It Is Not Death to Die is a new setting of French poet Henri Abraham César Malan's Non, ce n'est pas mourir as translated by George Washington Bethune and adapted for this work. Why this text? It first came to my notice shortly after the passing of Billy Graham, who was known to paraphrase D. L. Moody, Someday you will read or hear that Billy Graham is dead. Don’t you believe a word of it. I shall be more alive than I am now. I will just have changed my address. I will have gone into the presence of God.Graham's bold proclamation and Malan's poetry motivated me to focus anew on the resurrection, re-remembering it as the pivotal element of the Christian faith. For if there is no resurrection, Paul says in 1 Cor 15, our faith is useless. But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead! Unfortunately, singing about heaven has, perhaps, been neglected of recent decades. We seem to have focused more on the already to the detriment of the not yet. But it is important to remember that this life is not all there is! Quoting Paul again, the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us (Rom 8:18). Yet, if Christ delays, the grim inevitability of our transition into eternity is a certain experience we all face. Malan's poetry so poignantly and eloquently captures this tension that it compelled me to compose a fresh musical setting that attempts to captures the mixture of dread and hope borne out in the acclamation that death is swallowed up in victory! I pray that this setting aids the Church to remember the great hope and promise Christ has granted us: O Death, where is your victory? O Death, where is your sting?_______________________________________________________________________________________________The music opens with a C# diminished chord in a very still and somber texture reflective of grief. The text is introduced with the first of two main motives, a rising 4-note outline of B minor in a triple repetition of It Is Not Death. As each stanza proceeds the music concludes on the second motive, a 5-note descending span of a minor 7th in Bb Lydian. The energy and mood of the music gradually shift over the five stanzas, as the focus moves from this life to the next; the texture thickens, the harmony expands, and the dynamic grows into the music’s pinnacle on reign with You on high! The music closes on a reprise of the opening section, simultaneously mindful of our mortality and our eternity.

Memorial Day March- Primer Level (or early Level 1) piano students. The right Hand is in the D (minor) 5-finger position, Left Hand is in the Middle C position. A Warm-up exercise reinforces the right-hand D position and the left-hand Middle C position—there's also, a “Push-Up” exercise to strengthen the 4th finger of each hand.This patriotic march uses half notes, quarter notes, 8th notes, and quarter rests and it includes dynamic contrast as the melody emerges, shared between both hands. The arrangement includes ascending and descending steps and skips with contrasting legato and staccato techniques in an altogether exciting marcato style. Original lyrics can be used to help with memorization. This march would be a great addition to the end-of-year piano recital or even a piano competition.Merry Go Round is also Primer or Early Level 1. In Middle-C hand position the gentle Waltz Time (3/4) brilliantly compliments the March and offers dynamic contrast and staccato technique. Students will enjoy the parallel motion contrasted to contrary motion with moving 8th notes in one hand against dotted half notes in the other hand. This arrangement invites a focus on musical expression that won't go unnoticed in a recital or contest setting.

Such a masterpiece with the quiet, very personal beginning and the powerful, hurt and angry second part. Despite looking for a while, I couldn't find a solo guitar music sheet as good as the piano versions out there. One that covers the whole song, doesn't stick with the easy chords like C and Fm, but goes with a more complex and beautiful Cadd9, Fm6/11 and such. So I came up with my own arrangement for solo guitar. It's an interesting mixture of strumming and fingerpicking worked out on 6 pages and so much fun to play. Not too hard, though, so you can also focus on the singing.

These studies are specifically designed for non-professional orchestras, although any orchestra will improve by playing some of these pieces during rehearsals. It is always necessary to pay attention to intonation and many other aspects of orchestral performance.In addition, these studies are also useful for orchestral conducting students. For example, it is essential to know how to conduct a simultaneous attack of a chord that does not begin on the first beat, but a eighth note after the third beat.I began writing these studies around 2013, when I took over the direction of the Bremer Orchestergemeinschaft and noticed the complete absence of repertoire of this kind. As a pianist, I am accustomed to studies by Carl Czerny or playing scales. Each individual instrumentalist knows studies of technique for their instrument. However, there are no, or at least I am not aware of, similar studies for orchestral performance technique and the specific difficulties of ensemble playing that it requires. The cycle Orchestraining aims to fill this gap.The particular study Orchestraining Nr. 01 focuses on the subject of simultaneous attacks, presenting a series of staccato chords in different parts of the bar. This version really sprinkles some razzle dazzle on an otherwise straightforward public domain song in G major, though it does not use the exact original melody.1. The original melody is NOT intact, this is ghostwritten. Notes were flatted to give a bluesier sound.  2. The chords are very modern, despite this song being written in the mid 1850s. 3. Grace notes added 4. Background harmonies now have more thought put into part writing, originality, being idiomatic on guitar, and making the melody the forefront. 5. Left hand fingerings added to aid in sight-reading.6. Letter names added to note heads to aid in sight-reading.7. I like versions like this because it could be used for a guitarist who doesn't sing, a guitarist who does sing, or a guitarist in a band. In otherwords, the more band members, the more you are just focusing on background chords, the more you are a one-person band, the more you have to take everything in. Tips:1. I arranged this so that students could see how blues scales work as I drenched this song in more blues than it originally had (Bb - B...F - F#...E minor blues and G major blues respectively.) You'll notice I don't stay on these dissonant blues notes for very long, that's why there's so many grace notes in this song.2. The D9 in measure 6 was originally a D7. Some extensions like this don't really change the scale in use.3. The Ab7 in measure 7 was originally a D7, making the Ab7 a tritone substitution. If you know the key of G major well, that chord should stick out like a sore thumb. 4. The Bb7 in measure 14 was originally a G7. I call these kind of substituitions mediant substitutions as they are similiar to jazz tritone substitions, but at a 3rd instead of a tritone.5. The Cm(maj7) was originally a C major chord. This is a modal borrowing composition technique of borrowing from the parrallel minor, in this case, G minor.

Recorded as a 56-minute improvisation on 12/25/02, the music is thoughtful, somber, and quite elegant. There are actually thirteen pieces on the CD, but they segue into each other, making it difficult to tell where one song ends and another begins. This is very definitely NOT a problem, as the album unfolds naturally and organically, asking questions, looking inward, and expressing shock and grief. However, this is not music about only despair or rage. I also hear hope and determination as well as quiet reverence - the strange mix of emotions we all felt during those dark days. Titles include From Cradle to Coffin, Bravery, Numb, New York Skyline, and Truth. Isadar has a wonderful way of wearing his heart on his musical sleeve, pouring deep emotion and heartfelt expression into his music. The music was recorded in one take, but rather than meandering all over the place, Isadar used recurring themes that make the work cohesive and consistent enough to hold together even after many listens. This is a very strong and passionate work, but it was recorded with a rather quiet voice which allows it to be very comfortable and soothing background music as well as evocative solo piano music for concentrated and focused listening. The Purple Heart Sheet Music Collection is a note-for-note solo piano transcription of Isadar’s 2003 memorial CD by the same name (transcribed by David Shenton). The recording and book are a tribute to those who died in the attacks of 9/11/2001. The music was recorded in one take and although there are thirteen titles, the pieces segue into each other, creating a seamless 56-minute improvisation. The book indicates where the various pieces begin and end, but can also be played as one long piece. Although the theme of the music is very somber and bleak, the music covers the broad range of emotions we all felt during that period - anger, sadness, hope, determination, resolve, fear, grief, etc. Although the recording is an improvisation, Isadar incorporates a recurring theme that holds the work together as a single entity. Some pieces are very slow while others are lively and even fast. All thirteen pieces are in C minor/Eb major, but the variety of moods and tempos keep the music evolving without becoming repetitious. When the recurring theme pops up, it’s like seeing an old friend!The difficulty in playing someone’s improvisation is that the creation of the music was spontaneous and free-flowing. It isn’t easy to read an improvisation and give the music that quality of freedom. Less advanced pianists might find this frustrating. The time signatures change frequently, but a competent pianist will have no trouble with that. As I was playing this book, I sensed that I was looking directly into Isadar’s heart and feeling what he was feeling as the music was being born - a very powerful experience! Isadar is an artist on both Enlightened Piano Radio & Whisperings Solo Piano Radio, featuring today's biggest names in solo piano music.
