The Home Coming March (1908) - Concert Band Score and Parts PDF Music by: ET Paull Of course, eventually, all the soldiers and sailors had to eventually come home from all the battles and Paull had that eventuality well covered also. The artwork on the front cover (of unknown origin) is one that is full of imagery that covers all aspects of the services, Army and Navy and is full of patriotic and familial ideals. The border lists all of the US States and the corner pictures depict aspects of homecoming. The main image is a parade of victory. Let's let Paull explain it all to us as he did on the inside cover. Why This Piece Of Music Was Named The Home Coming March Explanatory When the author had about completed the music of the present march, it occurred to him that it might be well to have suggestions made from a number of people, recommending a good name for same, for after all there is considerable in a name. He, therefore, had a special advertisement placed in several of the leading music Journals throughout the country, offering a prize of $10.00 in gold to anyone suggesting a name that would be accepted. Over three thousand names were sent in from all parts of the country, even from far away New Zealand and Australia, in which countries the author's marches are universal favorites. Included in the letters received was one from Mr. W. C. Bates, Secretary of the Sheffield Advertising Agency of New York and Chicago, in which he suggested the name The Home Coming March. After due consideration, this name was accepted, and the prize was awarded and paid to Mr. Bates, who stated that he was prompted to recommend this name on account of having been present during the impressive celebration of Old Home Week in Boston, Mass., last year. Probably no one idea is so universally dominant in the mind of the Human Race as that of home, or matters pertaining to home. The author believes that the name selected is one that will appeal to everyone; as the many pleasant associations with the words Home Coming are almost without limit. The title page of this march is without any exception the handsomest seen on a piece of music. The main body of the title pace represents a street scene, with buildings decorated and shows a handsome royal Arch of Welcome in the foreground, gaily decorated with flags, emblems, and bunting. A band is shown passing under the arch, leading a procession of the Home Guard, and thousands of people waving handkerchiefs, banners, flags, etc. Four smaller scenes also appear on the page, one representing the Home Coming of the soldier from war; another scene shows the Home Coming of the sailor boys embarking from their battleships; another scene represents the Home Coming reunion of the family and loved ones; the fourth scene represents the Home Coming of the father from work, where a little tot has been watching and waiting, and runs to meet him. The whole design of the title page is then surrounded by a border of differently designed medallions, on which appears the names of all the States of the Union, making without a doubt, the most unique and attractive title page ever conceived for a piece of music. One thing Paull mastered early in his career was the art of overstatement! Musically, this march is beginning to show the repetitiveness of many of Paull's works, especially evident as time passed. Once Paull found the formula (a fabulous cover and a playable, rousing march) that sold music, he stuck with it and was quite successful as a result.This arrangement is for Full Concert Band with the original optional piano part ( Not on the score). This arrangement is part of the Chicago Gargoyle Brass & Organ Ensemble Signature Series.Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor (BWV 582) is an organ work composed by Bach early in his career. It is arguably one of his greatest and most important works. The passacaglia starts with an ostinato theme, followed by 20 variations. Immediately after the passacaglia, without break, is a double fugue based on the ostinato theme. This arrangement pays homage to the great transcriptions of Stokowski and Ormandy, by weaving the colors of brass, organ and percussion into symphonic textures. Perfect for any recital, concert or pops program. This arrangement is scored for brass quintet, organ and a single percussionist (timpani, snare drum, suspended cymbal). Due to the range of the first trumpet (to C6), parts are provided for trumpet in C, E-flat and doubling on B-flat trumpet/B-flat piccolo (select whichever part works best for you). Born in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1887, Florence Price received early musical training from her mother, going on to study at the prestigious New England Conservatory of Music, graduating in 1906 with a Soloist’s Diploma in Organ Performance, and a Teacher’s Diploma in Piano Performance. After completing her degree, Price returned back to the south to teach music and after about 20 years, moved her family moved to Chicago to ultimately escape the racial tension in the south. It was here that she was able to properly establish herself as a concert pianist, organist and composer. She composed over 300 works, including 20 full orchestral pieces and over 110 art songs, many performed by leading American orchestras and esteemed vocalists. Price was the first African-American woman composer to earn national recognition. Seen as a pioneer among women, she was celebrated constantly for her achievements.Originally, written for organ, 'Adoration' (dating from 1951, just a few years before her death), is one of Florence Price’s best-known works, available in several different versions. Beginning in the 1930s, Price earned a living by playing organ in churches as well as in theatres. Adoration is a work of deep devotion and sincerity, a simple yet beautiful work suitable for church concerts and for remembrance/memorial events.

It was originally published in London as part of the Jullien Band Journal in 1849 and uses music from America as thematic material in a manner in which Louis Jullien (1812-1860) did with his other polkas and quadrilles written to showcase music from different countries. French-born Louis Jullien was an international superstar conductor, composer and music publisher. Among other things in his career, he led his Jullien Orchestra on a tour of America in 1853 and founded the concert series in London known as the Proms Concerts. He also employed some of the biggest names in the music world at one time or another including Hector Berlioz, Jean-Baptiste Arban, and Theodore Thomas (founder of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra).

The piece is in a Neo-Romantic and slightly modern style, although it only includes a few contemporary playing techniques. The title mystery derives from the dialogue between two opposing forces, the first, presented in the opening theme, is a beautiful locked box containing hidden gems of knowledge, while the second, heard in the development section, is an aggressive passionate voice seeking the answers to the sacred question: what is the meaning of life? These two voices go back and forth in a type of struggle before finally, at the end, there is a kind of opening or revelation, where the box is partially opened, perhaps to reveal another box inside containing a deeper layer of meaning.
