This concerto is in the traditional three movement format with the first and third movements being fast and the middle movement slow. The second and third movements are most like a blues work. The first movement is a rondo format, is not particularly bluesy. A Les Paul™ guitar would play particularly well in this movement. The second movement switches between the soloist as the distorted guitar sound to the vocalist as the clean guitar sound. The final movement is happy, upbeat, and lively good time blues. In the second and third movements in particular, the basses (cello, double bass) should be easily heard. At the end of the third movement, the precisionist on the drum set should improvise a loud, untimed measure, solo utilizing all the drums and cymbals in the set ending with four moderately paced and slowing beats on the snare drum. A momentary pause, then the final chord. The guitarist will need at least one foot pedal for distortion enabling him/her to switch between a clean sound and a distorted sound. The guitar should be the equivalent of a Fender™ Stratocaster or Telecaster guitar; a Gibson™ Les Paul would do nicely also. The music is partially fingered leaving the player the opportunity to interpret the part. The work is after the fashion of Chicago style blues of the 1960’s. The conductor and guitarist may wish to listen to recordings by the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, John Lee Hooker, John Mayall and the Blues Breakers, B.B. King, etc. to get a feel for the music of the 1960’s blues bands. It would be highly desirable to use an organ, for the 3rd movement, that can produce a Hammond B3™ with Leslie sound, as that instrument was widely used in blues of that period. Although some of the notes notated as harmonics (h) in the score can be played as fretted notes, playing them as natural and artificial harmonics provides an interesting change of tonality. The orchestral part is not particularly challenging. The concerto is approx. 17 minutes in length.

This arrangement is part of the Chicago Gargoyle Brass & Organ Ensemble Signature Series.Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor (BWV 582) is an organ work composed by Bach early in his career. It is arguably one of his greatest and most important works. The passacaglia starts with an ostinato theme, followed by 20 variations. Immediately after the passacaglia, without break, is a double fugue based on the ostinato theme. This arrangement pays homage to the great transcriptions of Stokowski and Ormandy, by weaving the colors of brass, organ and percussion into symphonic textures. Perfect for any recital, concert or pops program. This arrangement is scored for brass quintet, organ and a single percussionist (timpani, snare drum, suspended cymbal). Due to the range of the first trumpet (to C6), parts are provided for trumpet in C, E-flat and doubling on B-flat trumpet/B-flat piccolo (select whichever part works best for you). Born in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1887, Florence Price received early musical training from her mother, going on to study at the prestigious New England Conservatory of Music, graduating in 1906 with a Soloist’s Diploma in Organ Performance, and a Teacher’s Diploma in Piano Performance. After completing her degree, Price returned back to the south to teach music and after about 20 years, moved her family moved to Chicago to ultimately escape the racial tension in the south. It was here that she was able to properly establish herself as a concert pianist, organist and composer. She composed over 300 works, including 20 full orchestral pieces and over 110 art songs, many performed by leading American orchestras and esteemed vocalists. Price was the first African-American woman composer to earn national recognition. Seen as a pioneer among women, she was celebrated constantly for her achievements.Originally, written for organ, 'Adoration' (dating from 1951, just a few years before her death), is one of Florence Price’s best-known works, available in several different versions. Beginning in the 1930s, Price earned a living by playing organ in churches as well as in theatres. Adoration is a work of deep devotion and sincerity, a simple yet beautiful work suitable for church concerts and for remembrance/memorial events.

It was originally published in London as part of the Jullien Band Journal in 1849 and uses music from America as thematic material in a manner in which Louis Jullien (1812-1860) did with his other polkas and quadrilles written to showcase music from different countries. French-born Louis Jullien was an international superstar conductor, composer and music publisher. Among other things in his career, he led his Jullien Orchestra on a tour of America in 1853 and founded the concert series in London known as the Proms Concerts. He also employed some of the biggest names in the music world at one time or another including Hector Berlioz, Jean-Baptiste Arban, and Theodore Thomas (founder of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra).
