The Fallen – Flute Concerto (score – flute and string orchestra) MO163AScore in Three Movements (parts available)Music by Mark O’Connor44 pages - 18:00 minutes in length The Fallen for flute solo and strings composed by Mark O’Connor in three movements was commissioned by two different flutists for their respective music festivals in the summer of 2003; Marya Martin for the 20th anniversary of her Bridghampton Festival in New York, and Beth Ross-Buckley at her Camarada Festival in San Diego. The compositional process for the piece began for O’Connor in 2003, the very day the war was launched in Iraq. The piece was finished about three weeks later around the time the statues of the Iraqi dictator fell in Baghdad. This music is a reflection of the people who lost their lives in the war. This particular impact on his music makes for quite a different result from O’Connor’s usual optimism. However he finds a way to weave in a sense of a better future in the third movement. By transforming the tragic and darker qualities of the first movement’s themes, and making a departure from the quirky feet on the ground playfulness of the second movement, here O’Connor yearns and urges for a more beautiful world. Published by Joel Jacklich (A0.723064). His is an arrangement by the composer of his Rondo in A minor (originally written for Guitar and Orchestra) for Cello and Orchestra. There is also a version arranged for Viola and Orchestra. In October, 2014, after my most recent commission, the creative juices were still flowing, and I felt the urge to write a work for guitar and orchestra (which I had always wanted to do, partly inspired by the memories Pepe Romero's performances with my orchestra forty years earlier). Amazingly, within two days I had, except for a few minor corrections, a completed work. The result was the Rondo in A minor for Guitar and Orchestra, which I dedicated to my friend, Sir Pepe Romero, with the greatest respect and admiration. In December of 2014, I realized the work was easily accessible for either viola or cello and created versions of the piece for solo cello and orchestra, and also a version for solo viola and orchestra. The work is rondo-like in form, but does not strictly follow all the rules. The form of the work is a kind of a musical palindrome: A B A C A D A C A B A (including a cadenza in the final rondo statement). The presence of castanets gives the work a bit of a Spanish flair. The piece is scored for pairs of flutes, oboes, clarinets in A, bassoons, horns, and trumpets in C; with timpani, castanets, and strings (8,8,5,5,3). Parts for clarinets and trumpets in B-flat are included in the set for those orchestras lacking clarinets in A or trumpets in C.

Although Bertold Hummel composed this Scherzo for bassoon and chamber orchestra more than fifty years ago, the piece still captivates every listener with its youthful, carefree liveliness. Virtuoso and witty, it does justice to its title in every respect. It was created in 1957 upon commission of the Kleines Unterhaltungsorchester Südwestfunk Baden-Baden. The solo part of the four-minute concert piece with the tempo indication 'allegro molto' was tailor-made by Hummel for the orchestra's principal bassoonist Helmut Böker. In addition to the hire material, a piano score with solo part is now available on sale.

It is published in the original edition (for seven players, three spoken parts, and a single dancer) and as a trio version for clarinet, violin, and piano scored by the composer. It is also frequently performed as a concert suite using the original instrumentation. Although the concert suite is in many respects identical to the original, it omits several movements as well as small sections within some movements where spoken parts with music occur. This new edition is intended to eliminate any confusion as to what music should be included or eliminated in order to create a more deï¬nitive concert suite. Fortunately, Stravinsky performed or recorded the concert suite on many occasions indicating his intentions for how the work should be presented. As with all Zephyrwindmusic publications, parts come with an Unlimited Copy License, thus removing any copyright issues in the way parts are used. Parts can be used in analog form – printed on paper – or uploaded as a digital part onto a reading device such as an iPad for performance. The original manuscript is in the Dresden library: Manuscript: Mus.2389-O- 123 (RISM-A/II-212000134). When Johann Georg Pisendel stayed in Venice, he studied with Vivaldi and be friended as well. Vivaldi dedicated a number of his violin concertos, sonatas and a sinfonia to him. Surely during the period between 1716 and 1717 Pisendel was in tour in Venice, we can asumme that he brought this concerto with him to Dresden to be performed there. Throughout his career, Beethoven made dozens of concept sketches for many movements of symphonies, besides those for the completed nine compositions of that genre. In the period 1812-1816, mainly during the composition of the Seventh and Eighth Symphonies, there were three recurring such projected works in his sketchbooks, namely in D minor, E minor and E flat major respectively, and remarkably with sketches for more than one of their movements. The present symphony in late Classical style is based on those projects, making use of all their themes in a „combined†symphony in D minor and thus with peculiar tonal relationships. The incentive for this new work in the Classical idiom was in the quality and potential of some of the sketches, especially the one included now in the main theme of the slow movement. Some of the sketched material was subject to transpositions and adaptations to fit the formal outlook, and to editorial choices for the unclear pitches and durations. This publication includes the score and parts. The sketchbook sources for each passage are mentioned at the bottom of the score. Total duration: 36 min. Performing Rights Organization: SOCAN. The Fallen – Flute Concerto (string parts – flute and string orchestra) MO163C-GString Parts in Three Movements (score and flute solo part available)Music by Mark O’Connor50 pages - 18:00 minutes in length The Fallen for flute solo and strings composed by Mark O’Connor in three movements was commissioned by two different flutists for their respective music festivals in the summer of 2003; Marya Martin for the 20th anniversary of her Bridghampton Festival in New York, and Beth Ross-Buckley at her Camarada Festival in San Diego. The compositional process for the piece began for O’Connor in 2003, the very day the war was launched in Iraq. The piece was finished about three weeks later around the time the statues of the Iraqi dictator fell in Baghdad. This music is a reflection of the people who lost their lives in the war. This particular impact on his music makes for quite a different result from O’Connor’s usual optimism. However he finds a way to weave in a sense of a better future in the third movement. By transforming the tragic and darker qualities of the first movement’s themes, and making a departure from the quirky feet on the ground playfulness of the second movement, here O’Connor yearns and urges for a more beautiful world. Scarborough Affair is a refreshing new take on the original: The familiar melody is never heard in its entirety, there are jazzy harmonies and jazzy syncopations, 5/8 and 7/8 measures, and the arrangement isn’t even in the 3/4 time of the original song. I met Sharon Roffman in the fall of 2011 when maestro Steven Lipsitt and the Boston Classical Orchestra premiered my Symphony No. 8 … The City of Light at Faneuil Hall in Boston, Massachusetts. Sharon was the featured concerto soloist on the same program. She was an electrifying soloist in concertos by Mozart and Haydn, respectively. She wowed every one with her chops and musicality! A year later I went to hear Sharon and the BCO again, and this time I said to Steven Lipsitt that I want to write a concerto for Sharon. He thought it was great idea, and so did she. The title Serenade Rondo has the same acronym as Sharon Roffman. So in this case, the form precedes the composition. Originally I had planned to compose the concerto in the usual three-movement format. And I thought I was going to make the last movement a rondo, something in the usual ABACA thing. But as I proceeded with the composition, I realized that the work was moving in such a way that the whole thing could be conceived of as a rondo.
