Each of the four pieces is available separately on SMP. (1) MARGARET DANCING. (SO. ) Like a Beethoven song and country dance, this piece offers pleasing melodies for the beginner who is well along, both to study and to perform in recital. (2) MUSICBOX. (SO. ) This short easy piece imitates the sound of a music box, including its running down at the end. For instruction it can serve to introduce the student to light staccato bowing or up and down slurred staccato bowing. For performance it can serve as an amusing interlude. (3) HYMNSONG. (SO. ) In the form of an etude, this piece consists of a simple theme with numerous variations, somewhat like Paganini’s famous Caprice 24. Of intermediate difficulty, it offers double stops, tremolo, and various bowings. For performance it can be played as is or it can easily be shortened by omission of one or more passages. (4) MOTHER’S STORIES. (SO. ) Varying from sweet to dramatic, this simple composition offers an opportunity for emotional interpretation. Intermediate from that standpoint, It is otherwise basically easy. A nice recital piece. Four Variations on a Theme by HandelHandel wrote the Suite in D minor, HWV 437. The Sarabande is the fourth movement in the suite and is written as a theme with two variations. Generations of keyboard players have studied this piece. It is still listed as a List A (Baroque) selection in the Royal Conservatory Celebration Series (2015). I learned it many years ago and it has always been one of my favourite pieces.

Sir Edward Elgar’s Variations on an Original Theme, commonly known as Enigma Variations, may be the most wonderful musical tribute to friendship ever composed. Each of the fourteen variations is headed with initials or a code name of a family member or friend, with the last one being Elgar himself. The best known variation is the ninth, entitled Nimrod. It represents Augustus Jaeger, Elgar’s close friend and editor at his publisher Novello & Company. In the Bible, Nimrod is referred to as “the mighty hunter”, thus identifying with Jaeger (Jäger), meaning “hunter” in German. The stately and serene variation expresses the depth of the composer’s feelings for his friend, and is often performed separately on solemn occasions. This arrangement is based on the original orchestral score, and Elgar’s own piano reduction, both published by Novello in 1899. Technically it is not too difficult, though with some double stopping to complete the harmonies and for fullness of sound.CYPRESS PUBLISHING is pleased to be the imprint for arrangements for string ensemble by Stephen Levintow. He is a free lance professional violist and violinist specializing in chamber music, who began making string quartet and trio arrangements for wedding, party and corporate events, to expand the repertory or to improve on existing versions. Selections include unusual pieces by both familiar and lesser-known composers, plus standard classical and popular favorites. The goal is to produce high-quality, musically satisfying arrangements faithful to the composer’s original material, yet sight-readable in most cases by working professionals or intermediate to advanced students. The full range of normal string technique is employed, while avoiding unnecessary technical complexity. Melodic material is distributed throughout the four voices where appropriate, to maintain listener and performer interest. All parts and scores are set in Sibelius© software format, with careful attention to legibility and page turns.

The President of the German Bundestag, Norbert Lammert, asked me to compose a piano work which should relate to the German anthem and was to be performed for the first time on the occasion of his retirement from political activities in autumn 2017. The title Variationen mit Haydn [Variations with Haydn] illustrates that Haydn's own variations on his hymn are part of the work, yet are modified immediately upon appearance. The piece consists of the theme as set by Haydn, four groups of four variations each, with the first of each variation being audibly close to Haydn, while the others gradually move farther away from him. The theme reappears in the coda very softly and pensively – damaged, yet not broken. Stefan Heucke.

Published by James Strauss (A0.1035224). Unless your name is Mozart, Mendelssohn or Korngold, the first compositional steps are always the hardest. Chopin was probably no older than 14 when he set to work on a set of variations for piano and flute. Already in love with opera, he decided on the happy- ending aria, Non più mesta (No longer sad) from Rossini’s opera Cinderella. As the curtain comes down, Cinderella gleefully warbles, No longer sad beside the fire shall I sit alone, singing; my long years of heartache were but a streak of lightning, a dream, a game. We are unsure what actually prompted Chopin to select this for his unique combination of flute and piano, but it was most likely written for the composer’s father who was a capable amateur flute player. In the end, the piece was probably dedicated to Józef Cichowski, a close friend of his fathers and an amateur flautist as well. We are indeed fortunate that this early piece of Chopin juvenilia has actually survived, as Jozef Nowakowski, one of the composer’s friends, kept the single manuscript copy as a memento. For one reason or another, the work did not appear in print until 1953. This charming and fluent set of variations presents the theme and four decorated versions of the original tune. Added triplet figuration enlivens the first variation, while the second relies on a florid bel canto style to embellish the theme. Rapid downward arpeggios propel variation three, and the concluding variant displays rapid staccato figuration. Stylistically, there is nothing in this composition to suggest Chopin’s hand. You certainly won’t hear Chopin’s fingerprint in the piano part, as all the interesting bits are given to the flute. In addition, it’s the only Chopin piano part that can comfortably be played by most amateurs. Clearly, the future poet of the piano had a long way to go! Here in a Flute and orchestra version.

Each variation is essentially tonal, with some chromaticism and modality, and preserves the original harmonic structure of the theme. The final variation ventures further. My Variations on the hymn tune St. Elizabeth (Fairest Lord Jesus) present the tune with an original harmonization followed by four variations. The first two settings (Theme and Variation I) give out the tune in unaltered form, undergirded by two different harmonizations. Variation II is a duo cast in baroque style with an ornamented melody accompanied by a rhythmically repetitive pattern in the manual bass. In Variation III, a continuously moving accompaniment played by the feet and the left hand provides a backdrop to another ornamented version of the hymn tune, again in a somewhat baroque style. The final variation is more challenging to play. After a brief introduction, the tune appears in the soprano voice, harmonically supported by the alto and pedal bass, while the left hand provides a continuous stream of eighth-note triplets. After a couple of modulations, the final section (marked grandioso) presents the tune with a 4-voice harmonization punctuated at the end of each phrase by a trumpet-like rhythmic pattern played on a state trumpet stop. I have provided a full-length recording to aid the prospective buyer in the decision-making process. I encourage you to search the Sheet Music Plus or the Sheet Music Direct website for other hymn arrangements of mine, some for organ and others for piano.
