, where Harrison had chosen to play truant for the day to avoid attending a meeting at the Beatles' Apple Corps organisation.The Beatles recorded Here Comes the Sun at London's EMI Studios in the summer of 1969. Led by Harrison's acoustic guitar, the track features a Moog synthesizer, which he had introduced to the band's sound after acquiring an early model of the instrument in California. Reflecting the continued influence of Indian classical music on Harrison's writing, the composition includes several time signature changes. Here Comes the Sun has received acclaim from music critics. Combined with his other contribution to Abbey Road, Something, it gained for Harrison the level of recognition as a songwriter previously reserved for his bandmates John Lennon and Paul McCartney. Here Comes the Sun was the track used to promote the 50th anniversary reissue of Abbey Road in 2019. It peaked at number 3 on the US Billboard Hot Rock Songs chart at that time and has since been certified double platinum for UK sales since 2010. Tchaikovsky's Serenade for Strings in C Major was written with an ear towards one of his idols, a certain 18th century composer by the name of Mozart. The title and structure of the piece are taken from the serenades of the latter, though this is certainly Tchaikovsky's own particularly 19th century rendering of these older ideas. That it is a masterful work, is demonstrated by the fact that it still remains among the most performed and appreciated by the public alongside the serenades by AntonÃn Dvořák and Josef Suk. The second movement is a gracious waltz that updates the requisite dance movement (which in Mozart's time would have been a stately minuet) to a more contemporary dance form. In any case, the waltz is almost deceptively complex. The harmonic shifts are numerous and often sudden and always deftly crafted. The texture is somewhat of a departure from the previous movement in that there is a discernible lightness of touch in the waltz. This arrangement for string quartet (Violin I, Violin II, Viola, Cello) reflects faithfully the original and is suitable for classroom, repertoire and recital.
