Published by zephyrwindmusic.com (A0.1141352). German composer Max Bruch (1838-1920) wrote the sublime and introspective work Kol Nidrei for solo cello and orchestra in London in 1880. It is amongst the most performed works by Bruch. A single movement lasting approximately 12 minutes, it is scored for solo cello, 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 4 horns, 2 trumpets, 3 trombones, timpani, strings, and harp. As with all Zephyrwindmusic publications, parts come with an Unlimited Copy License, thus removing any copyright issues in the way parts are used. Parts can be used in analog form – printed on paper – or uploaded as a digital part onto a reading device such as an iPad for performance. Published by Cornelius Edition (uk) (A0.805662). German Composer Max Bruch (1838-1920) completed this work in 1880 whilst in Liverpool, England. It is dedicated to - and premiered by - Robert Hausmann, who had requested a cello piece from Bruch. The work is styled as an ‘Adagio on 2 Hebrew Melodies’. The first theme, which gives the work its title, imitates the voice of the cantor who chants the liturgy during the evening service on every Yom Kippur. The second theme is derived from English composer Isaac Nathan’s arrangement of Byron’s O weep for Those that Wept on Babel’s Stream and is given a more Schumannesque treatment in the tonic major key.Although originally scored for full orchestra, the work is frequently and effectively performed with piano accompaniment. The violin is ideally suited to the solo line and this makes an excellent recital piece.

Wrongly, as is apparent in Kol Nidrei, the adagio 'based on Hebrew melodies', Op. 47, one of the most expressive Romantic solo works. Composed in 1881, it testifies to the composer's enthusiasm for folksongs and thrives on a passionate and warm tonal language.

Kol Nidrei, Op. 47, is a composition originally written for cello and orchestra by Max Bruch. He completed the composition in Liverpool before it was first published in Berlin in 1881. It is styled as an Adagio on two Hebrew Melodies for Cello and Orchestra with Harp and consists of a series of variations on two main themes of Jewish origin. Bruch scored the work for solo cello, 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 4 horns, 2 trumpets, 3 trombones, timpani, harp and strings. In the present arrangement for Solo Alto Saxophone and SATB Saxophone Quartet, the 1st alto takes the solo cello line, while the remaining four voices cover the orchestral accompaniment. Special thanks go to Mr. Marino Galluzzo, leader of the Three Rivers Saxophone Quartet, based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, for suggesting the arrangement and providing encouragement. The premiere performance took place at the 23rd Annual Saxophone and Woodwind Workshop, hosted by the TRSQ at California University in California, Pennsylvania, in June 2013. The first theme, which also lends the piece its title, comes from the Kol Nidre declaration, recited during the evening service on Yom Kippur. In Bruch's setting of the melody, the solo instrument imitates the rhapsodic voice of the cantor who chants the liturgy in the synagogue. The second subject of the piece is quoted from the middle section of Isaac Nathan's arrangement of O Weep for Those that Wept on Babel's Stream, a lyric which was penned by Lord Byron in his collection Hebrew Melodies. This arrangement is faithful to the original and is ideally suited to the Viola as the solo instrument .

This is an arrangement for brass quintet of Bruch’s Kol Nidrei, originally for solo cello (or double bass) and orchestra. It is a very beautiful work based on romantic harmonies accompanying a lyrical solo line, here passed around equally between the members of the quintet. The level of difficulty is intermediate-advanced. There are a few tricky spots in each instrument, most of which can be worked around with stylistic rubato (if necessary). Given the scarcity of gorgeous slower works for brass quintet, this is a great addition to the repertoire.
