In honor of the 200th anniversary of St. Rose Philippine Duschene’s arrival in New Orleans, Michael Joncas was commissioned to write a new mass setting by the Religious of the Sacred Heart. This edition is scored for SATB voices and features instrumental parts for complete symphony orchestra. Parts may be used according to the players available in your circumstance. The mass includes optional phrases in French and Potawatomi honoring the American saint’s heritage and ministry. The mass may be sung in unison, reserving the choral and instrumental parts for holy days. While some contemporary musical settings of the “Glory to God†seem burdensome and even awkward, Joncas’s melody is absolutely delightful. The singable through-composed Gloria boasts a magnificent and manageable modulation that contributes to the triumphant nature of the piece. “Lord, Send Out Your Spirit†is based on Veni Creator Spiritus, one of the most familiar Gregorian chants. The chant is sung at Pentecost Vespers, the dedication of a church, and for the sacraments of Confirmation and Holy Orders. It is also heard at consistories when the cardinals gather in the Sistine Chapel to elect a new pope. The psalm verses in this setting are appointed for Pentecost Sunday Mass during the Day, as well as being an option for a common responsorial psalm for Pentecost.

Although a part for flute (or violin) is provided to emphasize the hymn tune, there are other creative instrumental opportunities to explore. Use a cello or bassoon for the bass accompaniment line. The organist is encouraged to experiment with different registrations and colors. The tenors will want to be well warmed-up, and the occasional tenuous bass section will appreciate the support from the keyboard. The Flute and Violin parts are optional. .

Normand Gouin has crafted a timeless setting of the Mass. He has set familiar Gregorian chant Ordinary parts—Kyrie XVI in Greek, Gloria VIII in Latin, Mode VI Alleluia, Sanctus XVIII in Latin, ICEL memorial acclamations in English, ICEL Amen (expanded), and Agnus Dei XVIII in Latin—for Assembly, SATB choir, and organ, with optional instrumentation for Flute, Brass Quintet, Percussion, and Strings. The choral parts sometimes support the assembly chant, and sometimes act as halos, deftly embellishing it. The score is in modern notation, and rhythmic values have been treated with great care to preserve the natural flow of chant. A highlight is the Gloria (Missa de Angelis), which alternates assembly chant with original, metered music for the choir based on the chant. Commissioned for the dedication of Christ Cathedral, Orange, CA, in 2019.

This anthem from the original service of Lessons and Carols, incorporates a fresh new approach. This piece works equally well with organ alone or with an instrumental ensemble for added strength.
