The title was inspired by Cherry Lake, which is a 600 acre lake located in Madison County Florida. It is a beloved lake of Madison County that gives beautiful sights and unique activities for all ages. The name stems from the presence of wild cherry trees near the water's edge, according to Allen Morris' book of place names.It is my hope that Cherry Lake March will provide students with a song that they will enjoy learning to play, and provide other music educators with a teaching tool that can be used to motivate and encourage their students.Cherry Lake March is dedicated to all of my former music students in the Madison County Florida School System, who I had the privilege of teaching from 1974-2016.

Depicting spring, the melody was adopted as a piece for beginning koto students in the Tokyo Academy of Music Collection of Japanese Koto Music, issued in 1888. This leadsheet features a fresh reharmonization of the melody, starting with an open-ended and collective improvisation in E Phrygian; a great way to set the tone for the song. In my first springtime in Japan, I was on a musical tour when the Sakura near my home station of Yokota Air Base in Tokyo were peaking. How fortunate I was to return just in time to enjoy the breathtaking spectacle and to capture some gorgeous footage and photos of the lovely Sakura! The resultant musical journal entry was posted on YouTube to underscore the images rather than another video of sheet music. Duration: 4:00.

The Cherry-Tree Carol (Roud 453) is a ballad with the rare distinction of being both a Christmas carol and one of the Child Ballads (no. 54). The song itself is very old, reportedly sung in some form at the Feast of Corpus Christi in the early 15th century. The ballad relates an apocryphal story of the Virgin Mary, presumably while traveling to Bethlehem with Joseph for the census. In the most popular version, the two stop in a cherry orchard, and Mary asks her husband to pick cherries for her, citing her child. Joseph spitefully tells Mary to let the child's father pick her cherries. At this point in most versions the infant Jesus, from the womb, speaks to the tree and commands it to lower a branch down to Mary, which it does. Joseph, witnessing this miracle, immediately repents his harsh words. This arrangement was created for three voices, Treble, Tenor and Bass with an accompaniment on two guitars for the annual carol service – A Star For Christmas. The voices do to some extent take on the characters of the three people involved, Joseph, Mary and the unborn infant Jesus in the context of the lyrics used.

The origins of this lullaby can be traced back to 15th-century England. Pioneers from the British Isles brought it with them to the American Appalachians. Written in three verses, its lyrics tell of four seemingly impossible gifts the singer gave my love. The first verse describes each gift: cherry that has no stone, a chicken that has no bone. a story that has no end and a baby with no cryin'. The second verse poses the riddle: how can such items exist? The third provides the answers: A cherry when it's bloomin', it has no stone. A chicken when it's pippin', it has no bone. The story of I love you, it has no end. A baby when it's sleepin', has no cryin'. This Riddle Song has enjoyed somewhat of a revival since mid-20th century, making appearances in various movies, TV shows and recordings. In 1956, Jerry Livingston and Paul Francis adapted The Riddle Song tune, added an original bridge and created new lyrics; Johnny Mathis recorded it as The Twelfth of Never, giving the haunting melody probably its greatest surge in popularity. This arrangement is in G major and opens with an upbeat introduction. For the first statement of the melody, tempo slows and Trumpets alternate the lead. On the second time through, tempo speeds up slightly and tuba takes the lead. For the third, tempo is back to the opening speed and Horn in F plays the melody. On the fourth time through, Trumpets and Trombone frame the tune in a call-and-response form. In the fifth, Trombone takes the lead. In the sixth and final statement, Horn in F and Trombone play melody at half speed while Trumpets play a fairly complicated counterpoint (at what may seem like double speed!). This, until the last phrase (A baby when it's sleepin'), when the melody switches over to Trumpets and Trombone takes the counterpoint. Trumpet 1 plays its A above the staff a number of times. Tuba's lowest note is its F down below the staff. Otherwise, notes for all instruments are well within normal playing range. Because of the recommended tempo, the countermelody at measures 68-83 could be problematic for Trumpets and Trombone and may require a little extra work. Completed in 2022, performance time runs about 3 minutes, 42 seconds. The arranger, Les Smith, will be happy to provide substitute parts (for example, treble clef baritone for trombone) at no charge. Written for the T-Town Jazz Band and named for a Tulsa landmark, this is a big band swing tune in F minor blues with solos and exposure aplenty most notably in the third trombone part. The piece follows a chap who is happily walking (or jaunting) down Cherry Street. Three other guys come in and pick up his melody as a unison trio. This moves into a quick verse in the ensemble before the four players each take a solo turn almost like a combo. The party then takes off with the full band before it moves back to the trio wandering off while crowd bids them farewell and the original soloist takes a final turn. The reason there is such a focus on the third trombone is because this piece is dedicated to Dale Turner who was the third trombone player in the T-Town Jazz Band and a founding member of the band. We tried to get him to improv a solo here and there, but he wouldn't do it. We figured if we wrote it into his part, he would play it, and so the next piece I was writing was Cherry Street Jaunt, so the 3rd trombone got a lot of love. Unfortunately, the band had to shut down for a time due to COVID-19, and during that time, Dale passed due to complications from it. As a result, he never saw the part I wrote to trick him into a solo. The MP3 is generated from the composition program, but the video link is a live performance.

The three female voices, overlapping and assisting each other like waves of water, symbolise the faceless persona of nature: perhaps the wind rustling through the tree; perhaps the trees themselves. Much like the text, the music begins sweetly, but with one word the atmosphere is sent in a completely different direction. The second half of the piece sees the voices fittin the shape of wedding bells, almost mockingly, with the alto line bringing imposing strength underneath.
