Published by Penguinman Music (A0.1023051). Despite the shadows was composed at the request of Susan Narucki, who was curating the February 2014 concert of UCSD's Palimpsest Ensemble. The piece was written as a companion piece for Luigi Dallapiccola's Piccola musica notturna. It is a meditation on working through the grief of infertility. The piece is structured using a single chord, gradually built note by note in the opening section, and slowly transforming and transposing throughout the piece as the voicing expands.

English.American poet Sara Teasdale (1884-1933) won the Pulitzer Prize for her 1917 collection of poems titled Love Songs. The text for this song is taken from “Barter,†the first in this set of poems. Despite the poet's history of poor emotional and physical health, the text captures a hopeful attitude that foreshadows the spirit of optimism that was the precursor to the Roaring Twenties. A rhythmic piano part is the foundation for a captivatingly lyric melody that gently unfolds throughout the piece. German-born composer Emilie Mayer (1812-1882) wrote and published music during a time period that was challenging for a female composer. Doing so under the long shadows of Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven complicated the situation, yet Mayer prospered and was quite successful during her lifetime. Sadly, despite this early success, her works have not received the number of performances they deserve. Faust Overture, premiered shortly before Mayer’s death, is by far her most successful orchestral work. In it, one can clearly hear the influence of Beethoven. This edition is based entirely on Mayer’s 1880 publication. It is highly edited including an update to modern instrumentation and the addition of missing/ inconsistent dynamics and articulations. As with all Zephyrwindmusic publications, parts come with an Unlimited Copy License, thus removing any potential copyright issues. Parts can be used in analog form – printed on paper – or uploaded as a digital part onto a reading device such as an iPad for performance.
