This unstable, suspenseful work details the the prophesied disastrous signs that will precede Christ's Second Coming through the use of asymetrical time signatures, whereas Christ's depicted descent from the heavens is the only part of the piece in 4/4, arguably the most comforting time signature. In fact, the title, Signs of the Times, is actually a play on words of the term time signatures, which is the main gimmick of the piece. It is usually played at wedding receptions, parties, parades and at the end of a jazz funeral. The song is based on a simple 12-bar blues form and has a very singable melody. Before the melody starts, Soprano Sax (Opt. Alto Sax) plays a loud, high call to which the crowd responds, Hey! The group then proceeds to play the melody while second line parade festivities ensue.This arrangement, written at the Advanced / Intermediate level for Sax Quintet, is a fun and easy to perform tune for students or professionals. This selection is one of the many arrangements from The Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble's extensive music library which are being made available for the first time.Away in a Manger is one of the most popular Christmas carols and there are a number of musical settings of it. The most popular musical setting of it in the United States is the tune commonly known as Mueller. It was composed by James R. Murray and was first published under the name Luther's Cradle Hymn, in his collection Dainty Songs for Little Lads and Lasses, in 1887. It was intended for use in kindergarten, school and home.In this selection, Regis Bookshar has arranged three verses of this popular Christmas carol for a Woodwind Quintet, consisting of 1 Flute, 1 Oboe, 1 Clarinet, 1 French Horn and 1 Bassoon. The first verse is a traditional setting of the tune while the second verse has a more complex accompaniment. The third verse also includes a descant. Between the second and third verses, he has included a short interlude. Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is? is a song that was included on Chicago's 1969 debut album Chicago Transit Authority and released as a single in 1970. According to composer Robert Lamm, it was the first song recorded for the album. The song was not released as a single until two tracks from the band's second album, Make Me Smile and 25 or 6 to 4, had become hits. It reached No. 7 in the U.S. and No. 2 in Canada. Said Lamm: [It's] not a complicated song, but it’s certainly a quirky song. But that was my intent. I wanted to write something that wasn’t ordinary, that wasn’t blues-based, that didn’t have ice cream changes, and would allow the horns to shine and give Lee Loughnane a solo. This arrangement is for saxophone quintet (soprano, alto, two tenors, and baritone) and the melody is passed around the ensemble a bit. The arrangement is suitable for intermediate level players.

PROGRAM NOTES: The composer writes about his work: The woodwind quintet is one of my favorite mediums: the individual personality of each musical instrument on one hand, and the homogeneity that can skilfully be achieved on the other hand, stimulated my imagination for a long time. The titles of the movements represent my own plot thoughts and associations behind each story: The First is a meeting of five friends willing to play together while one of them is being considerably late. The second is my association to a native ceremonial dance. The third, reminds me of a light breeze on a lazy summer night, while sitting on front of the porch. The fourth describes a person gazing at the fire flames, controlled like a marionette by the wind. The fifth is a sinking / floating memory, and last, a discussion about how a fugue should sound. Nevertheless, this is only my view of the music. I would like to invite the listeners to find their own association, and create their individual stories.MOVEMENTS: 1. The Meeting2. Native Dance3. This woodwind quintet arrangement opens with oboe in a minor key followed by the melody, requiring some fast keywork on the part of the oboist. A pretty flute accompaniment adds an airy feel to the oboe line. In the second section the flute performs a series of runs, and is answered by the clarinet and horn. A trio section pairs flute with horn and clarinet with bassoon. The piece concludes with a return to the second section. WIND QUINTET (Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Horn, Bassoon) This charming and witty waltz was originally scored for accordion, bass and percussion, in the style of French café music. It was written by David Croft and Roy Moore as the theme tune for the BBC’s hit comedy series ‘Allo ‘Allo! Not only did Croft write the theme tune, but he was also the scriptwriter with writing partner Jeremy Lloyd. The original theme is a Fast Waltz, but this delicate and intricate wind quintet arrangement is best performed a little slower. This allows the detail and quirky harmonies to be savoured and enjoyed.The TV series ‘Allo ‘Allo with its iconic theme tune will be fondly remembered by anyone from the UK of a ‘certain age’, and by those who know it from the many repeats on cable and streaming channels. It was also broadcast in other parts of the world and ran for 9 series between 1984 and1992. The show was set in occupied France during the second world war and featured the café of René Artois. René had to contend with serving food and drink to the German officers in his café, while supporting members of the French resistance and concealing British spies. He also did his best to conceal his love affairs from his wife. The comedy was very much of its time but the music is especially delightful.Duration: 1 minutes 47 seconds
