Writing these arrangements, Frank Reinshagen has created little masterpieces, which broaden the rhythmical and harmonic context of the original tunes in an interesting manner without detracting from their archaic and melancholic character. These original tunes have been borrowed from the Irish, Scottish, and Gaelic musical tradition. These through-composed arrangements are rather easy to perform from the rhythmical and technical point of view, yet they are quite demanding in respect of the key they are written in, their intonation and, especially, their interpretation. Their different instrumentations are fully compatible with each other and, due to their overall structure, they are also suitable to be played with multi-scored parts. The interpretation of 'S mo lamh air a stiuir---the song of a helmsman living on the Isle of Skye---should be interpreted with the musicians paying careful attention to its dynamics and phrasing, which reflect the up-and-down motion of the stormy Arctic Ocean. For this arrangement, the key D minor, which is one whole tone lower than the original, has been chosen to make sure that the piece is playable, especially for a clarinet quartet.

When Cuarteto Casals approached me with the idea of illuminating Beethovens quartets anew, you can imagine the many thoughts and feelings that where going through my mind: what a joy, what a great honor What an intriguing head-scratcher! How can you possibly shine a new light on something that is already perfect? Weeks, months went by in search of a common ground between the Master and myself until I finally found it in the realization that a word lays hidden in the St. Johns hymn that gave musical notes their original name: Re, Sol, Ut, Io (D, G, C, B in English music notation) Perfect! “Resolutio†in Latin means both the resolution of aproblem and the re-solution: a re-blend of many elements that will eventually coagulate to make something new. There was finally themelodic and a rhythmical canvas for my piece. On this canvas I wrote the story of a funny little contest, played on a sunny Mediterranean square, between street musicians and Cuarteto Casals just minutes before they are about to go on stage to perform Beethovens Harp Quartet. After all the characters, each in his own way, had the chance to tell their story, a gentle rain starts to fall, dissolving (Re-solving) again the music sheet to eventually leave us with just a white piece of paper for somebody else to continue the Work. This short, “cool†suite in three movements can be performed with a variety of instruments from a handful of players to a complete concert band. The first movement radiates joy with a powerful 3/4 beat. The second movement is in the style of a pavane, which gives a sense of nostalgia and the final movement forms a cheerful and high-spirited closing with a really funky beat. School’s Cool is gecomponeerd in opdracht van de Yamaha Bläserklasse van de Frauenwaldschule in Nieder-Mörlen (Duitsland), ter gelegenheidvan de verhuizing naar een ander gebouw. De leerlingen van het orkest vonden de voormalige school ‘cool’, omdat ze er fijn konden musiceren. Het eerste deel straalt deze vreugde uit met een krachtige beat in driekwartsmaat. Hettweede deel is een soort pavane, waarin even wat weemoed doorklinkt. Het derde deel vormt een levenslustig slot in een lekkere funkbeat. Der erste Satz strahlt Spielfreude in einem kraftvollen Rhythmus im 1/2-Takt aus. Der zweite Satz ist eine Art Pavane, in welcher einen Moment lang Nostalgie widerklingt. Der dritte Satz bildet ein fröhliches, in Hochstimmung endendes Finale in einem ansprechenden Funk-Beat. Kurz gesagt, ist School’s Cool eine wunderbare Suite, ganz besonders für junge Musiker.Cette petite suite fluide et détendue en trois mouvements est adaptée tous types de formations géométrie variable (partie de piano optionnelle). Le premier mouvement évoque la joie de vivre en musique. Le deuxième mouvement est une sorte de pavane empreinte de nostalgie. Enjoué et pétillant, le troisième mouvement conclut l’œuvre sur un rythme funk entraînant. Cette petite suite charmante est parfaite pour vos jeunes musiciens. School’s Cool è un brano commissionato a Jacob de Haan per la classe di musica Essential Elements della Scuola Frauenwald di Nieder-Mörlen in Germania. Il primo movimento evoca musicalmente la gioia di vivere. Il secondo movimento è una specie di pavane impregnata di nostalgia. Vivace e brillante, il terzo movimento chiude il brano su un trascinante ritmo funk. Questa piccola suite piena di charme è perfetta per giovani musicisti.
