Einar Englund’s (1916-1999) Flute Concerto (1985) is beyond dispute one of his greatest works. Its finest attributes are its rich melodic invention, colourful instrumentation and immediate message. Add to these its rewarding solo part, and the result is truly one of his best concertos – and works. He himself did not hesitate to regard it as such. It was premiered in Helsinki on September 16, 1985, having been completed at Ljugarn on the Swedish island of Gotland at the end of June. The Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra was conducted by Leif Segerstam, and the soloist was the concerto’s dedicatee, Mikael Helasvuo. The Flute Concerto opens with a Ritornello in which the flute's playful, dance-like passages make sharp contrast with the orchestra's heroic stance. In the mellow Canzona which follows, the flute plays rhapsodically over repetitive orchestral figures. The work's action-packed finale hints at parody in its military march-like opening, but also gives rein to the lyricism already familiar from the second movement. This version and the one for alto saxophone and piano are the ones the most commonly used. Its author, Jacques Ibert (1890-1962) is a neoclassical composer who won the Prix de Rome in 1919. He composed many symphonic suites, operas and seven orchestras, including Angelique (1926) and Entertainment (1930). He also was in charge of the Accadémie de France in the Villa Médicis (Roma) and was later administrator for the Paris Opera.

F.A. Rosler (Antonio Rosetti), a Bohemian by birth, worked as court music director in Ludwigslust/Mecklenburg. He wrote 14 flute concertos altogether the most important of which is the concerto G major, Op. 14. The expanded head movement combines the sonata form with the ritornello technique of the concerto grosso. Right at the beginning, the basses of the Mannheimer-Walzermotiv make it clear that Rosler knows how to use effectively the orchestral technique of his time. Despite all motivic and thematic as well as harmonic abundance, Rosler achieves in this concerto an almost natural musical unity.

The music of Finnish composer Kai Nieminen (b. 1953) does not conform to any isms. He remarks: I feel like I am a painter in music, who having seen or experienced something attempts to give that something a shape in music. The flute concerto Palomar was written for Patrick Gallois and premiered 2001 in Milan, Italy. The idea for his Flute Concerto came to Nieminen at the Villa Lante in Rome when he was kept awake by persistent birdsong in the heat of the night. The title alludes to the last novel, Palomar, by Italo Calvino. Though Nieminen finds inspiration in literature, the visual arts and nature, he has no desire to confine the listener to any programme. The aim of the extra-musical stimuli is at most to fire his listeners' imagination and to make them savour musical visions with a mind as open as that of Calvino's Mr Palomar examining the little wonders of the world around him.
