The clarinettist Irith Gabriely was inspired by her love of Barbara Heller’s Dialogues (for violin and viola) to arrange these duets for two Bb clarinets. The result is a set of varied concertante dialogues that present clarinettists with a few challenges, requiring stamina, breath control, intense and contrasting dynamics, chromatic passages, whole tone passages, sensitive tone production, leaps across wide intervals, fast playing, disciplined rhythmic control and listening to one another closely. In this edition all tempo indications and dynamic markings are intended for guidance: these duets may equally well be interpreted in other ways. This edition therefore also includes a second section where all the pieces are reproduced without such markings, ready for individual interpretation. The Dialogues lend themselves very well to chamber performances; they are also short enough to serve as brief interludes at readings or exhibitions. Their expressive qualities, brevity and range of musical and technical demands make them highly suitable material for youth music competitions. A flute or oboe might well be played with the clarinet as alternative instrumentation for these duets (ED 22017).

Stasis III, Passacaglia Ritmica, L ‘istesso tempo, grave A work of free serialism, composed on the ritual of the Egomia, a very famous litany of the Eastern Orthodox Church which takes place on Holly Friday. It consist of 3 parts, 3 Stasis, according to the traditional ritual. The unaccompanied monologues of the 1st Stasis lead to the virtuosic dialogues of the 2nd and to the general fortissimo tutti of the 3d. The work has a version with narration on the prototype text of the traditional ritual. It was written on November 2009 for the Q innegal Wind Quintet which gave the premier at the German Evangelic Church in Athens next year and is dedicated to composer’s stepmother, Eleni, who died after the completion of the work. Dance de Confusion Confluence is the name of a place in Lyon where 2 rivers flow together: The Saône flows into the - at least in German - female Rhone. In French, however, it flows into DEN Rhone - Le Rhône. This confuses the composer: How do rivers get their gender, are they sometimes male, sometimes female? Is it because of their character, because of the landscape that they flow through? By their water, even by their fish? On the people on their shores? A real confusion ensues. In the subsequent thoughts about music, the composer discovers certain analogies and asks himself the question: does gender-typical music actually exist? Or instruments? Typically male harmonies or rhythms? Or clearly female melodies and the way to interpret? The 3-movement composition is dedicated to this question and meanders like a dance in the bed of the converging streams. Colorful modal harmonies form the bed for wide arcs of melody. A varied, recurring theme sets the direction and creates a bubbling, dancing pull in the direction of the mouth: dancing finale! 1st movement: Deux Characters In the first movement (Andante) the roles are distributed - the Sâone and the Rhône get their performers. A first glance at the ensemble reveals a tendency: woodwinds take on the female lead, the male brass the counterpart. The two drummers each support one of the two poles in solidarity. The assignment may be obvious, but strong doubts remain in the final chord of the first movement. 2. Dialogues: In smaller and larger dialogues, there is a lively exchange and the properties are worked out and further developed. But it is also increasingly being copied and imitated, even maliciously agitated and aped. You try to convince each other, interrupt each other, both sides increasingly flare up, it gets louder and more hectic, louder and louder, too loud, until communication stops: in the end, you just yell at each other! 3. Dance de Confusion The resulting confusion finds a conciliatory end in the third movement of the composition: Let's dance! Bei darauf folgenden Gedanken über Musik entdeckt der Komponist gewisse Analogien und stellt sich die Frage: Gibt es eigentlich geschlechtertypische Musik? Oder Instrumente? Typisch männliche Harmonien oder Rhythmen? Oder eindeutig weibliche Melodien und die Art, zu interpretieren? Dieser Frage widmet sich die 3-sätzige Komposition und mäandriert dabei tänzerisch im Bett der zusammenfließenden Ströme. Farbenreiche modale Harmonien bilden das Bett für weite Melodiebögen. Ein variiert wiederkehrendes Thema gibt die Richtung vor und erzeugt einen sprudelnd tänzelnden Sog in Richtung der Mündung: Tanzendes Finale! 1. Satz: Deux Charactères Im ersten Satz (Andante) werden die Rollen verteilt - die Sâone und der Rhône erhalten ihre Darsteller. Ein erster Blick auf das Ensemble lässt schon eine Tendenz erkennen: Holzbläser(inne)n übernehmen die weibliche Hauptrolle, das männliche Blech den Gegenpart. Die beiden Schlagwerker unterstützen solidarisch je einen der beiden Pole. Mag die Zuordnung auf der Hand liegen, so bleiben doch starke Zweifel im Schlussakkord des ersten Satzes. 2. Dialogues In kleineren und größeren Dialogen wird sich munter ausgetauscht und werden die Eigenschaften herausgearbeitet und weiter entwickelt. The three movements of this piano quintet share a common element contained in the seed of a motivic idea—the interplay between the minor and the major 3rd : a tonal ambiguity or conflict of the minor 2nd. Stylistically, this Sonata pays modest homage to neo-classicism of 20th Century composers such as Poulenc (I), Prokofiev, Shostakovich (III), and perhaps even a touch of Gershwin (II). I hope this piano quintet will offer players and their audience chamber music that is a bit unusual yet worthwhile. The Sonata embraces the lightheartedness, the melancholy , and the whimsy of nostalgia. There is no separate piano part.Performance Notes:I Moderately fast, expresses dialogues of themes that move between piano and strings. The playfulness of the exposition (repeat is not optional) can give way to a more passionate building of the development to the climax at letter H. In the recapitulation the longer bridge remains steadily in tempo (no accelerando) relaxing just before letter N and theme two. The coda after letter O is a somber premonition of movement two.II Slowly, the bowings are ad libitum. The viola is chantlike and smooth. Violins glissando like the portamento of the Chinese stringed instruments, the Guqin or the Ehru type glissando leading to a very pure quiet long tones without any vibrato and the resulting fourth should be a pure tuning. The piano can use una corda ad libitum in softer passages, and the pedal (damper) ad libitum. In the B section (Letter D) pianist should treat the 64th notes like an ornament (upper mordent). Strings play the eighths after Letter G accents with strong bow changes. At the end, the piano lingers until the sound vanishes after the strings die away.III Introduction: Quick and spirited, the transition (Introduction) is measured and strict without alteration leading to letter A. The rondo theme, ‘A’ section, can slightly intensify in each successive repetition, but not slavishly. The small waltz or ‘B’ section, Letter C, the quartet might play to resemble a reed organ or harmonium—sweet, sonorous, and harmonious. The ‘C’ section, Letter G, big swell on short bridge passage, then pizz. strings become very rustic and like a peasant dance. Pianist can use una corda ad libitum in soft passages. Violins again after Letter I play similarly to non-vibrato of 2nd movement. The ‘B’ section at Letter L is now the grand waltz slightly faster and more indulgent with tiny rubatos tastefully allowed.James Albert Yeager (b.1946)James began his career as organist and choral conductor then harpsichordist and finally, professor of sacred music. As an organ major at The Ohio State University, he studied with Dr. Wilbur Held (B.Mus. 1969). Professor Joseph Goodman mentored him in composition at Union Theological Seminary in New York city (M. Sac. Mus, 1971). At the University of Colorado-Boulder, he returned to the organ, nevertheless, keeping composition as a mainstay (D.M.A. 1985). He was appointed Director of Sacred Music at the Pontifical College Josephinum (Columbus, Ohio) and rose to the rank of Professor (1984-2009). He retired as professor emeritus in 2009 and moved to New Mexico. While residing in Mountainair, New Mexico, he was organist/choral director for 12 years at a major Albuquerque church retiring again in 2021. His most recent compositions include Passacaglia & Fugue for Organ and Chamber Orchestra (2022), a Fugue for Piano and Orchestra (2022), a Sonatina for Flute and Piano (2023), and the Sonata for Piano Quintet (2024) as well as several smaller works for voice and piano.

I originally wanted to compose a short, bittersweet waltz, and the mythological city of Atlantis seemed perfect for this. The waltz I ended up with is not really meant for dancing, but rather used as a way for storytelling. This story, however, is one of my own fabrications but is still loosely based on the Atlantis mentioned by Plato's dialogues: Critias and Timaeus. This piece outlines two Atlanteans that, with the end in sight, decide to dance one last waltz together as their gleaming city collapses around them. It's a tragic farewell to a utopia that once was and could've been, but remains now as only a memory – a relic lost at the bottom of the sea.
