Piano Solo, Collection / Songbook - Advanced Intermediate - Digital Download Composed by Public Domain, as performed and recorded by Isadar. Arranged by Isadar. Neo-Classical, Christmas, Children's Music, Recital, New Age. 50 pages. Published by Mainya Music Publishing (BMI)
Sounds like: Keith Jarrett, Bill Evans, Vince Guaraldi, Liz Story's "The Gift", George Winston's "December", early Windham Hill solo piano artists, and "A Winter's Solstice" compilations.<br> <br> <br> Transcribed by: David Shenton ( https://www.shentonmusic.com/ ) verbatim to the sound recording<br> <br> Contents:<br> 1. Bring A Torch (Bring A Torch, Jeanette, Isabella)<br> 2. Children Go Where I Send Thee / The Holly & The Ivy<br> 3. Star Of Wonder (We Three Kings of Orient Are)<br> 4. Silent (Silent Night, Holy Night)<br> 5. Midnight (It Came Upon the Midnight Clear)<br> 6. What Child Is This?<br> 7. Greensleeves (homage to Liz Story)<br> 8. Three Ships (I Saw Three Ships, Come Sailing In)<br> 9. The Coventry Carol (Lully, Lulla, Lullay)<br> 10. Sing We Now Of Christmas (Noël Nouvelet)<br> 11. Carol Of The Bells<br> <br> Album & Songbook review by: Kathy Parsons (MainlyPiano.com):<br> <br> I have discovered a real wealth of great solo piano Christmas CDs this year! Isadar’s In Search For the Meaning of Christmas definitely falls into this category! Thoughtful, introspective, and a bit moody, Isadar’s arrangements are true to the carols (with some small melody changes in “Bring a Torch” and “Carol of the Bells” that bother me just a little) and still seem very personal. “Bring a Torch”, “The Holly and the Ivy”, and “I Saw Three Ships” are given a lighthearted, joyful treatment. “Star of Wonder (We Three Kings)”, “What Child Is This?”, “The Coventry Carol”, and “Sing We Now of Christmas” are all minor, somber, reverent pieces, and all four are given loving arrangements that keep the dark, mysterious nature of the songs and reflect Isadar’s own sensibilities. “Carol of the Bells” and Isadar's take on Liz Story’s arrangement of “Greensleeves” are energetic without losing all abandon. “Silent Night” and “It Came Upon a Midnight Clear” present us with a very cold, deep solitude - both feel like late night with moonlight reflecting off the snow. Both are moody, but very beautifully so. George Winston’s “December” is one of my all-time favorite holiday albums, and I feel In Search For the Meaning of Christmas holds up exceptionally well next to it. This is an excellent collection of Christmas music, and I highly recommend it!<br> <br> In Search For the Meaning of Christmas is the companion songbook to Isadar’s 1999 solo piano release by the same name. Meticulously transcribed note-for-note by David Shenton of New York Music Publishing, the music is faithful to the recording in every way (except for the pianist - YOU!). The scores are clear, concise, and easy to read, and also include chord indications for improvisation or the use of instruments other than or in addition to the piano. Isadar’s arrangements cover a whole range of emotions, from very dark and somber to joyful and buoyant. All of the pieces from the CD are here, including Isadar’s homage to Liz Story and her beautiful version of “Greensleeves.” My personal favorites of the eleven songs in this book are the bright and cheerful “Bring A Torch,” “What Child Is This?”, “Greensleeves,” the darkly gorgeous “The Coventry Carol,” and “Sing We Now of Christmas.” Other titles that I really like are “Children Go Where I Send Thee/The Holly and the Ivy,” “Star of Wonder (We Three Kings)," “Carol of the Bells,” and the effervescent “Three Ships.” “Silent” (Silent Night) and “Midnight” (It Came Upon a Midnight Clear) are a bit too dark for my own holiday tastes, but are interesting and very personal arrangements. This book will make a great addition to your holiday sheet music collection and is available from isadar.com and amazon.com.<br> <br> Isadar is an artist on both Enlightened Piano Radio & Whisperings Solo Piano Radio, the latter featuring some of today's biggest names in solo piano music, including Ludovico Einaudi, David Nevue, Brian Crain, Kevin Kern, Robin Spielberg, Michele McLaughlin, Philip Wesley and over 300 more...<br> <br> Also available as sheet music in physical songbooks, digital downloads, as well as software for Yamaha Disklavier player-pianos.<br> <br> For more information, visit his website at: http://www.isadar.com

The First Noel for String Quartet
Quatuor à cordes: 2 violons, alto, violoncelle

(+)
Composed by Traditional. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Christian, Repertoire, Christmas. Score, Set of Parts. 7 pages. Published by jmsgu3
Score: 3 pages, String parts 1 page each. The First Noel arranged for Alto Sax & Piano with new harmony for the final verse.<br> <br> Origins<br> The First Noel is an English Christmas carol. Even more, it was probably written in the late Cornish Renaissance period. While other versions spell the title as Nowell, this is just a colloquial variation. Furthermore, Noel is an older word meaning “Christmas.” Therefore “the First Noel” translates as “the First Christmas.” First of all, Gilbert and Sandy published the earliest version. As a result, this version appears in the “Carols Ancient and Modern” songbook of 1823. William Sandy edited and arranged the book. Similarly, his partner Davies Gilbert edited and added the familiar extra verses. The First Noel: String Quartet Version comes with new harmony in final verse for more energy and drive.<br> <br> Stainer<br> Organist and composer Sir John Stainer published the most noteworthy customary arrangement in the 1870’s. Stainer is above all famous for his songbook entitled: Christmas Carols New and Old (1871). This volume served as an important catalyst for reviving the English Christmas carol. Other famous Stainer arrangements from this book are such titles as What Child Is This, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, Good King Wenceslas, and I Saw Three Ships.<br> <br> Diatonic Function<br> The melodic structure in the First Noel is uncommon among English folk tunes. It simply repeats one phrase twice then follows a variation refrain. All three phrases of the song end on the mediant scale degree. This is unusual because the diatonic function of the mediant is non-final compared to the more usual tonic or even dominant degrees. Consequently, this gives the song as kind of open-ended feeling – like maybe it never really ends.<br> <br> Political Context<br> The Catholic clergy sang carols outside of the church in Latin. After the Protestant Reformation, the reformers thought it would be better for everyone to sing carols. They decided to bring music back to the common folk. So, they translated the lyrics from Latin into common language. Moreover, the Protestants wanted more control over the music in church than what the Vatican allowed. Protestant composers such as William Byrd composed complex polyphonic Christmas music that they called carols. Nonetheless, some famous folk carols were composed in this era. Eminent composers in the nineteenth century began to revise and adapt them. Consequently, they revived the English carol.

Piano,Tenor Saxophone - Level 1 - Digital Download SKU: A0.548504 Composed by Traditional. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Christian,Christmas. Score and part. 4 pages. Jmsgu3 #3387401. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.548504). The First Noel arranged for Tenor Sax & Piano with new harmony for the final verse.Origins The First Noel is an English Christmas carol. Even more, it was probably written in the late Cornish Renaissance period. While other versions spell the title as Nowell, this is just a colloquial variation. Furthermore, Noel is an older word meaning Christmas. Therefore the First Noel translates as the First Christmas. First of all, Gilbert and Sandy published the earliest version. As a result, this version appears in the Carols Ancient and Modern songbook of 1823. William Sandy edited and arranged the book. Similarly, his partner Davies Gilbert edited and added the familiar extra verses. The First Noel: Alto Sax Version comes with new harmony in final verse for more energy and drive. Stainer Organist and composer Sir John Stainer published the most noteworthy customary arrangement in the 1870’s. Stainer is above all famous for his songbook entitled: Christmas Carols New and Old (1871). This volume served as an important catalyst for reviving the English Christmas carol. Other famous Stainer arrangements from this book are such titles as What Child Is This, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, Good King Wenceslas, and I Saw Three Ships. Diatonic Function The melodic structure in the First Noel is uncommon among English folk tunes. It simply repeats one phrase twice then follows a variation refrain. All three phrases of the song end on the mediant scale degree. This is unusual because the diatonic function of the mediant is non-final compared to the more usual tonic or even dominant degrees. Consequently, this gives the song as kind of open-ended feeling – like maybe it never really ends. Political Context The Catholic clergy sang carols outside of the church in Latin. Register for free lifetime updates and revisions at www.jamesguthrie.com

String Quartet String Quartet - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.894856 Arranged by Samuel Valentin. Baroque,Christian,Christmas,Classical,Holiday. Score and parts. 37 pages. Pianiolist Music #4855169. Published by Pianiolist Music (A0.894856). Christmas is, personally, my favorite holiday of the year, now I haven't been alive for that long but if there's anything that I've learned about this holiday, it's that as you get older it starts to hold a different meaning, when you're a kid you really just care about that bike (or yamaha electric piano, in my case) being under the tree, and as you get older you start to understand the meaning of family and friends. and that's all this holiday is about, being together.Well, this Christmas I hope that you and your string quartet (or orchestra) get together and find the true meaning of Christmas in my medley of Christmas carols, and I hope you enjoy. .

Choral Choir (SATB divisi) - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1088976 By Matthew M Tang. By Words: Christina Rossetti Melody: Gustav Holst, Harold Darke. Arranged by Matthew M Tang. A Cappella,Christmas,Classical,Holiday. Octavo. 13 pages. Matthew M Tang #693187. Published by Matthew M Tang (A0.1088976). This beautiful arrangement combines two of the most common and well known melodies of “In the Bleak Midwinter,’ a poem written by Christina Rossetti into the same song. The first by Gustav Holst and the second by Harold Darke. This arrangement will take the audience through a journey of key signatures beginning in F Major, continuing through Bb, G, E and finally ending in Ab Major. Each key signature helps to convey the meaning of that particular verse. This is geared more towards a smaller choir, preferably a choir of 16 singers and it is also meant for one on a part situations. The harmonies in this arrangement are simple, yet powerful and reverent. I hope this arrangement helps remind us of the real reason why we celebrate Christmas. Gifts and Santa Claus are fun traditions but the real reason why we celebrate Christmas is because it is the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ. I hope you guys enjoy it!!!

Composed by Public Domain, as performed and recorded by Isadar. Arranged by Isadar. Contemporary Classical, Neo- Classical, Christmas, Recital, New Age. Sheet Music Single. 8 pages. Published by Mainya Music Publishing
Contains:<br> "Greensleeves 2012"<br> - taken from the Isadar solo piano collection, "O Christmas" (also available on SMP)<br> <br> Sounds like: Vince Guaraldi's "A Charlie Brown Christmas," Liz Story's "The Gift," George Winston's "December," legacy Windham Hill solo piano artists, "A Winter's Solstice" compilations.<br> <br> Note: “Greensleeves 2012” is a revisited and evolved arrangement which like my earlier version, was inspired by – and also pays ‘homage’ to – Liz Story’s brilliant take on this timeless piece.<br> <br> Transcribed by: David Shenton ( https://www.shentonmusic.com/ ) verbatim to the sound recording<br> <br> Album review by: Michael Diamond (http://michaeldiamondmusic.com):<br> <br> Fresh on the heels of his highly acclaimed chart-topping CD, Reconstructed, Isadar gifts us with a sparkling new album of holiday-themed instrumental music for solo piano, entitled “O Christmas.” Given the proximity to his recent release, one might assume that this one was quickly produced, but in reality O Christmas has been 7 years in the making. Various circumstances including other recording projects, a segue into the field of video production, and a cross country move from NYC to the west coast and later back again, created delays with the completion of the album. But as they say, “good things come to those who wait.”<br> One of the most interesting things about this album is the fact that the selections are traditional Christmas songs, yet some were chosen because they are less well known, or “off the beaten path” as Isadar characterizes them. This follows the pattern set by his 1999 Christmas album “In Search For The Meaning Of Christmas,” yet this new CD mines even deeper in its quest for interesting and unusual choices.<br> <br> The album begins with a track called “Good Christian Men.” Steeped in history, the song dates back to 14th century Germany and its Latin title was originally “In Dulci Jubilo” before it was translated into English in the 1800’s. Isadar’s interpretation creates a lively and festive air that makes a perfect portal to the recording. The high-spirited mood continues on the next song, “Teddy Bears Picnic,” which although not technically a Christmas song, has been interwoven by Isadar with “March Of The Toys” to tie it in with the holidays – a clever arrangement of these intriguing melodies. One of the more well-known carols on the album is “O Christmas Tree” and is sure to have listeners humming along with it’s familiar refrain.<br> <br> A track entitled “Still” is an innovative rendition of the classic “Still, Still, Still” which Isadar has put his own spin on, or as he jokingly puts it “jazzed up shamelessly.” No such liberties were taken on the classic “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel,” however. This song provides a showcase for Isadar’s accomplished grand piano work, featuring lush left hand arpeggios creating a strong foundation for his more delicate right hand melodies to dance upon – a powerful and moving combination. Another of the less well known, yet equally inspiring tunes is a Puerto Rican carol entitled “Song Of The Wise Men.” It has been said that: “Christmas is, above all, a children’s holiday, and many hymns are addressed to children, reminding them that the real reason for the sugarplums and Christmas trees is the celebration of the birth of the Christ Child.” This theme is well reflected in Isadar’s choice of “O Come Little Children,” based on a carol from the 1800’s.<br> <br> Among my favorite tracks on the album are the wistful strains of “Greensleeves 2012,” which Isadar interprets with elegance and grandeur and also pays ‘homage’ to Liz Story’s brilliant take on this enduring composition. This is followed by a rendition of “Masters In This Hall,” which can best be described as, well… “masterful.” The song dates back to the sixteenth century, and is another of the less well-known tunes that Isadar has chosen to feature. The album draws to a close with Isadar invoking artistic license on what is perhaps one of the most unique and liberal versions of a classic carol heard here yet. Based on “We Wish You A Merry Christmas,” Isadar characterizes it as “an uninhibited melancholy arrangement.” While I don’t know if “melancholy” is the word I would use to describe it, it does have a pensive quality and is presented more as a nocturne than usual lively carol it is known as. I really liked the interpretation and respect Isadar’s creativity and distinctive rendering of the song.<br> <br> “O Christmas” is an exceptional holiday collection, not only for Isadar’s elegant grand piano artistry, but as well for the interesting and sometimes unexpected repertoire contained within. Like ornaments on a tree, the songs adorn the album, enhancing its beauty with their diversity, individuality, and timelessness. Given the well-deserved accolades and popularity of Isadar’s distinctive piano style, I’m sure that fans will want to include “O Christmas” in their collection and make it a part of their holiday tradition.

Published by Pauline Boston (A0.1023073). Part of the Christmas Story is the shepherds tending their flocks by night. This interesting composition creates the impression that the tenors and basses are the shepherds and the sopranos and altos are the angels as it describes the shepherds' journey to find the Christ Child. Full of meaning and beautiful chording, it can easily be performed as a tenor/bass duet using soloists, with other tenors and basses joining in on the tutti sections. The song has several key changes and is mostly in a minor key, except for one section when the angels sing. It can be a real show piece for your tenors and basses, and lends itself to the dramatic acting out of the scenarios. Performance time is @ 5-6 minutes.

Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.866214 Composed by Jeffrey Ouper. Christian,Christmas,Contemporary,Sacred. Octavo. 19 pages. Jeffrey Ouper #2894533. Published by Jeffrey Ouper (A0.866214). Winter's Breath is an original Christmas song for SATB Choir & Piano accompaniment. There is some divided parts in the soprano. The song's duration is about 6 minutes. Winter's Breath is perfect for holiday concerts and worship services. There is also a version for solo voice available.About the song:Winter’s Breath is an original Christmas song (original music and lyrics) composed in 2014. The lyrics embrace both a secular and religious message of peace, love, and hope inspired by the beauty of winter snow. I really wanted to write a more profound Christmas song with an important message embracing a modern view of Christmas since so many songs are commercialized or limited in meaning.Having lived in the Arizona desert since 2007, snow has become a novelty to me, and I was inspired by its beauty and the memories I had of winter growing up in northern Illinois. The chorus that repeats throughout the song presents an irony of winter warming the soul. I found this to be both interesting and also meaningful in that I was describing my new viewpoint of winter snow (seeing more beauty in it than before) and presenting a metaphor for life-one that encourages the listener to see the beauty in something that most northerners despise. The first verse begins with sensory perceptions including seeing, hearing, touching, and smelling various natural qualities of winter. The second verse describes the joy of children playing in the snow and their belief in winter stories. The third verse is directed at worrying adults with a message of hope for the future. The bridge encourages the listener to look past the negativity and differences in other people and look towards Christmas and the new year for a hope renewed. The final verse concludes with the traditional religious view of Christmas tradition.
