Published by Lisa L Ochoco (A0.559766). John Dowland (1562 – 1626) was a lutenist and singer in the Renaissance Period. The lute was a stringed instrument, most closely related to our guitar. He wrote quite a lot of music that is still played and sung by guitarists and singers today. Although his music was written for stringed instruments in general, many arrangers have adapted his works for wind instruments.This collection of 20 songs from his Third Book of Songs is arranged for flute quartet – 4 C flutes or 3 C flutes and alto. Most of these songs are rather short, so it is recommended that each song is played in its entirety at least twice. I arranged these songs so that the 1st flute always has the melody. To practice fairness in all parts, the parts should be rotated, to give each musician a chance to play the melody. Song list: 1. Farewell Too Fair 2. Time Stands Still 3. Behold a Wonder Here 4. What Poor Astronomers are They If each song is played twice in its entirety, you will have almost an hour's worth of music. A floral sea; a cloudless night was adapted from music originally composed for my upcoming hypertext opera, Not Quite a Sunset. Through a combination of guided improvisation and fully composed sections, the four flutists create textures that evoke the dreamworld experienced by the protagonist of the opera. The wind picks up around me, rousing me from sleep, and I open my eyes, but I do not move, only breathe. I am lying on my side in a field of long grass, the brushÂlike ends of which nudge me softly in rhythm with the moving air, encouraging me to get up. Something Â- the floral scent in the air, the chattering of insects around me  seems familiar about this place, though I am not entirely sure where I am.I begin to sit up slowly, first propping myself up on my elbows, taking in my surroundings. The tall grass spreads out in an endless sea around me, shaded black and grey by the darkness, occasionally glinting silver as it sways.  -excerpt from Not Quite a Sunset

This Divertimento is in three movements, fast-slow-fast after the manner of the Italian sinfonia. The opening Allegro, in sonata form, centers around a delightful, charming theme that ends with an amusing little dynamic retreat. The Andante is typically warm and elegant, its two halves contrasted by a brief acceleration in the accompaniment's pulse. A spirited Presto finale brings the Divertimento, a fine example of Mozart's ambitious work in a genre traditionally designated as light music, to a close. This arrangement for flute quartet (Flute 1, Flute 2, Flute 3, Flute 4 or Alto Flute) of the entire Divertimento is suitable for classroom, repertoire and recital.

Even though it is a funeral march, it is well suited for any musical performance occasion, being intended for beginner students who want to immerse themselves in the universe of romantic music, and nothing better than starting with the transitional composer of this period, which also does not prevent professional teachers from using it for recitals, academic presentations or didactic material in their classes as an ensemble practice. Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 14 in C minor sharp, Op. 27, No. 2, is one of his most popular compositions and was an audience favorite even in his day. Written when Beethoven was 31, the Moonlight Sonata (Mondscheinsonate in German) was composed after he finished some commissioned works, but there is no evidence that he was hired to write this work. It did not receive its nickname until 1832, five years after Beethoven's death. It was the critic Ludwig Rellstab who compared the music to a moonlighting on Lake Lucerne. This comparison was adopted as a nickname for the work. Called Quasi una fantasia by the author - like its companion Op. 27, No. 1 - the piece was completed in 1801 and dedicated the following year to one of the composer's pupils. Beethoven chose to open the sonata with a slow, hypnotic arpeggio movement, the best known of the entire work. The dotted rhythm of its minimal melody evokes the tradition of 'Trauermusik' (funeral music).

Donut Etudes vol. 3: Don’t Step in the Holes!1 Octave Scale Studies in 15+ keys for 4-part ensembles of like or mixed instruments If this is your first exposure to these scale studies, you are in for a treat! Donuts, if you make a mistake!The initial incarnation of these studies were written for trombone quartet and we would play them in the Tennessee Tech Trombone Choir with the challenge that whomever made the first mistake had to buy donuts for the rest of the ensemble. Since then I have brought that version to several clinics and warm up sessions. One time before I got to explain the title, a fellow trombone professor said, Oh, I get it! Don’t step in the holes!I only wish I had thought of that myself... Since we have one of the best donut shops in TN here in Cookeville, treating the studio to sugar coated goodies was always my intent.As with those initial exercises, you can vary these as much as you’d like.· Choose a tempo.· Choose a dynamic.· Choose an articulation/style.One way I like to play these is to have one person be the model, playing the entire scale over and over while everyone else plays the fragmented versions. That helps everyone to keep on track and stay in time. Double or triple up the parts for ensemble cohesion with a larger group.Practice one key, gradually speeding it up to improve fluidity, or choose a variation and take it through all keys, playing version A, B, C, or D then skipping to play the same set in a new key.If you want an additional challenge, play them in different octaves or change the key. Play the F Major set in f minor (all forms), different modes, etc. Players really have to be on their toes to remember if they are playing melodic minor in the ascending or descending form! For jazz players, try swinging them in dorian or mixolydian modes.The variations are endless!If you are using these with transposing instruments, 1) is F Major in Concert Pitch, 2) is Bb Major in Concert pitch, and so on. When you reach a scale that is enharmonic for another key (Db/C#, Gb/F#, or Cb/B), they are presented in both keys for each instrument so Trumpets can play in Eb while the Flutes are playing in C# with similar examples for all keys.All Donut Etudes with the same volume number are compatible so you can play them in mixed quartets or large ensembles with one or more instruments/people on part 1 and a different instrument on part 2, etc. Since the quartets are all identical, conductors/coaches can use any of the scores to tell which part should be playing at what time. Once you have played a scale with one set of parts, everyone can rotate to a different part and play the same scales again!Enjoy!
